I think we are going to see a big change in the traditional fullback.
Greg Inglis is definitely unconventional but he's done remarkably well at the back and other clubs will soon be looking to replicate that.

Inglis could basically play any position from 1-6 successfully

I still believe smaller more nimble players at fullback will be the norm

I think you are selling GI short, in addition to being a freak from 1-6, which he has already proven he would be a great back rower, a good prop and could probably be a stop gap half back !
Most guys GI's size won't have the engine to play full back, I don't expect it to become the norm any time soon

Selling GI short :roll

I just said in another thread I believe he is the 2nd best player in the world

I left out 7 as it wouldn't meet Ink's maximum height for a halfback requirements

maybe Im selliing him short as well, assuming he cant play hooker, he'd probably make a decent fist of that!

Ink would probably pull you up for Inglis being too tall for hooker as well Goose

We have rules and restrictions you know

Can't break those stereotypical and archaic ideas

Who?

You know him Flip , he's on the can of the stuff you use to polish your valuables

Actually they both sound more similar when you put it that way

yeh i played fullback as well, albeit 13 years ago now, but the descriptions are spot on.
i came from an aussie rules background - but having watched league all my life - and i was amazed that all i had to do was my job and the players who actually knew what they were doing were happy!

i was lucky in my team in that if i returned the ball well and made tackles, i had done my job and a perfect game for me was just not making any mistakes.

fortunately i could mark the ball well (league balls are awesome to catch compared to an afl one!), tackle and read the play okay. mostly i stayed up for chips and breaks about 10-15m behind the line, directly behind where the ball was (sweeping constantly) for the first 4 tackles, then drop back in a position that would allow me to not have the ball kicked over my head, but shallow enough to still run on to a chip, or breaking player if needed.

luckily for me, i had great help with attacking sets, so just ran around backing up constantly and had great help telling me when i was in the play and the line i had to run.

i think one of the most important jobs for a fullback is to let his wingers know that as far as kicks through go, it is the fullbacks job to return it if there is any doubt whatsoever. i cant stand when a fb and winger get in each others way in this situation and the ball bounces… im looking at you moltzen!!

playing wing is the easiest position on the field. i started out there and the job is simple: make your tackles in defence, try to keep your opposite number on your outside, never run or get pushed into touch (cant stand when that happens!) make sure you're onside and run fast and score tries!
