Geez, I wish Costello was back leading government…

http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/politics/an-industry-in-profit-is-an-industry-worth-supporting-20111108-1n5az.html

costello had his chance to be leader when howard lost, after years of taunting beazley, jellyback etc but he squibbed out. uswing in his own words " did not have the ticker "

Having just got back from spending the last month in Europe and being bombarded with constant CNN International (it being the only English speaking channel available in our hotel rooms in France, Germany, Austria and Italy,) it looks as though our government are doing a stellar job by comparison to the a few of the European governments.

Italy has potential to be a bigger economic basket case than Greece. Spain is on the ropes too apparently.

I'll bet this was one of the major reasons why the British chose not to involve themselves with the Euro. It will be interesting to see whether the Russians will buy European debt, and whether it will be lent with the same strict criteria that was applied to them after the fall of the Soviet Union…

That brings back memories! When I was in Europe a few years ago my choices were CNN or BBC World Service. You'd get the same load of stories going around in a cycle. Robert Palmer died 15 times when I was in Avignon

About a month ago I brought up the plight of Gladstone Harbour since the dredging has begun for the GLNG Curtis Island project
Wondering if anyone caught the Four Corners story on the crisis which is getting increasingly worse

It is amazing that the govt (both state and federal ) has ignored the fact that Curtis Island is World Heritage listed and have totally ignored the complaints of the World Heritage people with the reports they have and how the information is so contradictory

Allso how the remains of the dredging is being dumped within 400 metres of the Great Barrier Reef
and how that isn't affecting the reef Or how the shipping levels are going to increase threefold in and around the Great Barrier Reef and how you plan to build 4 more mega wharves on the Qld coast Port Alma ,Mackay ,Townsville and north of Cooktown
Every report they use is of the information they have collated with their people and are not using external independant information which complains about the large amounts of heavy metals in the waters (Aluminium ,chromium ,arsenic etc) and the increased levels of torpidity since the dredging began

It is a joke how they can say how the dredging hasn't affected the Harbour when you see the pictures of Barramundi ,Blue Salmon with bulging red eyes which eventually literally explode ,covered in lesions ,skin growing over the fishes scales
Sharks with their whole underbody covered in huge red rash
Massive increases in the deaths of turtles and dugongs (tripled) in and around Gladstone
Schools of baitfish dying in huge numbers
How is this going to affect the snubbed fin dolphin a rare breed of Dolphin only found in and around Gladstone and Port Alma area which every person interviewed had no idea what the effects of the changes we are making is goping to affect them
It is funny how Brown and the Greens are backing the Labor party but they allow this to happen to us when they must know full well what is going on (I suppose 60 billion dollars is a lot of reasons to keep quiet)

The thing that irks me most is own our locals Leo Zussino head of the Gladstone Ports Authority can come out and say that it is the fresh water from the floods that is causing the issues Leo be honest we have had floods before now and for many thousands of years before and we have never seen anything like this before .

Also Leo be honest with the Gladstone people next federal election you will be running as the Labor Federal member for our electorate and this is the reason you are making the comments you are making Give a crap about our community for once instead of your own interests

SOS SOS SOS MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY Help Gladstone save our Harbour for the future generations Before i get labelled a Greenie I'm not Just a concerned local recreational fisherman who would like to catch a fish with my grandkids that we could actually eat Or be able to take the kids swimming at our local beaches without worrying whether what is affecting the marine life will affect humans

I have an idea for all the politicians ,ports authority representatives, scientests who say that the Harbour is fine Why don't we have a family fun day at Barney Point beach and you can bring your families and friends for a swim in the harbour Oh you are busy that day Funny that

Before you wonder what this has to do with the Wests Tigers The owner of the local Gladstone Fish Markets who is seen in the Four Corners interview is related to a legend of the Wests Tigers

If that's even remotely true Happy, that's a travesty. I'm no eco-warrior but allowing pollution to run unchecked is retarded.

Type Gladstone Harbour Barramundi and look at the pictures CB or anyone else for that matter Its disgusting %
The local fisheries ran at net at a popular Barra spot at 80% were diseased 80% That's right

I did see that story Happy and its a shocker.

I have always said that the most despicable party in politics is the Greens as they are a bunch of hypocritical lunatics. Something like this is right up their alley and should be the agenda that they are fighting for. Global emissions is a battle that cant be won from Australia. Saving our waterways is achievable if they had a go….

Isn't it funny how nature decides to fight back The sand flies (which on Curtis Island at this time of year can be shocking ) are literally chasing employees off the Island

Never thought I would ever show one bit of support for the sandflies but "GO THE SANDFLIES"

She may be one of the worst PM's in Australian history, time and again proving herself to be as trustworthy as a peadophilic school janitor, but there is no doubting that Juliar Gillard is a very good politician. Everyone thought it was a ballsy move knifing kevy-o-sevy and now she has done it again.

With her government and leadership flailing, she has pulled out a remarkable piece of political manouvering today by not only coaxing the speaker Harry Jenkins back to the table but has also managed to poach an opposition member, Peter Slipper, to be the new speaker of the house of reps. Effectively gaining 2 more votes in the process.

Shrewd move Ms Gillard…bravo. If only you put as much effort into leading this country as you do ensuring your own personal survival you'd gain more support.

I CALL FOR AN ELECTION! A REFERENDUM FOR THRUTH!!!!

ARRGHHHH THE SKY IS GONA FALL WHEN THIS HAPPENS!!

Careful Kaiser, you'll wake the neo-cons. A bloke resigns his job and its a conspiracy…

I'm not a Labor supporter at all, but I can completely understand Gillard making the move, as most usually forget the powerbrokers call the shots and she probably had very little say in the matter. It's not just Gillard preserving her position, but every Labor party member who has alot to lose.

As a friend of many members of the police force, and someone who considered joining the force also, I am personally upset that the NSW government, with the assistance of the CDP and S&F, are choosing to amend the current setup for the death and disability pension.

CB I think you and indeed the press give far too much credit to the "powerbrokers". Gillard is strong enough to make her own calls but in any case there is absolutely zero evidence to suggest this is anything more than Jenkins quitting.

Actually if I remember correctly Jenkins wasn't really keen for the role directly after the last federal election and I am sure he said as much in some interviews

Gillard - Knight to C5, CHECK!!
Abbott - **Stomps Feet** King to C7…
Gillard - Knight Captures Rook on E6 CHECK!
Abbott - King to C8...
Gillard - Tony, you can't, you would be in check from my bishop.
Abbott - Hey! Thats MY Bishop!
Gillard - Not anymore its not.....
