Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter says it is “unacceptable” for his side to miss the finals
Dean Ritchie The Daily Telegraph March 04, 2014 10:00PM

MICK Potter has spoken out on the pressure and pain which engulfed his first season as Wests Tigers coach, declaring: “I had to make some tough decisions - and I had to stand my ground.’’

Potter survived being ousted by the club’s board and returns in 2014 fresh and ready to help rebuild Wests Tigers.

And in this exclusive one-on-one interview with Dean Ritchie yesterday, Potter outlined his ambitions, claiming it “unacceptable’’ if his team misses the finals.

Dean Ritchie: Do you have any regrets from last year?

Mick Potter: Not regrets but I was disappointed in aspects, obviously not winning enough games. That was a disappointment we all felt. Regrets…I had to make some tough decisions and I had to stand my ground and be confident my principles and structures were going to hold in place. I never compromised. If you compromise you bow to someone else and you’re not doing it the way you think is the right way. And the honest way. It was about discipline and sticking to my guns.

DR: Could you be accused of being inflexible?
\

MP: I am flexible to a point of doing things right and doing things wrong. Once it becomes more wrong than right, then you don’t do it. I’m flexible with facets of play and playing to your strengths. If you’re not playing to your strengths, that needs to be looked at. I thought we did as best we could with what we had. Flexibility is a word that can be used as a positive or a negative. I don’t think the game is that complicated. You don’t need to revolutionalise it to find an easy fix.

DR: It must have been terribly difficult season reading all those back page headlines about your job?

MP: It was a tough year for the club, me and the players. It wasn’t what everyone wanted but the silver lining was that some of the young players, who probably wouldn’t have played a lot of first grade, did. And they will be better for that experience and hopefully will be better prepared for what’s coming this year.

DR: How did you personally cope about suggestions you would be sacked?

MP: It does affect you. It’s frustrating because sometimes you can’t say what you really feel because it’s not the right thing for the club or players. I think I had some very good people around me at the time to support me. That’s all you need. I had it here at work and with my family.

DR: What is acceptable to you this year Mick, and what is unacceptable?

MP: An acceptable result is making the eight and that is what we are striving for.

DR: So if you miss the eight, that would unacceptable?

MP: I think so, yes. You put yourself under pressure and the team under pressure. You make the eight or you don’t make the eight.

DR: Given your results last year, are you a club starting 2014 under pressure?

MP: When you come 15th from 16th there is always pressure. We just want to win more.

DR: Benji Marshall has left. A good thing, or bad thing?

MP: We’ll see when we either start accumulating points or don’t accumulate points whether it will be a factor. I think with Benji not being here, Luke Brookes is very capable young player and it has allowed Braith (Anasta) to step into the number six and show what he can do. He got moved around a bit last year. That was unfortunate but necessary. I think we have a better balance there.

DR: Was Marshall difficult to deal with?

MP: Benji wasn’t difficult to deal with at all. He knew what good practice was and he knew what he needed to do. I think he is a very intelligent player. He knows the game inside out and knows how to create space. It was just unfortunate at times he knew he could have been playing better. And there were times when he played pretty well for us.

DR: You mentioned Luke Brookes. What do expect from him this season?

MP: I expect Luke to do a lot more good than bad. He will have those games when he doesn’t have a ten out of ten rating game. Most young blokes are unable to sustain a level in the NRL for a long period of time when they’re young. And he’s young. I expect him to have a dip here and there but we will push through.

Must be confident to set the bar there before round 1.

And jeez how can the biggest newspaper in Australia justify not fact checking the spelling of Luke Brooks's last name!?

Gotta hand it to Potter he pretty much tells it like it is… I hope we do make the 8 there is no reason why we can't IF injuries are kind to us. I'd like to see Potter here for the next 3 years after this.

I really like Potter. He's a straight shooter, and a decent bloke from all reports. He seems a lot more comfortable in his role this year and probably pretty relieved last year is over. He's blown out the cobwebs on his first season as a head coach in the NRL, with a team he inherited and a very limited pre season with the boys last year. He's made some good signings this year in positions we needed, brought in a youth policy and is starting a new club culture which seems to be working well with a mix of experience and youth. He might be setting the bar high, but better to aim high and fall short trying.

Kidwell and Payten will add to the coaches box. With the strong amount of Polynesian kids in the club, Kidwell is an astute signing and will help these kids and toughen up our defence. Payten having a good relationship with the young guys from his time in the 20's and blokes he's played with over the years will also be great value.

Top 8 is certainly not out of the question.

yep, ive been a potter fan since day 1\. i think he and mayer have been great for the club and the coming years will see their plans really take effect.

Mick has drawn his line in the sand

Top 8 or bust

I don't know if I'd be putting that in black and white

People on the board will have long memories and potter will need lots of things go right to make the Top 8

Very well put and I agree with practically everything you've said. Particularly about the new "culture" he has built, of the team that he inherited in the 11th hour so to speak.

I spoke with him briefly when he was in Auckland for the Nines and asked him about how he was feeling about the season. He's quietly confident of getting to the finals! I liked his honesty and forthrightness and he doesn't say things unnecessarily - he tells it like he sees it; there's something genuine about the man (almost Bennett-like).

If coaching in the UK is ANYTHING to go by then I'm hoping that his coaching abilities and potential in the NRL will be realised rather than deficiencies exposed in the form of a top 8 result this year. Maybe that's a 'deliverable' in his contract.

On the eve of the start of the NRL season, I'm wishing him and the team every success this year!

Same goal Mayer has spoken about previously.
'14 - top 8
'15 - top 4
'16 - GF

Imagine the mayhem had he said "We hope to get close to the top eight this year"

I hate Dean Richie….when I see him on TV I wanna belt him and even reading that I felt the same

I dont see it that way.

It was a very leading question, clever reporting because any coach outside the 8 last year with that question would say the same thing.

They got their headline.

Every coach in the NRL would have said the same. on the eve of round one of course you set high goals.

Don't get me wrong Iam a Potter fan and I hope he really turns the joint around, but he is going to need plenty of luck to get us anywhere near the eight.

I will be happy if the team can compete against the better sides

It would be great to make the 8 but realistically if the team can compete each week and just miss the 8 I would be very happy and Coach Potter can have his 3 yr upgrade . Then a premiership in that period…!

To make the 8, we need to win 12 games with a good for and against. We need to beat the following teams teams;

St George, Penrith, Canberra, Parramatta, Gold Coast (either once or twice depending on our draw), and teams;

Broncos at home, Newcastle at home, NQ at home, Cronulla at home, Warriors at home, Canterbury at home (depending on our draw).

(Teams excluded home or away: Souths, Roosters, Manly, Melbourne).

If you break it down like this (obviously I am uncertain of our actual draw) and maybe even aim for a possibility of beating a bigger side around origin time then it is not impossible.

Is that a boil on Potter's forehead?

Considering Farah, Woods and Richards have been quarantined this week for contracting boils, then i would say yes, yes it is

I like the attitude, our guys should be shooting to make and compete in finals. Sure we face a big task to do it, but if the players believe it anything is possible.

One of the best things we had going for us in 2005 was our self belief and attitude. I'd love to drill that mental toughness into our club.
