RADICAL SHAKEUP TO NRL SCHEDULE ON THE CARDS

Written by STAFF WRITERS , November 11, 2015
THE NRL broadcast schedule for 2016 could undergo radical changes as early as next season with Thursday night and a 6pm game on Friday set to be introduced as permanent fixtures.

The proposed move would bring an end to Monday night football with Fox Sports set to broadcast the new Friday evening timeslot.

In another shakeup all three of Channel Nine’s matches across the round could be simulcast on Fox Sports at a cost of around $15 million.

The current television deal is still valid until the end of the 2017 season but if all parties involved agree, these changes could very well be introduced next season.

POTENTIAL 2016 NRL TV SCHEDULE
Thursday
8pm: Nine

Friday
6pm: Fox Sports
8pm: Nine

Saturday
3pm: Fox Sports
5.30pm: Fox Sports
7.30pm: Fox Sports

Sunday
2pm: Fox Sports
4pm Nine

Good luck getting Crowds to the ground 6pm on a Friday night…

Well it is a TV product now...NRL you reap what you sow...

Oh and if that means the Bronc's FTA every Friday night....boooooooooooo

6pm Friday is just dumb. They'll be lucky to ever get over 10k to one of those, no matter who's playing. It's even too early for TV or a lot of people who will still be on their way home from work. It's also been talked about as a "pub game". Don't they know 20 people watching in a pub isn't as good for ratings as 20 people watching in their homes?

I like that the round finishes Sunday night….did mind MNF when we werent playing but its like that round carries over into the next week.

The Fri 6pm slot is insane

Night time footy sucks

Hehe, I call bs on this. Murdoch and his cronies are running a little scared it seems. With what happened with the epl I think the nrl will now hold off a bit longer in finalising the remaining part of the deal.

6pm friday night games, anywhere in sydney metro, will be a nightmare to get to.
as usual though the broncos have there pre origin season mapped out for them with friday night seven day turnaround games. no doubt sowfscum (pride of the rugby league .. lmfao) and the rorters will have similar scheduling pet treatment.
would not surprise to see tigers get a few 6pm games at lo or cs so the low crowd numbers will give the push to relocate.
ratings is king and the bums on seats supporters can, as ms payne said, "get stuffed".

MNF is the pits, i really hope they get rid of it. 6pm Friday game is interesting to say the least.

the only good thing is no Monday night

Don't like Thursday night games at 8pm, probably too late for some to go to and too late for some at home to finish watching.

Friday at 6pm? yeah good luck with that one, not too bad for the TV watchers, but they could be looking at an empty stadium.

Firstly I don't think Friday 6pm will go ahead - it was a news limited idea and a poor one.

However their are limited locations/team where this could work and they are teams that are usually lower rating tv teams which works in well
- Warriors - Because 6pm Sydney time is 8pm NZ time
- Canberra - Having live their for 10 years previously it is easier to get too the ground, it isn't as cold at 6 as it is later which is important and majority finish early on a Friday anyway
- Storm - Because their ground is right in the centre of Melb and it gives them some seperation from AFL times
- Newcastle - This one isn't as effective as the others but again a one town team and easier to get to the location. But would only be against out of Sydney teams where you aren't getting travellers
- Gold Coast- Well because it can't get much worse and could be an option outside of daylight Savings for 1 or 2 a year of thier lower drawing games

Brisbane and Townsville wouldn't work, Most Sydney teams wouldn't work

In Sydney however thier is an option whereby you could play it at the SFS - so a Roosters home game against an out of Sydney team and encourage people to go early before they go home and before they go out but again against out of Sydney teams

As others have stated friday 6pm would have to be one of the most ridiculous decisions of all time. Many people would still be going home at that stage. i pity any club that gets this timeslot i am sure brisbane will get zero and clubs like raiders knights and us will get it regularly. The only club that would not be badly affected would be the warriors because of the time differential.

Would be excellent to see MNF get the axe - ridiculous.

Friday 6pm - they do realise peak hour in Sydney does not finish until 7pm.
So if it is Fox at 6 and 9 at 8pm - where does that leave the Broncos

Guess it is the Broncos every Friday night on 9 at 8pm. Good luck with that.

I don't have Fox and I won't be watching Brisbane every week that is for sure.

Thursday night is as bad as MNF. No Saturday games on FTA.

That leaves me with one game a week on Sunday. Sensational!!!!

These guys get a fortune to think all these stupid ideas up. No wonder the NRL is dragging it's heals.

I would be waiting for the draw to come out…..I hate to think Season Ticket holders would potentially have 3-4 games on a Friday night at 6pm, no value in it if you ask me.

spot on FT, buying memberships on the hopes of even getting 50% good games at lo or cs is getting more and more of a lottery judging on previous years match schedules.
makes renewing memberships very problematic.
