Recruitment and Retention

It's obvious we have a ton of great juniors coming through and we seem to have had a good stack over the years, but my question is how many really great players besides Ellis have we recruited since 05 and who have we let go that we shouldn't have.

Injuries aside, why do we seem to pickup 50 thousand players in the same positions, when it might be a good idea to stock up on big boppers in the front row for a change..

From the original advertisement back in 2005 when we appointed Warren McDonnell.

"Wests Tigers are looking to appoint a Recruitment Manager to identify and attract talented elite players to our Club.

We seek a person with high energy levels who is proactive and has a positive attitude when it comes to meeting challenges and achieving targets set. Reporting directly to the Head Coach, you will provide assistance in the development of a player Recruitment/Retention Program that will target elite players.

Key responsibilities include:• Implementing the Recruitment/Retention Program within the designated NRL area, district clubs and junior teams.• Managing specific strategic elite player acquisitions specified by the Head Coach.• Providing status reports to the Head Coach on player recruitment/retention activities and deciding on new acquisitions at an elite level.• Building and continuously developing a network of contacts that will inform and guide recruitment activities."

Thanks Warren your assistance in player Recruitment/Retention is easily the worst of any club in the NRL.
We are running last and look stuck on last thanks to you and your over 30 policy.

Warren you have gone under the radar for too long..you had no qualifications to be a Recruitment Manager..another job for the boys.
Time to hand in your glasses and take your number 1 new acquisition at an elite level….Blair with you.

With Humphreys a temporary CEO for the next two months who is going to sack the Recruitment Manager? In fact what of any consequence, new player/coach wise is going to happen over these next two months? Really good management Wests Tigers!

Actually ad quite clearly points out that the head coach who they report to maes these decisions on elite players with warrens assistance. Any head coach who let his recruitment manager pick elite players isn't worth his pay check and sheens defiantly would have picked the elite players. He has done a great job in getting juniors to our club and keeping juniors at our club.

This idiot should've been axed a long time ago and should not be allowed to make any more decisions as far as signing for the rest of the year.

I think it comes down to two areas _ senior recruiting and junior recruiting.

I hear a lot about who strong a junior base the Wests area is and we have some great young talent coming from that area including the likes of Tedesco and Nofo. Wests were strong in the Under 16's and this area if managed right should always be likely to produce fine young talent.

The Balmain junior recruitment has been amazing considering what a small junior area they have to pick from. I realise that they bring some players in from other areas but the last two years the Balmain under 18s have been very strong. The likes of Woods, Moses and Brooks look very good. You would have to say whoever is in charge of the Balmain junior recruitment and development is doing a very good job.

Overall given our success in the junior ages and the 20's I think junior recruitment is pretty good across the board at our club. I am sure there are many people that work tirelessly to make this happen.

Senior recruitment has been poor for many years. Apart from Ellis I can't think of a top player we have brought in the past 5 years. You probably have to go back to when Galloway, Hodgsen and Prince were brought to the club to find other good senior recruits.

It depends who is in charge of senior recruitment, if it was Tim Sheens alone ( I tend to think it was) then the buck stops with him as it has been woeful in recent years including this year. If Warren Mcdonald is not involved in senior recruitment do we need him or is he behind the successful junior recruitment. I think that his position will depend on what he currently does but if it is senior recruitment he should be shown the door.

Retention is hard to comment on without knowing all the facts. Fafita and Ryan seem puzzling loses but we don't know the full reasons. They let Ellis go back home on family reasons. I think there is much more to the letting of Gibbs go they we know. Chris H whilst serving the club well was not an impact back rower and I agree with him going just the replacements brought (Thompson and Eddie P have been far worse).

I think we need to overall the whole senior recruitment and retention are of our club. Maybe we should poach Peter O'Sullivan he has been great and the storm and chooks. I can't see him coming to us. We need to find our own head guy like him and put the programs in place to make it successful. I still think we will always rely more on junior development than buying big name stars. That is actually a good way for a club to be run it does however need to buy the right key senior players to complement and help develop the good junior base.

O'Sullivan will go for top dollar , lets pay Sheens out and get rid of that monkey on our back first before we put the club into more debt

I'd say the reason players won't come to the Tigers is Benji as Smeg said in another thread

Many players are used to having set roles ,not playong off the top of their heads

Players prefer stability ,and knowing their home ground well , not having three they have to worry about

I think Mcdonnell only recruits the juniors, but i could be wrong.

And we do have one of the best Junior rosters in the league. On this basis, I don't get where McDonnells criticism comes from. I don't have an opinion of the guy as he is pretty much out of the spotlight. I see the First Grade signings as Sheens problem.

Look at Manlys lower grades and it is the opposite. They have always been poor in state cup and 20's. but their first grade is always impressive. I think it has to do with their relationship with Queensland cup which is questionably the strongest junior league in the country.

Can't you read ?

I posted his job description from 2005

"Providing status reports to the Head Coach on player recruitment/retention activities and deciding on new acquisitions at an elite level.•"

That was in 2005 No doubt he has a lot more involvement Now.

His the same as the Recruitment Managers at Souths, Roosters, Canterbury….. except they are professionals.

He is the reason we are in this mess.
