WESTS Tigers have suffered a massive blow ahead of their preliminary final clash against St George Illawarra, with prop Todd Payten rolling his ankle at training this afternoon.

The mishap occurred while the Tigers were warming-up for a closed field session at Concord Oval, and has placed the veteran in enormous doubt for Saturday night’s ANZ Stadium blockbuster.

Payten was assisted from the field and rushed straight for scans, the results of which should be known tonight.

Rookie Andrew Fifita is in line to come into the starting pack with John Skandalis on standby for the bench.

One insider said Payten was completing a regulation drill when he trod on a tennis ball.

The Tigers have already been hit by injuries to Robert Lui (thigh), Robbie Farah (calf) and Gareth Ellis (back) who have been restricted to light duties this week.

This doesn't look good at all!!!!!

Massive loss he was so important to our game plan to stop the big dragons forwards.however one door closes another opens its time for fifita to show his true colours and show he belongs with the best.

yep rolled/strained ankle without any ligament damage is like 2-3weeks? so even with super rehab surely can't make it in 3 nights time.

I don't think it's a smokie , as I was passing Concord Oval around 3.40pm , saw the lads training , and decided to sit in the stands and watch , what could only be deceived as a very light training …I saw all on the field , except Gibbs , who was on the sidelines westing a boot , but no signs of Payten .

Lui was running , but very gingerly , and Ellis was running well, but taking it very easy after with the tackling bag work.
Brown looked great under the high bombs Benji was putting up , but Robbie was later icing his calf, and the end of the session.

Benji looked fantastic , and was practicing field goals from 45m out against the wind , and getting some, well from my angle in the stands anyway.

Overall , a light session with Sherns in control in the middle of the pitch....most looked very relaxed & happy. Both Ryan & Lawo kicked field goals from 35 out near the sideline , with Ryan yelling , that's $100 win...bet with someone.

But Payten will be a massive lost , if true , or maybe it's a smokescreen , and went early to be with his wife at the hospital to witness the birth of their child

when he hasnt played…...............0 wins, 6 losses.
