Renovating Leichhardt Oval

Firstly some of my best memories are of watching the footy on the hill, but I'm amazed that there hasn't been any major improvements done or any being proposed for in the future that I know about.I was looking at some of the old photo's of our grounds in another thread today & was thinking that it hasn't really changed that much since 74.It's an awesome sight seeing a massive sea of orange, black & white around the ground but something as simple as getting something to eat, drink or going the toilet can be a nightmare.I think the only two grounds that haven't had any major improvements are us & brookvale, but at least they are lobbying or you hear about them trying to get funding from state & federal government. If we were able to increase the capacity by 5,000 - 7,500 I would like to think we could go back to playing all our home games at Leichhardt & Campbletown & not being so finiacally dependent on giving up four home games.I didn't forget the parking issues, but im not sure you will ever fix that.Lastly congrat's to Willow on becomming a dad & welcome to the club.

Its had a lot of work done recently (last few years)
Near corporate area up top.
Renovated old stand
demolished other termite stand
new perimeter fencing
New entry Mary st

needs much more, there was lots proposed but dunno where thats at

Only think I would like them to invest money in is the PA system. Other then that I don't really care what they do as I love standing on the hill

With greens in power in council and local state member, its unlikely to get much local gov support for renovations

Securing funding for any upgrades is obviously the main concern, and biggest hurdle. In order to increase the ground capacity, develop new toilets, amenities etc, well the existing grandstand would need to come down and a new one built. I think a lot of people would like to see Leichhardt modernised somewhat, but the cold hard reality is to secure the cash needed to do so is the main impediment holding Leichhardt back and I think this will continue to be the case for many years to come.

What about selling the naming rights of the ground surely this would be worth enough to invest a couple of hundred thousand dollars a year into the ground?

Personally I think it needs a couple of fairly inexpensive improvements - plastic seating all the way around the concourse area, two or three concrete stairs/access ramps down the hill so that in the wet we don't have people slipping over.

Remove the toilets at the northern end and replace them with seats.

New toilets at that end of the ground.

The PA system needs an overhaul too.

And perhaps a digital scoreboard at some stage.

It doesn't need millions spent on it just a few more basic improvements and of course soap dispensers (sorry couldn't help myself🙂)

Thanks for the info & opinion's.I just hope by the time my kids a teenager,it's had more work done to it than when I was growing up.Can't remember the last time I've been so excited about our chances of winning the comp.

I couldn't handle Leichhardt being known as MKB stadium or Hyundai Oval, or CSS for that matter. It'd near on kill me. This is why we play at the SFS.

I agree with just about everything else though, even though most of my childhood memories involved the crappy amenities!

Come on Harry, help us out mate! Surely he has some favours to call in from some mates…

Why would anyone pump money into a ground they nor the club own. It will end up like Harold park with it's vicinity it's worth a fortune to council.

I was kidding Ed… I know it's a pipe dream.

However, it would be nice to see one of the oldest grounds in the NRL get a bit of a facelift to ensure it stays in the WT plans. We've played there 50 times for 32 wins, 1 draw and 17 losses. Only in 2003 did we lose more games than we won in a season there.

I love it there, its the best suburban ground in the comp. There is no doubt the toilets need upgrading and such , but maybe they could put proper seats in the areas where there's the wooden planks.. (they have it around the 50m line but for some reason they didn't do it all over)

The ground in its current layout meets the needs of the club. The question is will it still meet the needs of the club in 10-15 years time. Can we still play at the ground if we have 20,000+ members? The same applies to Campbelltown.

We are not there yet, but eventually we will outgrow these suburban grounds. Sad, but if it does happen, it means our club is successful. The two grounds will have to increase capacity to 30,000 or we will play all home games at SFS/ANZ.

I have known Ed for the best part of 40 years and we have rarely agreed anything, but I do agree with him here. The land is worth a fortune and will only continue to appreciate.

My favourite ground in the NRL… Sadely though, I highly doubt any level of government will invest much more into the place other than 'make-up'.

As the Wests Tigers grow, the day will come when we can no longer play there. This will be a sad day for many, but the future lies in the bigger stadiums.

I was devastated the day they pulled down the Frank Burke Stand at the old Lang Park. The place is still a great sporting stadium, but it is no longer Lang Park. The day will come when this will happen to LO... :frowning:

How can you say that about Lang Park It is still the Cauldron and when I'm watching a game I don't even think about that it has changed apart from the old scoreboard missing

There is no reason you couldn't play games against interstate teams at Leichardt but playing local derbies in the future would be totally lacking in logic to play at Leichardt

I love going to Leichhardt Oval & i think its great when we get a crowd there, but i must say i agree with Ed the land is worth a motza & will only increase in value & i can see one of these Governments selling it off for development one day..

It won't be sold for a VERY long time. Remember the Callagn Park fiasco? This will be in the too hard basket for a long time. Really it is just a small grandstand (at the water end) and a few facility upgrages away from being a top notch boutique stadium but that would still cost significant $$ and I don't see it happening anytime soon.
