Positives Cmon we have many still

This year has plenty of positives for the team and club…..

Stability within the whole organisation....
A very good culture developing around the team and club....
Very good depth this year to help when injuries hit....
This squad has shown a much tougher mentality than many previous seasons....
The team plays for the full 80 mins and shows great "intestinal fortitude" a never give up attitude, excellent to see from a fan and members view...
Although many people criticise some of our depth players such as Pita Godinet,he is still part of the squad and does his best to his ability,as do many others, they should be thanked not knocked because even if they aren't great NRL standard players, they give their best and have helped the team win games even when they show lower standard play than their much maligned teammates ....
We have a coach who many people applaud for his skills with coaching players and his family values,he is a great human being whom many people like and has turned this club around from being a basket case to a very competitive professional team...

just my opinion of things this year....what a great season so far.....

This

Awesome summary totally agree the positive changes are easy to see imo. We really probably have the least talented squad in the comp but wow they compete if as a supporter you cant be happy with that your nevwr going to be happy.

Also bloody injuries our depth has been amazing. Other teams are using the injury thing as an excuse where as its never mentioned with us even though we have 10000 of them to key players.

I personally have never felt prouder of a playing group

I love this thread. The game was high quality so much better than many games on the weekend. They never throw in the towel. And are way ahead of quite a few teams un the comp. Plus we still have a few players to come back.

Sorry to be negative in a positive thread, but I disagree.
I wouldnt call it high quality, lots of errors…lots or penalties, it was a bludger of a game imo

And all thos banging on about 3x2 point losses, yes- while its better than 20 point losses...these are the losses that cost teams semis spots - are we the new canberra raiders?

Well ink that's a bit of data selection bias going on there.

Close losses and big losses both cost teams semi finals spots. Total losses is what is important, regardless if a significant # of those are close losses. In fact I'd argue even a run of close losses are manageable, because it at least means you are closer to winning than a run of heavy losses.

I haven't crunched all the numbers but I would expect that teams who only lose by small margins typically end up winning enough of those games to make the Top 8\. Teams that miss the finals would normally have a liberal number of big losses under their belts as well.

Take Saints 2017 for example. They won 12/24, won 5/10 games decided by 6 points or less, but everyone thinks about that last-round loss to Bulldogs where a maligned Lichaa barges over from DH. Sure it hurt, Tigers fans know the feeling, but it ignores the 10 other losses they incurred in the previous 17 rounds. Any one of those losses, any of a handful of bad decisions or missed tackles could have had a different outcome.

To be a successful year in 2018, all Tigers have to do this year is make the finals - that's huge progress for us. We will probably make the finals by winning 50% plus one games, i.e. 13 wins. That means 8 more wins in the next 16 rounds. If you can't do that, well honestly you don't really deserve to be in the Top 8, even if we lose another 9 games by 2 points or 9 games by 22 points.

Commentators always harp on about many close losses/missing finals.

I always thought they meant that team would have a pretty good f/a….(probably better than 7th and 8th spot teams) but suffered where it mattered most, comp points... But tbh I haven't dug into it all that deeply

I think commentators just keep those specific games in mind, e.g. Tigers losing to Newy Rd 26 a few years back.

In terms of teams actually qualifying based on points, there are a few absolutes (since 2005):

- only 9/104 teams (8.65%) have made the Top 8 with a negative points diff . Two of those were single-digit differentials (Cronulla and Souths 2015), however the max was Cows in 2007 who were -71\. Of those sides, 4 lost the first week of the finals, 3 lost the second week (1 win, noting that Cronulla and Souths played each other in 2015), 2 lost the 3rd week (2 wins), none made the GF.

- only 13/102 (12.75%) teams have failed to make the finals with a positive F/A. 6 of these teams finished 9th, 4 finished 10th; however this includes the Storm 2010 and Warriors 2006 who were docked points, so really it's 11 sides. These are probably the situations you are thinking of, some 11 teams with positive F/A, who probably had big wins and small losses on average. So maybe 10% of sides can claim overall decent win form but a few clutch losses to miss out.

- Only two teams (1.92%) have ever made the Top 8 without winning more than half their matches - Broncos 2007, Titans 2016\. Both sides finished 8th, won 11/24, but Titans had a draw as well. Both sides were knocked out finals Week 1 and both sides conceded >= 40 points during those matches.

- 14/104 teams (13.46%) have made the Top 8 with 50% win records (Dogs even finished 6th in 2007).

Positives

We are getting our monies worth so far this year. I haven't switched of the telly or walked out before full time in a single game so far this year.

Our defence is being talked up.

We some big names to come back into 1st grade.

Unlikely to have anybody out during SOO

We have a positive for and against

Positives:
defence much better.
not giving up.
I'm also positive that the team will frustrate all supporter's again in season 2018\.
