Recruitment in our key positions for all clubs 2014

So everyone knows that we lack experienced props. Our outside backs stocks are low because of injuries/age/releases so we need some there as well. So far we have made one signing, Pat Richards, which I think is a decent signing.

So far here are the players that have moved to other clubs or re-signed for next season ergo were apparently on the market, that play in positions most agree we need to recruit for.

Outside Backs:
Corey Norman (Parramatta)
Jack Reed (Re-signed)
Jarrod Croker (Re-signed)
Paul Vaughan (Re-signed)
David Klemmer (Re-signed)
Aiden Tolman (Re-signed)
Brent Kite (Penrith)
Will Chambers (Re-signed)
James McManus (Re-signed)
Aku Uate (Re-signed)
Kane Linnett (Re-signed)
Matt Scott (Re-signed)
Jarryd Hayne (Re-signed)
Jacob Loko (Re-signed)
Josh Mansour (Re-signed)
Dylan Farrell (Saints)
Luke Burgess (Re-signed)
Daniel Tupou (Re-signed)

When you consider that most of these players were never really going to leave their clubs we haven't missed out on much. As for the ones that moved the only one that I think we could have gotten usage out of was Brent Kite and it's a shame we didn't snag him but from all reports we tried. It's probably a reflection of the bloke that he actually went to a side that has a LOT of good front rowers to help his workload rather than a place where he'd be expected to pull hhis weight. Norman looks really good now but earlier this year and in years past he's been ordinary and Dylan Farrell isn't that big of a signing and the Saints are probably in need of a guy like him more than we are. So we've really missed out on nothing.

We have some very talented backrowers coming through but I would suggest that a good solid first grade backrower would be an equally important signing but for whatever reason all the talk is of props. If you look at backrower signings we've missed out on a fair bit more but still nothing to hang ourselves over.

I guess our recruitment department has looked at the available talent so far and has looked at our own depth and juniors and seen better in house, and I can't really fault them for that. It might be lean for now but with our depth we'll improve.

As for players left on the market, there are LOADS and we personally have a lot off contract. The Roosters alone have a hell of a lot of great young front row talent unsigned for 2014 and if we aren't sniffing around there we're mad. Dylan Napa, Isaac Liu and Josh Aioloumai would all be great signings. The Panthers have some alright talent in our key recruitment positions too. A guy like Travis Robinson would be a handy acquisition as would Dayne Weston. I wouldn't be upset to sign Nigel Plum either, heaven knows we need some good defence.

Mac My first call would be giving some of these fringe players (once we are out of semi contention) a run

Brooks, Mr T ,Nofoaluma,Santi , Lovett ,Nathan Brown ,Rory Brien

We can't make a call on the future until we know what we exactly need in the future

If two or three of these blokes stand up , we may need few players , but unless we trial them we will never know and then also risk losing them

Well, I think we are doing exactly that happy. Big T, Brooks and Brien are all playing reserve grade right now which is a good test for the physicality of NRL. Gives a much better indication than NYC. Hopefully Brien and Big T get the call up to 1st grade some time this year and get 3-4 games to see how they go. We can look at promoting Nofo, Santi and Lovett to NSW Cup at the end of the year in prep for 2014 too.

Yes and No pHyR3 If you pick Simona , you give him 80 minutes to proof himself , not 20 when the game is well and truly lost

And if Potter makes a call he should stick with it for at least some period of time ,I think Potters job is safe for at least two years while Sheens is still being paid out , we can't afford to be paying 2 coaches off

So he needs to be patient ,tell the board this will take time to fix and he will need to try some things from time to time

It's about the club carrying out the following process;

(i) Finding which FG positions the club needs to recruit for.
(ii) Finding which players currently with other clubs are available for recruitment into these positions.
(iii) Determining which of its current players it will let go for 2014.
(iv) Knowing how much money the club has available to recruit available players for the positions which require filling.

Once the above process has been followed the club can begin negotiating with players it would like to recruit.
Like any commodity in short supply but with a high demand for it the sooner the process is completed and negotiations begun the better the chance of the club buying the best available quality players for the required positions. Of course if the club has very little or no money available to recruit players there is little point in following the process. This point is certainly the most important as far as the outlook for 2014 recruitment is concerned.

Sorry Newtown , but you would alienate half of your juniors at the club without even giving them a shot , not knowing if they can or can't cut it at top level ??

Simple. 1 x Big Bad Ass Prop, 1-2 Big, Fast Exciting Centres…......Applications to Wests Tigers Office.......... Thankyou for your time!

Happy if, like I said in another thread, Potter has the intestinal fortitude to promote these juniors above the experienced slackers we have the rest of 2013 to find out whether these juniors can or cannot cut it at top level.

Dayne Weston has signed with the storm effective immediately, another one lost.

I agree with everything you have said but from what we are hearing with all this second tier salary cap, I dont think we will see it.

We need some hard nosed players. At full strength we still lack aggression in the forwards and speed out wide. Players I would be looking at are Tapau, Asotasi (1 year only), Kennedy, Junior Sau, Joel Monaghan.

Given our struggles in the front row, why were we not all over this? :crazy

This frustrates me, knowing that Weston will probably do a world of good for Melbourne.

There's obviously underlying issues within our recruitment process, missing out on so many players. OP said the ones we missed out on weren't such a big deal and I agree but **WE KNOW** that we need props and centres, why aren't we doing everything in our power to secure anyone that is looking around.

normally when i see someone suggesting we sign some one playing reserve grade at another club i think it is ridiculous, weston is the exception, i cant believe he is not playing NRL, i thought he was excellent last years and thought he went every bit as well as Grant and McKendry (both of which I rate highly as Im sure most would)
