Penrith Bleating about Losing Juniors

In essence, Penrith are bleating about losing the juniors they developed and not being rewarded/ compensated for their developing them.

I can understand not wanting to lose the players but this happens at every club in the NRL - we know that all to well. Wests supporters from pre-merger days would well and truly know what being plundered means all too well - they were never able to get anything done about what happened to them, nor has any other club. Penrith didn't give a second thought to what would happen to us when they head-hunted Cleary and really ruined our next few years.

Surely, Penrith have been rewarded by the success of their club this year and will be in future years to come? That's what putting a good roster means in the salary cap world (Roosters, Souths, Broncos and the Storm excepted) - you go up and you go down in strength (unless you are us 🙂 ).

If the NRL did change the rules re junior development I woudn't have a problem but until that day suck it up Panthers.

No one gave a crap when we lost Tedesco, Moses, Woods, JAC and Papenhuysen, the media just blamed the club for poor management, now it is another team they listen, give me a break.
As an old Wests fan this has happened for well over 40 years, and we never got a break from the NRL or NSWRL at the time

I agree the system needs a overhaul. A few clubs put a lot of money and resources into developing juniors only to see the walk out the door to the parasites. Although all successful clubs get punished by the salary cap for being successful. Still would love a transfer fee implemented or even a cap benefit...but will never happen while a few teams control how the game is run

Accusing a player of not honouring a handshake agreement will not create a good impression. Shame really. I mean, the game is all about momentum off the field as well. Barrett knows all about momentum, he saw an opportunity. Ivan will now see the GF as a missed opportunity.

way I see it is that Penrith were meant to win the grand final this year. we see it so often with the great teams that they have the eyes picked out of them almost instantly after they go home with the trophy. you're able to keep some, but the youngsters who played well above their pay grade are offered massive sums of money and will make their way out of the club. that's life unfortunately. if Penrith win the grand final they probably aren't as vocal as they are about it currently.

but ultimately, as much as I hate them, I agree with them. there should be concessions in place for clubs that develop local juniors. 10% of their salary as a 'development fee' isn't enough. after the big 4 debacle we should've been compensated after Woods and Tedesco walked out the door. Papenhuyzen too. the rich get richer and the weak get weaker.

As a Penrith junior many years ago and as someone who fell at the final hurdle of making it to the top grade, I have ZERO sympathy for this club in that regard.

In the mid 80's when I was graded, the place was seriously overflowing with exceptional junior talent. Often, and I saw it first hand, there was a preference for some outsiders to come in at the exception of local lads. It wasn't until it smacked them in the face and you got Brandy, MG, Tony Butterfield, Brad Izzard, Ben Gonzales, Doug Delaney that they realised their local talent and that helped them understand their potential in 90 and 91. I know the dramas after that smashed the club, but they also went away from the locals badly in the late 90s and early 00's. It hasn't been until the last 5 years they tapped into it again.

And now they whinge! Cant have your cake and eat it too. For every good player at Penrith, there have been 10 thrown on the scrapheap in favour of imported junk. They have had the best junior base for 40 years+.
