The St George Illawarra Dragons have today confirmed they will support the NRL’s request to relocate the Round 24 home game against the Wests Tigers to the Sydney Cricket Ground in support of the 50th Anniversary of the 1963 Grand Final.
>
The 3pm kick-off on Saturday, August 24 is **50 years to the day and time** of the Dragons historic 8-3 victory over Wests in the 1963 Grand Final at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the scene of the famous “Gladiator” image with 1963 Captains Norm Provan and Arthur Summons that symbolises the game and is represented on the Telstra Premiership Trophy.
>
This seasons Round 24 clash was originally scheduled for WIN Jubilee Oval in Kogarah but upon request from the NRL and strong interest from TV Broadcaster, Fox Sports, the Dragons agreed to relocate the 3pm home game on Saturday, August 24 to the Sydney Cricket Ground to support the initiative and planned 50th Anniversary celebrations.
>
NRL CEO, Mr Dave Smith, said the Round 24 SCG clash would feature a spectacular tribute to one of the game’s most revered moments.
>
“This match will be a fantastic celebration for the whole game and one that every Rugby League fan will be invited to share in,” said Smith.
>
“The Gladiators image is such a special symbol of our game and to be able to mark that moment in our history exactly 50 years to the day at the same venue will be a wonderful event.
>
“I would especially like to thank the Dragons for allowing us to move this game to the SCG so we can provide a fitting tribute to this iconic moment in the game’s history.”
>
Dragons Chief Operating Officer Michael McDonald said: “The 50th Anniversary of the 1963 Grand Final is significant and the opportunity to have the Dragons playing Wests Tigers on the same day, time and venue with all three grades is unique and something that the NRL are keen to appropriately celebrate.
>
“Relocating games from our traditional venues is not something the Dragons Board takes lightly and in considering all the circumstances and the opportunities around this marquee game, relocating to the SCG for this match was in the best interests of the Dragons and the game as a whole.
>
“We are working closely with the NRL and SCG Trust to ensure that our Red V Members and Partners who will be impacted by this change have their benefits transferred appropriately and we will communicate accordingly as soon as possible."

Wasn't the other dragons game to commemorate that game? Ah well, is rather go to SCG…

There should have been better planning of this. Dragons fans not happy about the move now they are robbed of a game at WIN Jubilee.

Honestly, the NRL and club should have seen that the Round 24 match fell on that weekend and planned it for then. This is just part 2 to what we did earlier this year.

As a result, looks like I'll be watching live on Fox since the SCG is a rubbish ground to watch football at

Three cheers for the St.George board …. they seem to work together in the right spirit.

It was basically a takeover by the Dragons of the Steelers though wasn't it? I would highly doubt that there would be any remnants of the Illawarra Steelers club to be found in the merged entity TBH. Just the token "Illawarra" in their name and playing some games in Wollongong.

At least WT made an effort to try and be an even split between Wests and Balmain.

Good to see a 3pm saturday game at SCG

Expect to see WT in regular strip as NRL now allows for only one match per heritage jersey per year for all NRL clubs

I guess its almost another bonus home game for WT also.

Looks like it will be Fox for me.
Was looking forward to the game but not at the SCG.
Sydney CRICKET Ground…worst venue for Rugby League.

Go Tigers!!!

We haven't had the best record at the SCG, hope we can turn that around. Also injuries could be a problem, very hard surface.

Wests Tigers SCG Games:

Round 6, 2013: Wests Tigers 12 Dragons 13
Round 10, 2010: Wests Tigers 10 Rabbitohs 50
Round 10, 2009: Wests Tigers 22 Rabbitohs 23
Round 6, 2008: Wests Tigers 30 Rabbitohs 10

Was looking forward to all threew grades on a Saturday afternoon.

Then I realised we are not playing the Cutters in NSW Cup that week. This coupled with the SCG viewing angles will mean I am at Campbelltown for the WT NSW Cup fixture being played at the exact same time

I think the Dragons should be applauded for sacrificing a home game to commemrate the 50th year to the day of this:

I was born 2 months after this, a historic occasion for the game, hopefully Im still around for the 100th… 😕

Ive seen the dragons in the steelers jumper at least twice this year, maybe more.

And while its not a heritage jumper, Penrith have worn that orrible pink strip half doz times now

Our Magpie ones have probably been auuctioned off anyway and likely too late to get another run of jerseys printed in time

SCG is a terrible venue to watch rugby league.

I may be on my own with this comment but I am so so so sick of all the heritage games, flash backs, jerseys etc. it does not change the appeal / pull of the game for me at all.

Happy that St George have effectively given up a home game for it. Makes us even for the year.

Cricket fields are for cricket. Going to the cricket is about beers - and glancing occasionally at a ball or two. It is a relaxing day in the sun talking crap with mates.

League fields need to be intense. They are made intense by grandstands where you need someone to belay you as you climb to your seat. The closer you are to the game the more you feel the hits, the tackle busts and the passion of the players.
