Player Sponsorship by Forum Members

Pie in the Sky perhaps - But please read on.

Having been a member of both this forum and the previous forum since inception, I have had an idea that has been lingering in my mind for many year (Apologies if it has already been mentioned) - but perhaps unsure whether I should say anything. We all hear that Rugby League needs its fans to survive and needs to increase its revenue base - etc etc, so the following is an inovative way of doing this (Plus think of the publicity it would generate).

As you know, during all home games, when players run out onto the field, we are made aware of who is being sponsored by whom. Back in 2004, I inquired about the cost of sponsoring a player as a method of advertising for my then business. I recall figures starting at $8,000 to do such a thing.

The recent Forum Supporter program (Which I only came across last night and have made contributions towards) prompted me to start this thread.

My proposal is that as a forum community, we gather together and pay a contribution towards sponsoring a player. Again as all this is new and I wanted to gauge everyones response first, I am yet to contact the Tigers to see if such opportunities exist nor have I prepared a formal proposal to show here. However, if we could get as little as 10% of this forums (76 odd people on the current no.s) to pledge $100 each - we would then have $7,600 to go to the club with the idea of sponsoring a player (It could be we have tiered supporters Gold, Silver & Bronze - $100, $50, $20 for example).

To my knowledge, I don't know of any other supports forum group in the NRL to have such a thing and I think it would highlight the uniqueness of our club and supporters. As sponsorships usually provide for some seating arrangements to games, we could then look at doing a number of things with these available seats.

1) Auction them off - with the proceedes helping a Junior Team
2) Auction them off - with the proceedes helping various charaties (This would be one of my preferences because I have a cause very close to my heart)
3) Have a lottery system whereby contributors to the sponsorship can win tickets to a rounds game

For personal reasons which I won't disclose, I can't attend games at the moment and therefore haven't held a season ticket since 2007\. To me this is an opportunity for us as a group from far and wide to feel a little more involved in the team we are all so pasionate about.

Again, Pie in the sky stuff perhaps, but if enough interest is shown, then I will move forward in preparing a case for this.

It's been mentioned before, but that shouldn't discount the fact that it's a great idea!
I think raising that kind of cash might be a little hard though, plus there are elements within the club that aren't a fan of this place and they may block it.
That being said, some players in the Super League have short/shoulder/etc sponsorship from fan groups.

if it's feasible and enough people jump on board, i'll definitely chip in!

You Know what Ken my man? I like this idea….

For people who live rural or interstate this would feel like a more worthwhile type of "membership".

Good stuff, count me in.

Would you get the money back when you do your tax?

All of those questions would need to be answered - but for now it's really about finding out whether there is merit in the idea proceeding. Considering the season starts shortly, its something that would need to gain momentum quickly.

Great Idea Ken. Would be good to raise some money for the juniors or a charity.

Imagine the ground announcer announcing "Number 6, Daniel Fitzhenry sponsored by the Unofficial Wests Tigers forum" :stuck_out_tongue:

I like the idea, but maybe it should be considered carfully & planned well for maybe next year… but as I said I like the idea & would support it.

i think its the most bizare idea i have ever heard.

Expecting people to fork out $100 to somebody they dont know to contribute to a fund which will hopefully get to a minimum of $8000 is bloody ridiculous.

Stop dreaming leave it up to the corporates and if your feeling that generous donate cash to your local junior rugby league club

Thanks for the feedback tigertime - but I think your feedback is bizare.

For the record, the idea of my post was to canvass the idea only, at no time did I suggest people give me a cent - as I said 'Pie in the Ski' stuff. The only way the idea would progress pass this point to a conceptual stage is if the numbers looked like stacking up (meaning atleast 70 posters support the idea).

It would require a committee to be established, where positions would be nominated and voted for (P&C like) and would be structure in a completly transparent way, books audited, multiple signaturies etc etc (To ensure no one can be accused of anything underhanded). We would also ask people to pledge the amount they wish to contribute. At the end of the day, if the money doesn't come through, the funds would be returned to all parties who have contributed and I would pay for any costs associated with setting up the bank accounts etc, so that no one is out by a single cent.

Tiger_Al is probably correct in suggesting that a slow a steady approach is best, that is if this is to progress past this point. And if it doesn't happen - then so be it.

Perhaps the idea should have just stayed in my head.

Thats sounds like a great idea, and a positive thought would be we would only have to pay half the cost for Fitzhenry ala bargain bin stuff.

I like the idea. Especially if it is sponsoring a fringe player, a up and comer, as I know personal sponsorships are not easy for them to come by

Do you show up the kid's birthday parties and kick over the cake? Geez stop being so anti! Okay maybe it's not doable but top marks for Ken for raising the possibility and thinking outside the square.

How funny is that!

And by the way, I think this is a great idea Ken.

Could we sponsor Mighty Mouse? Brilliant to see the WestsTigersForum logo plastered at each Nth Qld Game.

I like the idea Ken Y! Would be interested to see how many positive responses you get. Maybe we can throw a poll up to get a count on people who would be interested?

I'm not opposed to it. Of course I would want to know a lot more details on how it will work before handing over any cash.

But I think it is a great idea, good advertising for the forum (although not sure the club would like that), and good to put some money towards the boys.

On the other hand if I had the money I would sponsor someone myself, what a sight tho - a meathead player running around with a girls name on his jersey ahaha
