PETER PROVAN, Balmain's captain in the 1969 grand final win against South Sydney, died yesterday - just three days before the Heritage round clash that celebrates that very match. Provan, the brother of St George great Norm, had fought a long battle with Parkinson's Disease and was not due to attend Sunday's SCG clash between Wests Tigers and the Rabbitohs. The annual clash at the SCG celebrates the 1969 decider, one of the most famous grand finals. Wests Tigers players will wear black armbands, and the crowd observe a minute's silence.

RIP

TIGERS SAD TO HEAR OF PASSING OF PETER PROVAN

Wests Tigers players will wear black armbands against South Sydney at the SCG on Sunday, May 16, as a mark of respect for Peter Provan.

A minute’s silence will also be observed prior to the round 10 NRL kick-off at 2pm.

Peter Proven was one of the greats of the Balmain Tigers. He passed on Thursday, May 13, after a long illness. He was 73.

Peter played 14 games for St George between 1958 and 1960 (including the 1958 and 1959 Grand Final wins). However, he played his best football for the Balmain Tigers between 1961 and 1969 where he played 162 games. In 1963, he played a Test match for Australia.

Peter played for the Tigers in two losing Grand Finals against St George Dragons in 1964 and 1966\. His finest hour was in 1969 when he defied injury to lead Balmain to their courageous win over South Sydney in the Grand Final. It was arguably the most famous Tigers victory of all time. Peter retired immediately after the match.

Together with his brother Norm Provan, Peter is one of the only set of brothers to lead teams to Grand Final victories.

Peter was a member of the Balmain Tigers Hall of Fame.

“The Tigers have lost one of the most famous and most respected figures in the history of our club,’’ said Balmain Tigers Chairman David Trodden.

“He led us to perhaps our greatest Grand Final win ever. For that reason alone, he will always have a very special place in our memory.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Carol and his children.”

Funeral details will be advised once finalised.

Farewell and RIP Peter Provan

He was a great leader and a very underestimated lock, with an outstanding work rate. He was a quiet guy that just went about his business without fuss or fanfare. The 69' GF was a just reward for his years of service to Balmain. Well done big fella.

He was a most underestimated lock allright and would have been in more Australian teams except for John Raper the great Saint George Lock.I can still remember Peter Provans great displays for Balmain.Sad to hear of his passing.

He was a great player allright. I remember the 69 GF very well ! Tiger Spirit won that game!

Although a Wests Magpies supporter at the time, I was at the 1969 GF cheering for the Tigers.

Peter Provan was one of those players who was held in high regard by supporters of other teams as well as Tigers supporters. A Tiger legend who will always be remembered.

I think that's a myth driven mainly by the media. Facts are that Balmain and Souths played twice during the 69' season, for one win each. Souths won the Minor Premiership, with Balmain finishing just one win or 2 points behind. Balmain lost the major semi final against Souths 15-14, having played most of the match with 12 men after Beetson was sent for clocking McCarthy. Balmain players went down injured 3 times in key field positions during the GF, that's all, no more, no less

Souths may have been favourites in the GF, but not red hot favourites. It came as no surprise to those who were familiar with those two teams that the odds, in today's betspeak, would have been Balmain 1.80, Souths 1.40 or so. Much greater upsets would have been Penrith in 2003, or Newcastle in 2001, or Melbourne in 99', or indeed Brisbane in 2006.

Yeh, only going on what Ive read, never have seen this game, only highlites….I do remember a bit of the hype at the time about it, probably the first GF I'd ever noticed, was 5 at the time...I remember the Tigers logo & colours catching my attention.

Just on a side track...while GFs nowadays are night and at ANZ....it works and works well....but they'll never recreate the amazing scene that was the lap of honour around the SCG with the JJ Giltinan shield...awesome pictures always

Had the pleasure in meeting Peter on several occasions. A thorough gentleman and deserves all the accolades that comes his way.

RIP
