Random thoughts from first 4 rounds

I'm not sure how anyone can be critcial of Potter after 4 rounds. Sheens signed Anasta, Sheens signed Blair, Sheens signed ISofea. Sheens coached us to 10th last season with a stronger roster including Ryan, Heightington and Ellis.

Basically Sheens left us with an unbalanced roster. The worst roster we have had the close to a decade. Potter can't come in straight away make sweeping changes, otherwise you risk the senior players creating disharmony in the squad. No one had us in the top 8 this season because basically our team is average. Hopefully Potter over the course of the season will introduce some of the young talent and we see some performances which offer hope. He has had 4 props taken away from him early in the season so that is not ideal.

Sheens had 10 years, and 3 finals appearances. Lets at least give Potter 1-2 years before he start judging him a 4 out of 10.

Eddie that would be all well and good if we hadn't signed an ageing light weight backrower for 3 more years under Potter. Same with picking a player who has been poor in State Cup ahead of a young prop who performed admirably the week before.

I made my assessment on the first 4 rounds. I am not ruling out improvement and I accept your points. The loss of Big Red, Koro and the other young props has been a tough ask for Harry.

Pretty much spot on….. realistically the Squad is below par the madness of recruitment in the past is here for all to see. Shocked at the non existent structure why is Fulton being used as a battering ram all to many times! Reddy/Ashford to slow..Utai to small. Forwards are soft with no fear factor a pack full of second rowers madness. Farah/Marshall/Miller something to work with but will take time ,the Teddy V Moltzen situation has to be rectified quickly one or the other the other in reggies. Coach Potter has to by round 6 get it all together it's going to be tough for him even injuries have not helped , even his assistant coaches where forced upon him ..Simmons a bundle of knowledge that one! IMO this season will be Potters introductory to NRL as with a few talented boys, all in all the Sheens era has to be totalally removed from Concord at years end ...Players/coaches/conditioners then Coach Potter can move forward his way .

Any good side will put our pack at present under the pump, they dont have the size or the physical presence to hold these teams in defense or cause them any problems in attack.

Farah although trying his guts outs, seems to be taking a lot of dumb options,Marshall is a flat track specialist
and very seldom dominates against good sides, Miller like any young no7 is struggling. Combine this with four front rowers out of action and our best attacking player on the side lines, we have big problems

I thin mick potter is going to turn out to be as good as terry lamb was, we were much better last year under sheens, I know we wouldn't have been flogged like that in 2 games and we are going to get a shalacking next week in Melbourne on Thursday nights performance we are going to get walloped was contemplating on going up there on Thursday now im glad I didn't go

SC this is correct but the disappointing thing on Thursday was Manly gifted us field position in the first 25 mins and our impotent attack failed miserably to take advantage. We were extremely poor and it had nothing to do with a lack of go forward.

As I said in my original post, our attack has been abysmal this year. I appreciate we have been focusing on defence and reducing low percentage players, however my guess is that is not Marshall's natural game and telling him to go against his instincts is badly affecting his game.

Sheens' first few weeks at the club saw many lopsided losses as well

This time last year we'd won one game - luckily…didnt win till round 6

---------------

I think Marshall kicking on the first tackle of our first set isnt going against his insticts, flick passes and chips over the top im still seeing this early into the year

We are not the only team to have been held out by Manly....they have the best defence in the comp and have conceded 4 tries in 4 weeks.
Maybe its more about their defence rather than our attack

I posted somewhere last week we - at that stage, had the 2nd best attack after 3 rounds

One thing for certain, we are terrible mud runners.Have no idea how and what game to play in the wet.I see school boy teams with better game plans and application on wet tracks.

had a think about what you said; we'd won one game by round 6 this time last year, including losses to broncos at home, smashed by the dragons, raiders at cambo, and souths who weren't strong at that point of the season.

Far better start despite the injuries this year, we should definitely be in strong contention for the 8 in the back end of the season.

SC, you observe in your first paragraph that we are dominated in the forwards by the better sides, which I agree, we are regularly dominated by the better sides.

You then go on to criticize Benji because he "seldom dominates against the good sides..".

In my view, rather than this being a criticism of Benji, you actually pinpoint the reason that he is less effective against the top teams. Put him behind Melbourne of South's pack and you will then see dominant performance against the top teams.

Cheers

My random thought is that there are a few ex-Tigers that are playing OK in other teams.

Great point how good is Fifita going, releasing him was a great Sheenism.

releasing Fifita was the right choice… Paying overs for a massive ego was not what the Tigers needed back the or now with a new coach!

Just cannot have Fulton, Blair and Anasta starting in the backrow together. They all want to play wide which leaves an enormous workload on the frontrowers.

Can't believe people bagging the re-signing of Fulton. It's elsewhere changes need to be made. Fults does a heap of tackles and more importantly was a great attacking back rower. He has been forced into a defensive machine by the weakness of our packs over the years.

Our backline has become really slow over the last few years. We need some speed, but the question is where do we get it from?

I refuse to judge Potter on four rounds of footy.

What rubbish Watto, we got sucked into releasing him.

He clearly only needed proper man management, which we couldnt or wouldnt provide

We get stuck with a bludger like Blair who lost his Kiwi position since his move to us, and only regained it thru injury

Dunno why we couldnt have kept Woods Groat Fifita & Galloway….(I know the club state Gibbs & Fifita were realeased to retain these two) ....we then go on and Blair and later anast - madness ...this is one we definitely screwed up

My thoughts can be summed up in one word "Tethering". If the team including the coaching staff do not mould together positively very quickly WT are in trouble.

Its simple really… He wasnt worth $250k-$300k his manger was asking. [and he still isnt]

You cant complain the club paid overs for Blair [who at the time was the NZ VC] yet be happy for the club to pay massive overs for a young prop with a poor attitude?!

We definitely went backwards with regards to this recruitment. Fifita and Gibbs would be great for us now.

need more mongerl and aggro in the forwards.

would benefit greatly from a non compromising cranky player in the back line, someone like Jamie Lyon or Steve Matai. they would sure add some fire and starch.

plain and simple , wests-tigers are too nice. :unamused:

the opponents do not fear them for being a physical side.

waiting for the day that if opponents " turn it on", wests-tigers step up and send a clear message that if you want to "bring the biff" , be prepared to go home battered bruised and broken. :sunglasses:

His attitude seems fine now watto….maybe it wasnt so much him, more someone else that couldnt handle him, had to show him who's boss....whose ego forced him often to cut off his nose to spite his face to the detriment of the team.
The Sharks got it right, we got sucked in.
