Penrith Panthers dropping Penrith Tag

I think Penrith Panthers is one of the better brands in the league… The whole P alliteration , the fact that the 'panther' myth is a bit of local history

Sure Penrith isn't the most glamourous suburb, but neither is parra

I wouldn't call Penrith a suburb, more like a small city

A couple local big wigs have (who throw in cash) have told them to reconsider or they will lead a mass boycott. A couple pollies have joined the fight,
Im a regular at their corporate gigs and am friendly with a lot of their bigger sponsors and cant believe how angry they are.
Classic examle of do your home work….

Places like Collingwood, Carlton and Hawthorne have no problem with their suburbs as branding.

Goose, you obviously are a lot closer to this than I and seem to have some preferred knowledge but I think that this is linked to brand.

Last time I looked the Panthers group had about 9 or 10 clubs spread throughout NSW. I think that they are trying to profit from this brand - be a Panther member and all that it brings, statewide, hence the dropping of the word Penrith.

I'm not close to any one at the club that makes the decision and reasons behind, but links to the club sites around the state may be the reason, you could be on to something, but there is definitely a backlash

Suburb, municipality, locale, whatever you wish to call it

The uproar would be huge if either name in our JV was dropped

Won't happen unless we have to be relocated in the future

Sadly, that has become a remote possibility when it should have been non existing.

Interesting move by Penrith.

I personally dont like this shit. Following the magpies I used to get very sad continually been under threat of extinction or relocation and once we merged even though disappointed about other things I thought we were safe from that stuff at least.
But looks like its back on the agenda….what a time to be weak financially.

Anyway, when I started following footy 75 I rarely called them magpies nearly always Wests and same with others and all clubs. This American marketing crap just calling teams by their logo has no place here. Why follow them anyway they are a fading power and as others have said AFL has no problem with suburban clubs I hear Essendon called that ad much as bombers and it is the same in most places around the world. What about English soccer and Man u......supported worldwide.

If our crappy media followed the Melbourne model of calling clubs both by their logo as well as by name all of our infighting and other issues would dissapear overnight.

Maybe they would want the name western sydney panthers like western sydney giants. Blacktown is emerging

Maybe off-topic, but wasn't the whole idea for GWS to base themselves and play out of Blacktown? they've played about 3 games there in 2 yrs

The stadium only holds about 10K doesn't it? Would probably be more than enough at this point in time with their efforts in the last couple of years.
