If Turnbull gets back he'll have to cut a deal with the right to get their support and I have no idea how he could achieve that. It would come down to a battle between the extreme-right (who are enjoying free reign with the media at the moment thanks to a hopeless govt.) and the centre + left of the party.
Robb, Joyce and co. are a formidable bunch

Funny, had Johny been left in we'd already have an ETS by now and no one would have battered an eyelid

i'm a coal miner and the problem with the ETS is its a blatant tax maybe if the money was going into emisson control or technology to reduce it might get welcomed better . Next election i will be voting liberal the first in my family in a long time.
ps- theres a strong chance we will be closing now so ill be looking for a new job thanks julie

Side note but a great way to add more money to the coffers is to remove the tax exempt status or mega churches.

FTR I was always a fan of the principal of an ETS or Carbon Tax. I just feel it's goals need to be better defined and that legislation should have been in place to re-invest in clean energy technology and green energy R&D so as to put the nations economy at the forefront of one of the biggest growth sectors leading into the next two decades.

Lamentably when you have to get into bed with the Greens to get anything done logic disappears and you tend to be beholden to the whims of the militant and half witted

Yes Thank you Kul you support my argument We can blame Labor voters for the mess we are in
At least if Johnny survives we keep Peter Costello who has more economic common sense in his little finger than the entire State and Federal Govt Labor parties combined and Turnbull would be his 2 IC
Far better than the rabble across the floor don't you think

Turnbull and Costello would never have worked together in a leader/deputy roll.

It is more likely that Abbott would work at an abortion clinic.

The fault lays not with the ALP voters but with a system that allows factional heavyweights to change the countries course without ever having to answer for their actions. The leaders who stifled the Rudd government and on the other side of the ailse removed Turnbull from his deserved position and likely succession (every exit poll showed this result) to the Prime Ministers office

Smeg If you vote for Labor thats what you deal with Factional and Union heavyweights who only give a crap about themselves and their Unions they represent
Rudd with his nature was only a brainsnap away from annoying the wrong union leader

How people who vote labor can't see this that whatever the politicians say means nothing once the Unions boys tell the pollies what is really going to happen amazes me

The same thing is in the liberal party with the Christian far right happy.

It has gotten to the same level as the way the union factional leaders run state ALP sub branches over the last 3 years

Smeg the difference is the Coalition only uses the Christian right when they need the numbers
In the Labor party the tail wags the dog ,everyone knows it and they still vote ALP :crazy

My experience would dictate otherwise with the Libs

How have any of the major decisions in the whole last period of Coalition dominance did they make decisions which benefited Big business GST Cost billions of dollars to all businesses , Immigration policies Businesses are screaming out for 457 foreign employees to help rural businesses etc etc etc The list goes on
Bet the ALP can't say the same thing Unions come first no matter what

Religious right not big business and that shift has occurred over the last three years.

It is clear for everyone to see that the union factions play a large role in the determination of ALP policy as that is not only a strong constituency base but also a strong fundraising base which bankrolls the party.

It is also clear that the religious right has the same hold over Liberal politics at this time and it has done for the last three years. It is a big danger sign as they are heading down a rocky path.

I can state quite factually that the reason Turnbull was stood aside was in part because of his support of an ETS but in the majority because of power brokers from within the party and outside from the new Christian right.

Turnbull is a great politician and has a great mind But he wasn't what the coalition need when on the wrong side of the floor
I think we will need Abbott to get us into power and Malcolm Turnbull to take over once in power he will make the right decisions once there I just pray it won't take too long and the Labour Party hasn't made any terminal mistakes which may set us back a generation (Oh hang on the carbon tax is already through the senate .Too late for that one )

Every exit poll at the last Federal election clearly demonstrates that with Turnbull or almost anyone else but Abbott at the helm the Coalition wins by comfortable majority.

His presence was the sole reason they didn't win.

Totally agree Smeg Turnbull isn't good when he needs to attack as an opposition leader needs to be (Abbott is perfect man for the job ) But when in power Turnbull is the man this country needs pulling the strings
Just for economic acumen alone he will make a great PM .

what are your thoughts on this recent rise in support for Labor smeg?

Granted they are still behind by a fair bit, but Labor has in last couple of months completely reversed their fortunes and have clawed back 5-6 points.

I'm wondering if it's an effect of Julia generally having good media recently and Abbott being quiet, or is it more regression to the mean?

I know you have addressed this question to Smeg but my 2 cents worth is this ;
Many Australians believe that it is only a matter of time before she is axed and this is what they are basing their support for the Labor Party in general
I can't be sure if KRudd is the replacement though
His daughter again last night backed her fathers words Kevin is happy being FM Whether that is true or not only the future can tell us

I think she's brought herself some time with her victory this week. If she can work out a deal on the pokies mess she might make it to the next election. Abbott is starting to struggle - he can't just keep saying no without having something to replace it.
