Penrith Panthers dropping Penrith Tag

Panthers boss Phil Gould has told Penrith members tonight that a new club logo will be revealed for next season, the club will be known as the PANTHERS, the wording Penrith will be dropped!

Interesting move considering Canterbury & Cronulla did a similar thing 10 years ago and have since reverted..

Why do clubs alter their brand in this way? I remember David Tapp losing his job at Souths when he suggested they drop the Souths name and be known as Rabbitohs..

In my opinion, as a JV Wests Tigers need to retain consistent naming and branding including Logo.

The uproar would be huge if either name in our JV was dropped

Won't happen unless we have to be relocated in the future

Not expecting WT to change.. Just wonder the motive behind it..

Why do clubs break away from tradition for further brand confusion..

I.e people will always call them Penrith/Penriff

Wests did the same thing

Went from Western Suburbs magpies to Wests Magpies.

Western suburbs is apparently seen as a negative, I guess the same with Penrith…that and it pigeon holes the club

It was one thing back in the day when I started following footy, the tribalism was a major factor, it was like a local comp, south to Cronulla, west to Penrith, north to Manly & Norths Sydney Bears and the rest in the miiddle....nowadays you want to be seen as a national or even international brand

The relevance is simple. Nationally, let alone internationally, Penrith (or Balmain, Canterbury, Cronulla) means nothing. To someone in Perth, Redcliffe, Collingwood, these suburbs mean nothing, let alone someone overseas….whereas Wests as in Western Sydney, makes sense. It is the same reason we had Sydney Tigers, Sydney City Roosters & Sydney Bulldogs.

Its marketing

I agree.. But i do ask why did bulldogs & sharks revert back?

Nostalgia.

Have a tough few year, make some changes and declare you are going back, get the old fans rejuvenated and interested etc.

When Gus eventually moves on I won't be surprised to see some new CEO change it back with fanfare.

Because at some stage it is more effective to contract your marketing back to local tribalism rather than expand it nationally. Same as Balmain changed back prior to WT and panfas will in about 2016

Seems a bit odd but I get it. By removing the Penrith name and untying themselves to a single suburb they theoretically represent a larger region (they already did but the concept will feel stronger now) which prevents them from being a target for relocation. I imagine Gould has got the tip that at the end of 2015 relocation is on the agenda.

I hate when they remove the location from the name. It's where you are from, how can you discard it!?

I know someone in the panthers organisation that has been telling me a story for the last few years that i have never taken seriously till now.

Essentially the demise of the Wests tigers (due to financial problems) is a constant source of discussion at board level in Penrith and taking over The western suburbs area after Wests Tigers demise as Wests panthers or something similar is talked about as a goal.

It has gone as far as Gould getting the names Wests panthers and several variants registered and copyrighted.

Obviously a lot more would need to go wrong for this to ever seriously happen but dropping the Penrith would be an interesting start.

I remember we were once the Sydney Tigers….worst decision ever lasted 1 year!

I think it was 2 seasons, name wasn't too bad but playing out of Parramatta Stadium was the double whammy. I remember one vocal member wanting us to be called the "headless chooks'" instead of the Tigers as there was no one to take charge and set a direction for the Club, just FUD as we meandered along,Most of our(Balmain) problems at the time are still with us,just bubbling along in the background..

Playing devils advocate here… De-merging and re-merging could see Wests Panthers and North Tigers that could cover the outer west and the northern harbour+inner west (north shore, ryde, balmain, hornsby). Then Manly move to the coast or 6/6 or something. Would've provided better coverage. North Tigers would need NRL admin.

Too late now.

Would rather we stay Wests Tigers.

It's probably a good move for the fans so they don't sound so uneducated when chanting 'Penrith' OR someone needs to teach them that Penrith isn't a 3 syllable word!
It's Pen-rith ya muppets NOT Pen-er-ith!!!

lot of the locals are furious. Penrith people are in general are fairly parochial about our home town.
lot of sponsors already talking about withdrawing support.

Penrith is like s country town in a lot of ways, this will certainly backfire in the local business community which I'm part of, and that is where Penrith gets most of it s sponsorship

Obviously being a local I have a soft spot for the Pamfers, I can't believe they're dropping the name. When you ask most fans that way who they follow, they'll generally say they follow Penrith, not the Panthers.

Well they failed to register the trademark Western Panthers this year so it is the next step in re-branding

A couple local big wigs have (who throw in cash) have told them to reconsider or they will lead a mass boycott. A couple pollies have joined the fight,
Im a regular at their corporate gigs and am friendly with a lot of their bigger sponsors and cant believe how angry they are.
Classic examle of do your home work….

Places like Collingwood, Carlton and Hawthorne have no problem with their suburbs as branding.
