Rename Margaret Court Arena?

Sorry I can't agree. Margaret Court is entitled to her views and to express them. We may not agree to everything she says but attempting to link the renaming of the Arena to the issue smacks of bullying. This is Australia after all.

No because she is entitled to an opinion…no matter how crazy it is. She has formed an opinion and its not popular but that does not mean that those who disagree with said opinion should be able to punish her in this way for it. If she came out and said 'I dont want the gays playing in my arena' then the conversation changes.

Her having an opinion and her having an Arena named after her are two separate things. Rolf Harris is entitled to his opinion, but has naturally lost his Knighthood because of his conduct. Likewise if say Grant Hackett (to pull a name from the hat) became a Neo Nazi and started shouting Nazi propaganda, we could see a stadium renamed easily. You can have your views, even socially uncomfortable views. However if they are repulsive I see no reason why society should promote your name.

In Margaret's case, that is probably a step too far now. The "Margaret Court Lesbian tennis Tournament" would be the most apt response in my book.

Disagree. Rolf Harris is a convicted criminal so it's hardly a fair comparison. It is not a crime to hold a view that some don't agree with (but there's likely many who do agree - not me btw).

As for Grant Hackett, he couldn't possibly become less likeable.

I think its sad in this day and age that society is so weak that whenever you criticize someone's opinion they have a cry and think you are telling them they have no right to the opinion. No, they do, but when you put an opinion out there, its open to criticism. Suck it up. That goes for whether its an opinion on footy or gay marriage. Society needs to harden up.

They should not have to tolerate her, so arrogant and hurtful. If she can boycott Qantas then her detesters boycott Margaret Court Arena even if she does not own it?

I don't agree with what she is saying in any way shape or form but this is a democratic country where views can be expressed. I wish I could shut Alan Jones up but he is entitled like me and to have a say :stuck_out_tongue:

And why do we need to pander to players from other countries and other era's as to what we do. Murray and Navratilova should keep their views to them selves in relation to what Australia does in its sporting arena. They can say want they want but don't threaten boycotts and demand names changes. If players don't like it they don't have to play in Australia. They are welcome to come and play but don't criticise the way we run our country. Court was an exemplary player with zero on court antics unlike Murray and some of the other current crop of wannabe's. Geez sorry about the rant but I hate outsiders telling us what to do :angry:

Margaret court was named so because of her ability, not because she is a spokesperson for Australian values.

She probably shouldn't be asked for her opinion on anything, or nor should she be a role model for our youth.

However if you took away honours and rewards that people have received due to idiotic thoughts and statements, there wouldn't be any sporting heroes left to admire their talents.

On a personal note, I prefer stadiums named after the sporting elite that played there not some corporate sponsor.

She's stuck in the 1920s like a few on here… She's entitled to her views no matter how outdated but renaming the Stadium shouldn't occur, that came about due to her deeds on court

She isnt stuck in the 20's at all. If you read what she has said she is very up to date. Her views however come from a very insular and priveledged perspective…like a few on here. If she lived in communities where the people whose lifestyle's she criticises exist, her views would cease to be so black and white....like a few on here.

Her views wouldn't change at all given where they come from. Her head would probably explode from all the judging she would walk around doing though…

Good on her for speaking out, she has the right to give her opinions about marriage. Being able to have a say if you don't agree with gay unions being called "marriage " is a right of the australian people and we need to have a vote on it and not depend on politicians these day who rarely get right what the people want.
