Super League club Wigan have released former NRL forward Eddy Pettybourne for personal reasons.

The Warriors have announced the 26-year-old will leave the club with immediate effect, halfway through a two-year contract.

Pettybourne, a New Zealand-born United States international, made 18 appearances in an injury-hit 2014 season after arriving from the Wests Tigers.

"I have enjoyed my time here but sometimes things happen outside your control and this means I have to head back home."

Pettybourne's Wigan career started ingloriously as he incurred a one-match ban for a high tackle in February's World Club Challenge and suffered various injuries.

But, a week ago, he gave an interview in which he spoke of his determination to "step up and play good footy" for Wigan.

He has also been with the Warriors squad at a winter training camp in the US but the club have agreed to his release.

General manager Kris Radlinski said: "Things have happened pretty quickly and escalated since we flew to Florida for our training camp.

"Being away allowed us to have some deep conversations and, in the circumstances, it is clearly best for Eddy to cut short his stay and return home to Australia."

Coach Shaun Wane said: "He has fitted really well into the Wigan way and I personally am very sorry to see him leave but totally understand his reasons for doing so.

"We are a strong family-orientated club and will support Eddy in the future. I wish him the best of luck."

He must have an NRL club lined up… Could be a cheap pickup .... Maybe he has matured as a person...?

He bagged our mob on the way out, and acted like a complete ass-hat when he was here.

I'd have Robert Lui back in our team before him.

Look good behind a good Souffs pack , but did nothing for us when he was with us , he lacked motivation and i found him being lazy.
No thanks save the Money for Merrin lol.

I'd have to say he is one of our most disappointing signings for mine. Came with a great presence but left as a shadow of what he could have been. Would not have him back if the choice was mine.

He joined at a bad time. Probably worst team we had in a while.

So if he was any good you'd think he'd stand out like a sore thumb

He did once against Penrith with a massive kick return from a drop-out and later 4 tackles in a row….that's Dally M stuff right there....

Maybe if youre a spine player, you know its easier to look better in a good team
Attitude, culture and defense problems can be quite contagious
