The National Broadband network is a massive job and MUST have… Howard sat on his hands and did NOTHING to improve the telecommunications network in Australia and this is why we find outselves in this situation... instead of investing in such things like this Howard dished out tax breaks to the mindless Australian to win votes...
Would you be surprised to find out that Wollongong cannot supply everyone with ADSL2+... IN FACT count yourself lucky if you manage to get it. Wollongong is one of the largest cities in Australia...
Our Internet speeds and network is terrible compared with the rest of the world...
An improved telecommunications network is a lot more than faster Internet speeds too, i wouldn't be so naive and perhaps do a little research instead of listening to the old hacks on am radio.
 Spoken like a true Labor staffer…..
You need to take some of your own advice and do some research Kaiser and co. A good starting point would be the 4th interim report released by the Select Commitee on the National Broadband Network - a senate inquiry of 2 years that was released in May of this year.
Although the report is 188 pages long and quite a boring read there is one glaring recomendation that just jumps off the page at you - in fact it is recommendation No.1
THAT THE GOVERNMENT ABANDON THE NATIONAL BROADBAND NETWORK PROJECT. Couldnt be any clearer even if you are a Labor man!!
You see, when Rudd came to office he promised to build a fibre to the node broadband network to 98% of the population. This was to commence in 2008 and cost 4.7 Billion dollars. The "government" than wasted 20 Million dollars and 18 months on a tender process that hasnt delivered 1 single braodband service to a home on the mainland! We now have an implementation study to consider how to build the network which wont be completed until at least 2018.
Labor has since conceded that the price has blown out from $4.7Billion to $43Billion and there was a report on the ABC this morning that claimed it could even be double that - $86BILLION
I mean these people are HOPELESS!!! ABSOLUTELY....USELESS!
A report released by Henry Ergas and Alex Robson of Concept Economics, concluded that it would be IRRATIONAL to spend more than $17 Billion on the NBN. Moreover it concluded that " the taxpayers funding of the projects losses can lead to moral hazard, as well as direct political interference in project decisions." It also found that as the government would be both an owner and a regulator it had a conflict of interest creating soverign risk for investors.
All in all it's just another failed policy from one of the very worst politcal leadership groups I've ever seen and yet another reason to boot them out come August 21.
