At the start of the season, even though we were winning the results didn't matter. Our guys were working hard for each other, and everyone was putting in. Even if we were scraping 78th minute wins the performances were acceptable. That's long gone now and we are reverting to the mediocrity of the previous 5 seasons. I don't think we can make the finals, we probably don't have the talent, but if we can find that steel again then this season can go down as a success, and if we build on it in 2019 that can be a success too.
If our performances were very stellar at the start of the season, can you or anybody else tell me why we have gone backwards so quickly these last few weeks..??
To be fair we were all behind the team and Ivan was an inspiration getting our team to beat Storm and Chooks early…the loss to Broncos still leaves a bad taste in my mouth...but they were going well..I will agree that the team lacks talented players in key roles such as a potent second rower and centre...the DH may now be fixed and with Mbye at the back with Grub back at 5/8 things just may improve in the next few weeks..I dont know the answer ...bar an influx of money and another roster cleanout...
I think we are too concerned with our attack.
We have gone back to panicking and trying to pull a play out of our bum.
Titans were all over us from the 2nd set. We had one good defensive set first up. From then on it was the Titans.
Every player was bending the first man in defence, finding their front and quickly playing the ball. We were very lucky to get those tries. Absolute run always with no possession. But then once the grind was needed we dropped our handle.
Mbye was good, but our defencive positioning on our goal line was terrible. Partly the individuals are to blame for having no clue of where to stand, but part of that falls on the fullback to organise that line.
I’d say Ivan would of picked up on that and being an unknown at fullback prior to the start of this season, Ivan, Hodgson and Mbye can still build of that.
Ryan James’ first try was appalling and an example of above.
We can turn it around but it will take work. Maybe with the pressure of making the finals removed we can get back to being able to find a game style with a balance in attack and defence that works for us.
1) Ivan, pick a fit team, no players with niggles, if Packer, Matolino and McQueen can’t make an impact and play longer than 30 minutes in first grade without sucking in the big ones. Rest them until they are ready. Packer looks like he needs to regain his match fitness. Hopefully the bye will help.
2) Hit and stick. Use those shoulders, hurt the opposition. Get aggressive.
We have lacked that especially from our front row pretty much since the Melbourne game!
3) Build pressure. We have gone away from setting up plays to allow for a grubber into the line.
4) Teach our halves the low / mid cross field Kick. Every other team has this at it’s disposal. I’m starting to think Brooks can only kick along the ground or straight into the air.
5) Time to Blood Garner. Bring him in. Straight into right 2nd row. There is no better option so no time like the present. We had McQueen start and play 30mins in total. What’s up with that?
6) Benji slots back into 5/8\. Reynolds to Supersub.
