Potter interested in WT coaching position

Potter reckons he could weave magic as Tigers coach
BRAD WALTER October 03,

SUPER LEAGUE coach of the year Michael Potter has expressed an interest in the vacant Wests Tigers job after returning home to Australia.
Potter, who was yesterday voted the best coach in Super League by his peers at rival clubs after his efforts with Bradford this year, turned down an offer from the Bulls' new owners and wants a job in the NRL.
While yet to speak to anyone at the Tigers since the club decided last week to move Tim Sheens into a different role, Potter said he would be keen to do so if there was a chance he could get the coaching job.

''If I am asked I would certainly go and talk to the people at Wests Tigers,'' Potter told the Herald. ''They play a good brand of footy and it would be a good opportunity. There is no point throwing your hat in the ring if you are not asked because jobs aren't like that in rugby league, I don't think. But if they wanted to talk to me I would be happy to do so.''
After seven years in charge of Catalans, St Helens and Bradford, Potter feels he has something to offer as an NRL coach but would consider an assistant's role.
''I would like to think there are some jobs around, even as an assistant,'' he said. ''The NRL is the premier competition and if I can get an opportunity to help someone out I will do it.''
''I have been coaching since 1997 [at Illawarra] so it has been a while. I like doing it and without boasting I think I am quite good, and I have got a couple of little niches that I think I am very good at.
''I think I am able to get the best out of players and improve them individually. I think I have shown that in the years I have been over in England and France.''
After being appointed as Catalans foundation coach in 2006, Potter steered the Perpignan-based club to the Challenge Cup final the following season and third place in Super League in 2008.
He also took St Helens to successive grand finals in 2009 and 2010 and missed the play-offs this season with Bradford only because the club was docked six points for being placed into administration.
''I just need an opportunity and for someone to say, 'You're the bloke to take us forward','' Potter said.
''I don't think I have left a team in worse shape than when I started.''
The Herald has been told a sub-committee appointed last week is still preparing of short list of candidates, while reviewing other positions on the Tigers coaching staff - including a role for Sheens.
Parramatta-bound assistant Matt Parish, Sydney Roosters under-20s coach Jason Taylor and Melbourne deputy Kevin Walters have also been linked to the job.

The concerning thin about this all is that Walters nor potter ha heard from the tigers, was it only parish they had spoken too??

How slow is this mob, he's got the runs on the board.
I'll call him myself if I have to.
If he's that keen we should at least be talking to him before the Warriors pick him up.

I like his moxy. Why on Earth has he not been approached? When I heard we were losing Sheens he was the first person I thought of.

I'd have no problem with Potter being named. I think the Tigers will make a well thought out decision here, despite some of the critics getting into them. No need to rush it- a couple of weeks worth of interviewing as opposed to naming someone this week will make little difference.

Potter might have some interesting UK based contacts that might be interested in playing in the NRL. Wonder who his halfback was over there?

Wow the club is taking their sweet time…Potter sounds like an astute coach....doesn't mind talking himself up a little too...which means he'll show a few at the club who's boss

Humphreys is in charge of the sub committee to appoint the new coach. According to the news article they are still preparing a short list. That should have taken all of 10 minutes. Send an email to these people asking for a CV and then interview. The GF is over, we should know by the end of this week.

These men are all in Sydney or nearby.

I fear that by the time the Board, Balmain, Wests, and the CEO get through their little meetings and committee nonsense the decision will be filtered down to a rubbish compromise tick the boxes kind of person rather than right guy for the job.

Well Bryce Gibbs just stated on Twitter that the tiger boys have told him a new coach has been decided on. Whether thats just Gibbsy stirring the pot i dont know.

Gee he wanted the top job there and they returned the favour by dropping Des in a year early. Most people would have sought the top job somewhere else. I will be happy as long as it isn't Nathan Brown, Brian Smith et al. Those blokes were given the arse for a reason.

Except Nathan Brown wasn't given the arse and has a job as StHelens coach next season

And he took Huddersfield from the bottom to the challenge cup final, and consecutive finals appearances,St Helens liked what they saw and signed him up,so yeh,he got the arse, some people are poor judges boonboon, lucky he ain't doing Humphrey's job.

Yes, given the arse by the Dragons is what was meant. Although I wouldn't mind Brown attempting his signature face slap on Benji during a match. Benji's history shows the other bloke typically comes worse off.
