Beattie is one of league's punching bags. Obviously he hasn't sat on the hill with a pie and beer or laced up a boot.

But is that really important?

In defense of him, he's heading up a real political beast of a sport. And that's something he knows inside out.

Yep exactly. His role isn't to know who Ron Gibbs is it's to run the political and organisational side of things. Whether he's doing that well is a personal judgement I guess.

My best memory of Laurie Nichols was at the SCG against South Sydney in 1970\. It may have been the day the Queen was introduced to all the players. I was 14 at the time.

Laurie was on the concourse when the Tigers scored I think and did his shadow boxing routine and a number of Souths fans surrounded him and was giving it to him.

Out of nowhere hundreds of Balmain supporters surrounded the Souths guys. I’ve never seen anything like it before or since. Laurie just kept walking around shadow boxing as if nothing happened.

Anyone on here remember being there that day and seeing it?
