Here is an idea of how we can showcase the rep season, ensure NZ rugby league gets some $$$, increase the amount of rugby league product available to the broadcasters (increase $$$ from broadcast rights) and presevere the standard of product offered…..or you might think it is just a load of crap.
1\. Suspend the NRL and NYC comps mid-season for 6 weeks
2\. Get rid of city/country
3\. Get rid of the Anzac test
4\. Have a 6 week rep season comprising a state of origin type series but expanded to include NZ or a Rest of the World team.
5\. Have a mid-season League Cup type competition involving non-rep players that also showcases the best of the NYC . Each team must have at least 10 players eligible for the NYC. Games to be played at suburban/regional grounds.
The advantages of this is that it will ease the work load on the players, but increases revenue and does not necessitate any increase in the player roster (keeps costs down) . It also adds an element of excitement mid-season when the NRL usually goes flat.
The chance to play in the Rest of the World team might entice more northern hemisphere players to come play and test themselves against the best of the best.
The season may need to be extended a couple of weeks either end, but i reckon you could cut some of the trial games and start in early March.
Any thoughts?
