Penalty Try

There was a fair bit of conjecture from the fox commentators. Pretty much implying that If Luch didn't stay down it would have just been called a knock on.

Imo that was a dead set penalty try, even before the head high crackdown. Whacked him in the chops over the line. Yes he also knocked the ball out but clearly made forceful contact with the head.

Laurie on the other hand...☺️

The main argument seems to be 'he was going for the ball'.... that doesn't mean anything. Most head highs are accidents doesn't mean they're not penalties. Right decision

On Fox, it was a simple dropped ball, no try - until there was the last replay, and you can see clearly Jennings over the top in the last moment with his first contact on LL across the jaw.
And that's all folks.
Under the rules, attacking the head is a no no.
And if it happens in the action of a try being scored - Penalty Try it is.

All players know, you can't attack the head, there is no way to determine what was a hard whack or a soft whack, it happened to both sides?
We've coped our share of them.
Is it the way to go, I don't know, but it's the rules everyone is playing under atm.

Even before the crack down it would have been a penalty try.
No idea what ex players or neutrals in general are complaining about

High contact in the act of scoring a try .. pretty simple really

What did the channel 9 commentators have to say about it?

Freddy and Gus were half in, half out but apparently Billy Slater declared it a penalty try even before the replays.

Was Luchy taken off though? Surely if they hit you hard enough in the head that you drop the ball, you'd have to go off for HIA

I have no argument it was a penalty try.

My question is under the new interpretations it was a swinging arm with forceful high contact, doesn't that constitute a trip to the bin?

Is it a penalty yes.

The ref actually called it straight away, he started motioning for no try/video review rather than play on 20m tap.

I think it's more that a foul play prevented him from scoring. To me it was clear that the punch on the ball stopped him from scoring and the high shot was incidental. A penalty in my books not a penalty try. But at the end, it all evens out. We've had a lot of dud calls our way too.

Yep, my thoughts too.

The on field ref seemed very hesitant and unsure of himself.

I've only seen the replay on the small screen at the game, was contact made with the ball before the head?

No, head before ball.

Head before ball, but the ball was lost in the direction of the punch, not a cold drop.

It depends on 1st contact for me, if first contact is the head Penalty Try, if first contact is the ball then just a penalty.

I don’t know what all the fuss is about our penalty try. Same thing happened a long time ago when Jamie Ainscough connected with Mark Geyer’s head and Geyer dropped the ball as he tried to score - cost St George a Grand Final.

It’s nothing new and this time it certainly didn’t make any difference to the result, we were already in front. Press just have to make a big deal about it because God forbid the Wests Tigers be allowed to enjoy a fair victory!

If Jennings punched the ball out while playing at the ball then (ignoring the head contact) it's not a knock on from Luc and Garner grounds the ball for a try.
So it's a try either way - just would have made the kick slightly more difficult.

Yeah I see where you’re coming from. But the foul play came in the act of scoring a try, and the first initial contact hit him across the chops. The responsibility is completely on the defender there
