MEMBERS EXCITED TO ROW IN DRAGON BOAT TEAM
Thursday, 11 February 2010
Two Wests Tigers Members will make a long trip to Sydney to go racing in the Wests Tigers Dragon Boat team on Sunday, February 14.

For the past three days, Wests Tigers Members had the opportunity to enter a Members Only competition for the chance to join Jason Cayless, Gareth Ellis, Tame Tupou, Robert Lui, Junior Roqica and Aaron Woods in the Wests Tigers Dragon Boat.

The Wests Tigers Dragon Boat Team will go head to head with the Sydney Fish Market Dragon Boat team as part of the Year of the Tiger festivities at the Sydney Fish Market at Prymont. Three races over 200 metres will be held from 11.30am.

The lucky Members who will be joining the players are Robbie Harrison, 33, from Evatt in the ACT, and Julie Davies, 48, from Tarro, in Newcastle.

Robbie’s winning entry read: “I know what it takes to Step Up, I know what it's like to be the underdog. My Name is Robbie, Just like our leader.”

Julie’s winning entry read: “My family and I continually show our commitment to the team by travelling to watch them play each week. Our dedication would be an asset.”

Their prize also includes a Wests Tigers 2010 training shirt each to wear in the races and a barbecue seafood lunch with the players afterwards.

Supporters are encouraged to attend and help cheer on the Wests Tigers players in what will be a fun afternoon of activities.

Visitors can also admire the colour and movement of the Lion dancers in a traditional performance, said to bring good luck, happiness and prosperity in the New Year.

Red and Gold Chinese lanterns will line the market, with the colour red also a reminder of romance for Valentine’s Day.

MEMBERS HAVE GREAT TIME ROWING WITH PLAYERS
By Wayne Cousins

Wests Tigers Members Julie Davies and Robbie Harrison will always remember the time they went rowing with several players from their favourite team.

Julie, from Torro in Newcastle, and Robbie, from Evatt in the ACT, drove to Sydney to join Gareth Ellis, Jason Cayless, Tame Tupou, Robert Lui, Junior Roqica and Aaron Woods in the Wests Tigers Dragon Boat as they competed in three races over 200 metres against the ACCA Sydney Fish Market team.

The competition was open only to Wests Tigers Members.

The Dragon Boat races were held as part of the Sydney Fish Market’s Year of the Tiger celebrations.

The ACCA team, made up of state, national and international rowing representatives, won the opening race by about a half a length before Wests Tigers re-grouped to win the second race by around the same margin.

It was a different story in the third race with the ACCA team pulling away to victory. Knowing they were beaten, Woods and Roqica decided it was time for a water fight with all competitors getting out of the boat very wet, including this author and Fox Sports News presenter Christian Jantzen.

Following the races, the players and members joined the ACCA team for a lovely barbecue seafood lunch in between signing autographs and posing for photos.

Here is a letter of appreciation from Wests Tigers Member Julie Davies.

“Just a short note to thank the Wests Tigers, the players and the Fish Markets for a wonderful day at the Dragon Boat races.

The Dragon Boat races were great fun, although I think I used muscles I didn't know I had.

Ewan, Georgia and I had a terrific day and were overwhelmed by the way we were embraced by the players and Wayne Cousins.

The players who attended need to be praised for they not only represented the Wests Tigers in a positive light but were great ambassadors for the game of rugby league.

Their interaction with the general public also needs to be commended as they all took time out to have pictures taken and to give autographs when asked. WELL DONE !

Again thank you for organising the day, we had a brilliant time. GO THE MIGHTY TIGERS …..........here’s hoping 2010 is the ‘Year of the Tiger’.”

Footnote: Wests Tigers wishes to thank the Sydney Fish Market ACCA Dragon Boat Racing team for their friendliness and assistance; and Sydney Fish Market’s David Sandrussi, Louisa Goodall, and Gus Dannoun for their hard work in making the day a wonderful success. We enjoyed it very much.
