As a Penrith junior many years ago and as someone who fell at the final hurdle of making it to the top grade, I have ZERO sympathy for this club in that regard.
In the mid 80's when I was graded, the place was seriously overflowing with exceptional junior talent. Often, and I saw it first hand, there was a preference for some outsiders to come in at the exception of local lads. It wasn't until it smacked them in the face and you got Brandy, MG, Tony Butterfield, Brad Izzard, Ben Gonzales, Doug Delaney that they realised their local talent and that helped them understand their potential in 90 and 91. I know the dramas after that smashed the club, but they also went away from the locals badly in the late 90s and early 00's. It hasn't been until the last 5 years they tapped into it again.
And now they whinge! Cant have your cake and eat it too. For every good player at Penrith, there have been 10 thrown on the scrapheap in favour of imported junk. They have had the best junior base for 40 years+.
I'm not here to stick up for Penrith, but they did develop a lot of players in the late 90s and early 2000s (one of my best mates played first grade for them). The 2004 squad alone had 19/30 locals. And that was after John Lang brought in many outside signings.
Speaking of juniors, what happened with Henry Lealuga-Puhotau? Is he still with us?
There doesn't seem to be much news about our junior players for next year - other clubs seem to have at least announced their JF squads. I'm hearing bits and pieces but I have to admit I am not aware of any new exciting new signings or players to keep an eye on apart from Kei, Smith and the big unit Mavoni!
