My biggest disappointment of the last 24 hours in the US is that Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon didn't pardon Snowden or Assange.

On the other hand, the development that cheers me the most is Biden's immediate rejoining of the Paris agreement and blocking of the dirty keystone pipeline.

They’re both traitors mate . They’re not whistle blowers . They’re enemies of the state . Just because they released stuff you want to know , it put many lives , and weakened the countries ability to defend itself . Especially when you listen to interviews where their motivations are dubious at best .

Whistleblowing on illegal mass surveillance (Snowden) and reporting on crimes and corruption (Assange) is in the public interest. It is journalism.

regarding Snowden, the NSA and CIA were flat out breaking the law and lying about it. Former CIA director John Brennan and James Clapper should be in gaol for illegal activity, not least for perjury for lying to Congress about what they were doing. They are the traitors.

Rogue intelligence agencies operating outside the law and outside even their own government's knowledge are in nobody's interest.

Nobody is debating that . But there were many other things leaked in those documents that weren’t breaking the law , and put lives at risk . That’s treason mate , regardless of where you sit on the political fence . The laws are clear , and your requirements when you get your security clearances are clear .

So what do you do if you complain to your superiors about industrial-scale illegal activity, and nothing happens? ( a la Snowden). Your duty is to your country and its laws, not to an organisation breaking laws and lying about it.

Journalism is never treason.

Treason is rogue agencies acting like an anti-democratic Stasi.

Treason is being called in front of Congress, asked if you are engaged in mass surveillance of the public (in defiance of the Constitution), and choosing to answer with perjury rather than the truth.

Treason is the US secretly arming Islamic extremists rebels (i.e the very people they were fighting in the war on terror) another fact we wouldn't have known without Wikileaks

It’s treason mate . He had top secret vetted clearance of which he used that to give to Wikileaks . There’s no nuance to it . Just because some of the stuff leaked was of benefit to the public , there were many other state secrets that weakened the US against its enemies .
That is the definition of treason. He knew what he was doing , the laws are clear . And by the way they’re clear here as well.
I don’t have any skin in the game because , whilst I agree what the NSA did was disgusting , Snowden isn’t some pillar of the community either . It’s hard to distinguish the man from the act . And who knows what those leaks did , and how many lives were lost or put at risk because of it .
You’ve got your morality firmly planted to your position . And I totally respect that .
I just don’t think we are in it all together . As much as I wished it was like that . Russia is not our friend . Nor is China or Iran . Or Saudi Arabia for that matter .
So how do you reconcile the fact that that’s where Snowden ended up . Doesn’t sit right with me .
The whole thing stinks .

Wikileaks has also published information about corruption and abuses of power etc in China, Russia, Syria and various other countries, even corruption in Kenya. it's a myth that they only publish stuff on America. The reason Snowden ended up stuck in Russia isn't because he chose there, but because the US wouldn't let him go anywhere else. He went to Moscow on transit to South America. They even illegally intercepted the plane of the Bolivian President thinking he was in it.

You don't defend freedom and democracy by allowing the emergence of a Stasi. You defend freedom and democracy by whistleblowing on any entity that tries to be the Stasi. If we allow agencies to carry on like the Stasi (and illegally) we may as well give up on the idea of freedom.

Disturbingly, these agencies are now using the hysteria about pro-Trumpists to advocate giving themselves even more power. Criminal and perjurer John Brennan (who has a plum media job instead of a gaol cell) is advocating just this.

(PS though we disagree, it wasn't me who downvoted you).

I don’t disagree with you actually . About anything . Other than the fact what he commuted was treason . Because it was .
If I rob a bank to pay for a dying kids medical bills , did I still not break the law ? That’s the point I was making . Right and wrong have very little to do with it unfortunately.
And Snowden should have stayed and stood trial , as you say , he exposed some serious injustices . But he fled , to Russia of all places .
It was ? the enemy of my enemy is my friend .
I look at it , the way most governments would look at it .Regardless of the morality , he betrayed his oath . And listening to him and reading some of the things he says were his motivation , I don’t believe he did it for the right reasons . He seems like he did it for the attention . That’s irrelevant I know , but I guess it makes me personally lose empathy for him .

The world sux mate . That’s one thing I know from everything I’ve seen . People are selfish , and disgusting , and evil , the higher up you go . But in saying that there’s nothing I wouldn’t do to protect my family , and by extension Australia. The USA is an evil place . There’s something just not right , with thier general view on the world . Even when they try and do the right thing , they take it way too far with things like “woke” and cancel culture . Even antifa . I just wanted that to be clear . I’m not pro America by any means , I just think Snowden should have answered for what he did . But he chose to flee , and it’s hard to respect that .

There is a distinct possibility that Australia will lose Google as a search engine due to Scamo and his crew trying to milk funds from them

I really feel it for google, where on earth in their mere 1.2 trillion dollars will they find a few bucks to pay for news content they currently get for free? They are just honest battlers trying to make a living!

In all honesty I hope they do pull their search engine here. It will wake up Australians to better alternatives that don't exploit their data. I have been using duckduckgo for years.

I expected Google to take that line if said laws were brought into being. From a corporate point of view I don’t think Google really have any choice but to ban searches.

They (Alphabet) are, arguably, the world's most powerful company since the British East India Company. Clipping their wings ever so slightly is great news.

Of course, Scomo is only doing this to benefit Rupert Mordor, there's no other way he would take on the power of a company like Alphabet. For once in my life though, I'm happy to take Rupert Mordor's side.

Poor Google my heart bleeds for them .... pay up or see ya boys

Unfortunately Australians will end up being poorer as a result. The laws are bogus. Google isn’t providing the news, it’s a result of a search that, for the main, links and sends traffic to the news site. Google search engine isn’t serving the news the news site is.

Technology is all about evolving, seems like google isint up for that. We been so reliant on Google in the west. It will be interesting to see what happens. A lot at stake for Google financially with SEO; backlinks and rankings etc businesses pay tons.

The trouble with the laws from a Google perspective is they lose control of their costs. If they have to pay for searches on news items and they are not allowed to control the searches, ie how many, then their cost are out of control. It may be more financially viable for then to shut searches down in Australia, which is what I will think will happen.

I think a much better approach would be not to allow them to offset their costs abroad so they have to pay fair corporate tax on the revenue generation in Australia. That’s the changes in the laws I’d like to see, and not just with Google.

While other search engine may seem an option, the last time I looked, a couple of years ago, most underlying search engines were using Google with only the front user display being different.

Yes that's a fair point on tax.

Don't know about others, but Duckduckgo does not use google. https://duckduckgo.com/

The problem being is not kids, there are many businesses that rely on Google search to send traffic to their business site. Without Google search many online businesses will go under.

From controlling free speech to blackmailing an entire country the tech giants are running our lives .. and many think this is Ok ! There’s one born every day 😂. And this is blatant blackmail! Do what we want or your entire country is cut off .

Yes but small business can go to pot for Murdoch. The LNP can't bite the hand of the kingmaker.

Funny how end stage predatory capitalism is the conservative wet dream until it doesn't work in their favour.
