Potter Interview on Sports Sunday 2KY

i think with the liberty the board gave sheens, as in let him do whatever he wished might be an indication about how they treat potter as well. i think potter will get whatever he wants from the board and the CEO

i think it is great news that potter has at least identified the problems, accepted them and is ready to work on them. unlike sheens who kept working on our strengths without doing anything about the weaknesses.

the next step is to solve the problems. Good luck potter.

The board didnt have to worry about an ex coach owed nearly $1m during Sheens' term like they will while Potter is here

I like the sports science reference. This is where the 1% improvements are likely to be found. Its the path Hasler is blazing very successfully.

Bradford have one of the best training facilities in the UK, that was built during Steve McNamara's tenure and the Club have taken the sports science on board, so it was in place when Mick joined, it's no surprise he wishes the Tigers to invest in it as there are benefits, although the Bulls don't seem to have benefitted from it so far due to all sorts of issues mainly off field, it is a long term project and will come good for them. Most big Clubs in all different sports are investing heavily in top class training facilities coupled with sports science to keep ahead of the rest, when its tight at the top that 1% can make all the difference! Hope your Board can be persuaded!

??? he's never played half back….........I hope this is only just talk because Anasta wants to be in the halves.....don't listen to him

I think he's had a game or two as half under Fittler(may have been Smith) but like his go at Fullback it didn't last long.Surely to keep his spot in the Team it will have to be lock or backrow,he's one player that can make a break but the last few seasons he gets run down by opposing Forwards despite the fact they have to turn & chase.

With Anasta and Fulton in the backrow together, it just looks too light I think one will be on the bench. you can't have both on the field together if Anasta plays in the forwards imo

You may also find that Mick likes Players to be able to play in 2 or 3 different positions, to cover for unexpected injuries on the field or a lot of injuries that pile up sometimes! So you will probably see some interesting line ups pre and early season, some seem obvious others not so!

SS: It seemed to be a long & drawn out process, where you at anytime frustrated with the process?
MP: Yes i was as it got towards the back end of the process with no decision really but i can appreciate they were doing their research & making sure they got the right person & done all their checks.
SS: Have you started & are the boys back yet & what discussions have you had with them so far?
MP: Yes I've started, the players are back 5th Nov & what I've been doing at the minute is talking to the staff individually. The staff start officially on Monday & we'll get together & work out our content of our training & a little bit about our philosophy & how we want to go forward. In between all that, I've been talking too numerous players, I've had a chat to about half a dozen players & will try to get to the other blokes individually before they all come in as a group for pre season training.
SS: Have you had a chat with Benji & Farah?
MP: Ive phoned both of them & i think Farah is away, Benji was in yesterday & i had a quick chat with him but we will be having a more detailed chat on Monday at 10am. I will be pretty demanding on him & i think he wants to be more demanding on himself.
SS: What do you mean about that, in terms of demand?
MP: Just how he gets around the park, how he cracks the whip with other players, how he leads & i want him to lead by example. I think he's done a good job at it but that he knows his role.
SS: There's been high expectations on this club for the last couple of years, no more so than this season, when you look at the roster you've got, how excited are you about what you can do next season?
MP: Potential is the word that gets thrown around a bit & i think this team has potential. It's my job to make sure individually & as a team they reach their potential. I'm excited about the senior players that are here & I'm as excited for the juniors that are coming through. I think Warren McDonald has done a fantastic job but it's a great catchment area. I went to a Wests presentation last night & the amount of players playing in the south western region is phenomenally.
SS: Has humpy & WT been able to give you any indication what resources they can provide above & beyond what they have been providing up till this point with Tim Sheens?
MP: It's a case of treading carefully with resources but I'm going to be into his ribs this week about pushing the barrier out a little bit for a little more resources & equipment wise & getting a little bit into the sports science stuff. I have to sell the benefits to Steve & the benefits if we do get all this, is that little 1% extra that perhaps were going to benefit out of.
SS: Will you have to address the strong personalties of Benji & farah & will you address that with Benji tomorrow?
MP: I don't see that as being a problem & its just a case of letting them know that they are leaders & influentially players, everyone looks up to them, they have to set the example at all times. I think they have done a good job up till now & i just want them to take it to another step. When it gets tough, their the blokes the young blokes will look to help them out & get them through to tipping them into more wins than loses.
SS: How many WT games would of you watched in the last two seasons?
MP: Just this year i dropped of towards the back end of the year & watched Dogs, Storm, Broncos & Rabbits. I would of watched probably 14 games this year.
SS: What were your initial thoughts after watching those games without having any contact with the club & not knowing this position was becoming available?
MP: I dont want to tread on anyone's toes but i thought they might of been able to get forward that little bit more & with a bit more vigour. Their style of play was very good but tilted the balance too far towards being to flamboyant down their own end & trying to get out of jail without that really hot kick chase game, that built pressure & it was more come up with a trick play once or twice to often.
SS: Have you spoken to Adam Blair & if not when?
MP: i'll probably get to Blair mid week, I'm in the thrones of doing that early in the week to try & round up my appointments.
SS: A question from a listener who emailed in  Where do you envisage playing Anasta with Benji & Miller potentially in the same position?
MP: Anasta can play a half back role & he can also play a 5/8 role , he's not unaccustomed to playing lock either. I want to see how they scrub up in the pre season & who's going to be the best fit for the team
SS: What would you say to WT fans that MP will be successful in season 2013?
MP: There's no secret formula for the WT, IT'S WORK DAMN HARD IN THE PRE SEAON, BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF & YOUR TEAM MATES & THAT'S WHAT I EXPECT. Try & enjoy it on the back of it & if your winning, you'll enjoy it more.

Thanks WestsTigers4Life, was good to read the radio transcript for those who didn't hear it  MP was a good reliable, gutsy player who put out the same effort every week, if we get the same out of the 2013 Tigers I will be more than happy and we will give it a shake come September. Can't wait

potter wouldn't have any unrealistic expectations from the board anyway.
he'll more than likely know what the board is capable of providing him with and make plans accordingly.
and if he doesnt, then who is the club honest with, if not the coach?

Thats fair enough but hopefully it wont take Mick long to realise that versatility is a strong point of this squad with many players being able to handle different positions quite naturally. So no need to move guys around too much just to gain experience for possible injuries they may occur.

Looking at our squad

Moltzen…...fullback, centre, 5/8, half
Ayshford......centre, 5/8, backrow
Benji........1/2, 5/8
Fulton.......Backrow, 5/8, hooker
Anasta......backrow, halves
Thompson....backrow, centre
Blair.......lock, 2nd row, front row
Bell........lock, 2nd row, front row
BMM.......backrow.....and at a pinch can cover front row and centre
Simona......fullback, wing, centre
Nofo......fullback, wing, centre
Sironen....5/8, centre, backrow
\
\
Thas pretty versatile.

I think the challenge will be ensuring the guys who may be needed in the halves all are 100% comfortable with the plays and structure. So getting enough training time for Miller, Benji, Anasta, Sironen, Fulton and Moltzen to all be comfortable in the role will be the key. I think throwing them all in during trials and early games would be a bad idea as it will set our first choice halves back a little in their combination and cohesion. Training is where it needs to happen, and if at some stage an injury occurs, whatever chosen player comes in will have the knowledge to quickly adapt.

We have sat here and whinged how Sheens kept playing players out of position and here we are talking about player versatility

Lets try something completely different and play them in their best positions

Works for other successful NRL sides

Happy u have missed the point. It appears Blotto knows Potter, and has said Mick will move players around to gain versatility to cover injuries. For me he doesnt really need to do it, only make sure those capable of playing in the halves all know the plays.

They didn't just sack Sheens one year into a three year contract for no reason. It appears that the board will no longer accept poor performance (whatever the catalyst was for this seemingly abrupt change in their approach to this is anyone's guess,) but they (the board,) would no doubt have minimum expectations that Potter will need to meet next season.

It has been a rather costly lesson for the club, but don't think that the board (or sections of the fanbase and sponsors,) will be happy with just scraping into the eight only to be barrelled out in week one of the finals with the squad we have.
