**Mick Potter - Thu 25/10/12
New Wests Tigers coach talks about his new position at the club his plans to bring success at the Tigers again and all about the lessons he has learnt from his time coaching in the English Super League
8.91Mb - MP3**

Says essentially - Accountability through performance

As Citizen Tiger said when he rang the open line, I really like how Potter doesn't use throw away cliches to try and avoid a question, shows great integrity in a coach. He has obviously pin pointed the same flaws as most here on the forum could see and i'm really excited to see how that translates through our playing style next year. 2013 could be the year we get to see how a "disciplined" Benji Marshall really plays and that excites me to no end.

Fingers crossed but he sounds like Ricky Stuart when he started at the Roosters,i hope we don't go thru whats evolved there.I think imposing his will on Benji & Robbie will be the hardest task he will face as a new coach,if he succeeds there we should make the 8.He has ID Benji as the playmaker & leader(along with Robbie) for the younger players when things get tough(which in the modern game is almost every week) which indicates at this early stage he will be giving a lot of younger players a run.
I remember Jack Gibson saying that the value of a standout playmaker is not what they do but what they might do in the minds of the opposing defence ,then its up to the other 12 players to take advantage of that situation close to the line.Sheens, particulary last year with Benji, lost that advantage to my way of thinking.

Benji and Robbie carried us last year with the instability in the halves, injury and misfiring backs.

I wouldn't be to harsh on them in the slightest for 2012.

They are absolute guns.

We need to support Mick and the team.

I asked them to ask him what his intentions were re: Anasta considering Marshall & Miller are in the halves.

He said while hes comfortable in the halve he's also capable at LOCK …but he will see how all players acquit and apply themselves over pre season

Rather non commital as expected at this stage

Anasta in the backrow makes the most sense. Most likely at Lock where he can take some pressure off the ball players

Well he can't be less effective then Heighno was under Sheens instruction

SS: It seemed to be a long & drawn out process, where you at anytime frustrated with the process?
MP: Yes i was as it got towards the back end of the process with no decision really but i can appreciate they were doing their research & making sure they got the right person & done all their checks.
SS: Have you started & are the boys back yet & what discussions have you had with them so far?
MP: Yes I've started, the players are back 5th Nov & what I've been doing at the minute is talking to the staff individually. The staff start officially on Monday & we'll get together & work out our content of our training & a little bit about our philosophy & how we want to go forward. In between all that, I've been talking too numerous players, I've had a chat to about half a dozen players & will try to get to the other blokes individually before they all come in as a group for pre season training.
SS: Have you had a chat with Benji & Farah?
MP: Ive phoned both of them & i think Farah is away, Benji was in yesterday & i had a quick chat with him but we will be having a more detailed chat on Monday at 10am. I will be pretty demanding on him & i think he wants to be more demanding on himself.
SS: What do you mean about that, in terms of demand?
MP: Just how he gets around the park, how he cracks the whip with other players, how he leads & i want him to lead by example. I think he's done a good job at it but that he knows his role.
SS: There's been high expectations on this club for the last couple of years, no more so than this season, when you look at the roster you've got, how excited are you about what you can do next season?
MP: Potential is the word that gets thrown around a bit & i think this team has potential. It's my job to make sure individually & as a team they reach their potential. I'm excited about the senior players that are here & I'm as excited for the juniors that are coming through. I think Warren McDonald has done a fantastic job but it's a great catchment area. I went to a Wests presentation last night & the amount of players playing in the south western region is phenomenally.
SS: Has humpy & WT been able to give you any indication what resources they can provide above & beyond what they have been providing up till this point with Tim Sheens?
MP: It's a case of treading carefully with resources but I'm going to be into his ribs this week about pushing the barrier out a little bit for a little more resources & equipment wise & getting a little bit into the sports science stuff. I have to sell the benefits to Steve & the benefits if we do get all this, is that little 1% extra that perhaps were going to benefit out of.
SS: Will you have to address the strong personalties of Benji & farah & will you address that with Benji tomorrow?
MP: I don't see that as being a problem & its just a case of letting them know that they are leaders & influentially players, everyone looks up to them, they have to set the example at all times. I think they have done a good job up till now & i just want them to take it to another step. When it gets tough, their the blokes the young blokes will look to help them out & get them through to tipping them into more wins than loses.
SS: How many WT games would of you watched in the last two seasons?
MP: Just this year i dropped of towards the back end of the year & watched Dogs, Storm, Broncos & Rabbits. I would of watched probably 14 games this year.
SS: What were your initial thoughts after watching those games without having any contact with the club & not knowing this position was becoming available?
MP: I dont want to tread on anyone's toes but i thought they might of been able to get forward that little bit more & with a bit more vigour. Their style of play was very good but tilted the balance too far towards being to flamboyant down their own end & trying to get out of jail without that really hot kick chase game, that built pressure & it was more come up with a trick play once or twice to often.
SS: Have you spoken to Adam Blair & if not when?
MP: i'll probably get to Blair mid week, I'm in the thrones of doing that early in the week to try & round up my appointments.
SS: A question from a listener who emailed in  Where do you envisage playing Anasta with Benji & Miller potentially in the same position?
MP: Anasta can play a half back role & he can also play a 5/8 role , he's not unaccustomed to playing lock either. I want to see how they scrub up in the pre season & who's going to be the best fit for the team
SS: What would you say to WT fans that MP will be successful in season 2013?
MP: There's no secret formula for the WT, IT'S WORK DAMN HARD IN THE PRE SEAON, BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF & YOUR TEAM MATES & THAT'S WHAT I EXPECT. Try & enjoy it on the back of it & if your winning, you'll enjoy it more.

Had some handy coaches as a player Ryan ,Gould ,Smith and would of thought if he was at the Saints in 84 Roy Masters as well .

He would of taken a lot from being coached by them

Someone mentioned to me that he was one of the hardest working coaches in the ESL

MP: Anasta can play a half back role & he can also play a 5/8 role , he's not unaccustomed to playing lock either. I want to see how they scrub up in the pre season & who's going to be the best fit for the team

??? he's never played half back….........I hope this is only just talk because Anasta wants to be in the halves.....don't listen to him

Hate this time of year especially after a failed year.

Potential and weight of expectations seems to do my head in.

Thx for the summary above and I'm real happy with MP.

With that goose Andrew Webster being on the panel today on Sports Sunday, I wonder what angle he's going to be running with in tomorrow's DT. He can't be to bad a bloke I suppose if he wanted to give a Mr Ink a coaster? after his tongue in cheek email about Potter's hairline being 7 inch's wider this time next year. Or something similar as I was being distracted by the tin lid while listening.

I like the sports science reference. This is where the 1% improvements are likely to be found. Its the path Hasler is blazing very successfully.

Hopefully Humphrey's & the board can see the benefits outweighs the costs & give him the green light to go ahead with his plans.
