Tunks played for souths and the dogs, was a handy front rower…king of dad jokes now

You forgot the Panthers plus his time spent in the UK, He was only a mercenary , hardly club loyal.

Ha,ha,ha. It's even then it was a semi professional sport , they were all mercenaries.
Just as now , only lower money.

Tunks' finest moment was in a reserve grade match at Leichhardt Oval when he tried to punch a young Steve Roach (who must have been in his teens) when a scrum when down. Roach did not back down and landed heavy blows on Tunks. Both were sent off but Roach was still hitting Tunks on the way up the tunnel. I recall the ground announcer asking for Blocker's father to come to the dressing room.

Haha. My mum grew up in Campsie and as such was a Canterbury fan, she hated Tunks as she reckons that he was a dead cert to give away a stupid penalty when the game was on the line for them.

I remember that well.I was sitting directly opposite the grandstand and watched them punch on all the way up to the dressing room.Blocker made a lot of new admirers that day for standing up to Tunks when he was a kid standing up to a fully grown man.Tunks never tried it on him a 2nd time

That would of been great to watch. Block was scared of no-one, went toe to toe with Kevin Tamati in that infamous Oz v NZ Test when he was only 20 or so years old. A genuine madman, was a pleasure to watch was Block. Shame those days are gone, would love to see a highlights package of his career and punch-ons.

Greg Dowling wasn't it?

Roach knocked Dowling out in a scrum at Leichhardt Oval in the South Eastern corner right near the try line. The scrum went down and then Dowling was on the ground. Balmain got the penalty because the ref had warned Dowling against trying to take the loose off Roach!

I have to say though the toughest forward was ex Nowra Warriors Bruce McGuire. He was an outstanding running second row forward but tough as. Steve Edmed had his jaw broken in a game against Newcastle at Leichhardt by Butterfield. MaGuire evened the score when he broke Butterfield's ribs in a tackle which I'm sure everyone at the ground felt. Imagine from Nowra Warriors to the Kangaroos. Simply an outstanding forward.

The Roach incident brings back back memories. Don't remember the McGuire incident but yeah he was as tough as they come. Pity they didn't win a grand final. I was at both and walked away disappointed

How about Bob Cooper vs the Steelers in the 80's. Only threw 2 punches and broke 2 jaws.

Non league related, but i was just reading a few stories about professional wrestlers. Look up Haku and read some of the stories about him. Would make all these so called tough footy players look like school girls.

Pretty sure you are right

No. Different incident. Pretty sure it was the same game, if not, same Test series. Blocker has spoken about it a few times, Tamati broke his nose but Block was still there on his feet swinging. No mean feat for a youngster.

Blocker knocked Dowling out because Dowling cowardly dropped his knees onto Gary Freeman's face while he was lying on the ground, Freeman's teeth were busted up pretty bad.
Bruce McGuire was a tough nut, remember the final game of the '89 season at a ground-record Leichhardt Oval when John Cartwright shaped up to McGuire and swung one, Rex Mossop said "Johnny Cartwright…..the last of the straight-backs" and Bruce belted him once and Carty dropped like a hooker's knickers. That game would rank among my favourites, plenty of blues and Balmain wiped the floor with them 36-6 or something like that.
Real shame that '89 side never won on GF day, that forward pack was phenomenal.

Wasn't that when Freeman dove on a ball when we won the scrum and the scrum screwed around and Dowling ended up standing over Freeman b4 dropping his knees straight on Freemans face

Yep that would of been it. It was a low act by Dowling for sure, pretty sure he got a decent suspension from it. Block just pasted his munted head for it though, that was back in the days when the Broncos could never beat Balmain. Before salary-cap rorting became their specialty.

Yes it was a deliberate act

Yeah Balmain always beat them. I'm pretty sure in 1988, the broncos debut year, that Balmain was the 1st team to beat them in about round 7 than in the final round at Leichhardt Oval they played again with the prize a spot in the semis and the tiger's won again.

He sure knew how to give away stupid penalties though. Used to drive me nuts!

I was only a young fella at that time, year 8 or something, but that's scrum packed down in front of me. I still remember the crack noise and seeing Dowlings head reel back. It was a great game. Laurie Nicholls walking around the path on the hill with his chants, Andy Courier bolting down the sideline, then I couldn't see him because of the crowd, then I saw him again, bringing the ball around near the sticks to make it easier for himself to convert. Great memories
