Great days racing yesterday, I was at Caulfield for the Cup along with 28,000 others( biggest crowd since pre Covid) plus watching the 50,167 at Randwick took me back quite a few years when crowds were regularly of that size.
Spring racing warming up down in Bleak City, I’m off to the Geelong Cup on Wednesday then the Valley on Friday night and Saturday ( Cox Plate).
The track is closing for 2 years whilst it’s reconfigured and new stands built.
Will be a big day ! Daryl Braithwaite coming along to perform “Horses” for the closure. Melbourne equivalent of “Sweet Caroline “.

Spring racing in Melb is the best , Derby day is the pinnacle

Speaking of The Cup...

Early thoughts, but I like the prep of Middle Earth & Zarduzi for 2 horses that haven't caught a lot of headlines.

Also, watching Deakin & like what I've seen.

None should be considered in the favourites, but I have liked the prep. Neither have finished more than 6 lengths off the winner in G1 races this prep.

Deakin has never been outside of 3.5 lengths of 2 good winners in the Caulfield Cup & Turnbull.

Middle Earth had a great win in the Aust Cup Prelude back in March of Smokin Romans. Worth a watch.

Zardozi ran a good 4th last year & has not been too far off the pace without results this prep. She ran a great race in the Australian Cup this year too.

Really like Deakin. Last 3 starts he's been 3 lengths, under 3 lengths & then just over 3 lengths from the winner in an Open & 2 G1's (Turnbull & Caulfield) & has good metres in his legs leading in.

Admire your opinions so far out from the big race. Despite understanding the key lead up races I have to wait until all they are all run. Then I can try and make sense of the data.

Really only the Cox, Moonee Valley Cup & Geelong Cup of any significance to run. And the Cox Plate hasn't been a great indicator for the Melbourne Cup lately.

Barriers & conditions...jockeys...they'll all play their part. But what I've looked for, I've liked from those 3 in particular.
