Rep Season Idea

Here is an idea of how we can showcase the rep season, ensure NZ rugby league gets some $$$, increase the amount of rugby league product available to the broadcasters (increase $$$ from broadcast rights) and presevere the standard of product offered…..or you might think it is just a load of crap.

1\. Suspend the NRL and NYC comps mid-season for 6 weeks
2\. Get rid of city/country
3\. Get rid of the Anzac test
4\. Have a 6 week rep season comprising a state of origin type series but expanded to include NZ or a Rest of the World team.
5\. Have a mid-season League Cup type competition involving non-rep players that also showcases the best of the NYC . Each team must have at least 10 players eligible for the NYC. Games to be played at suburban/regional grounds.

The advantages of this is that it will ease the work load on the players, but increases revenue and does not necessitate any increase in the player roster (keeps costs down) . It also adds an element of excitement mid-season when the NRL usually goes flat.

The chance to play in the Rest of the World team might entice more northern hemisphere players to come play and test themselves against the best of the best.

The season may need to be extended a couple of weeks either end, but i reckon you could cut some of the trial games and start in early March.

Any thoughts?

SOO is the show piece event and is owned by the 2 State Bodies… I dont mind changing the timing of these games, but leave NZ out of it... They can play Test Matches at the end of the year!

I'd say have a 2 week break in the comp, and play Origin on a Friday Night, Wednesday Night then the following Sunday. On the Saturday & Sunday after the first Origin, play some form of Knock-out Comp followed with the Final the Following Saturday... Hybrid / 10's / Origin of Region, I dont know, but I like the idea of mixing the 20's with the older boys in some format...

Novel idea, but not sure if clubs or the nrl would be comfortable with under 20's playing with first graders. Injury risk would be high.

Like the idea of mid season cup though.

Not a bad idea but I don't like the World Team and Nz involved in Origin.. I'm all for the Nz players playing for the Blues or Maroons if they change the rules though.

Great Idea you could split the New Zealanders up into North and South as well for SOO and have 1 Saturday and 1 Sunday game and a under 20 SOO game as well . Run it over 4 weeks Final (last week ) .

Rep Season
Pre Weekend - NSW and QLD pick a squad of 25, if your selected you cannot play anygames in the NRL Mid Season Cup.
1st Weekend - Week 1 of NRL Mid Season Cup Begins (MSCup) - Clubs get rankings which are taken from the ladder of NRL - So 1 v 16, 2 v 15 etc - or even first games have rivalries, So Manly v Parra etc. Teams should have special jerseys for the cup aswell.

2nd Weekend - SOO 1, NRL MSCup Continues Week 2 - 8 Teams left

3rd Weekend - SOO 2, NRL MSCup Continues Week 3 - 4 Teams left - Double Header on the Friday for both MSCup games both to be played at the same city as origin. I.e If Origins in Sydney play at SFS ( doubt they would get 90 000, but you never know. If Origins in Brisbane play at Suncorp…

4th Weekend - SOO 3, NRL Mid Season Cup Final - Both Games to be played in the same city.

5th Weekend - Not Sure, Indigenous V Maori? All Star Night - Kicking Comp, Fastest Man In Rugby League, Skills, Strongest Man? Held At Acer Arena?

6th Weekend - Australia v New Zealand...

Divide the comp into 2 conferences ( use the odd number placed teams from previous year 1.3.5.etc for one conference and then the even numbered placed teams for the other)
This would allow home and away series for each conference and one game against the teams in other conference .
This would mean a total of 22 games therefore leaving 4 weeks for representative fixtures to stand alone
The top four teams from each conference will playoff for position in grand final
This system has the capacity for expansion when more teams are included in comp

Still like to see a mid season transfer window while this is going on . Would really change the comp for teams who lost big names through injury .

I think a mid season transfer could make things interesting it goes for six weeks .. Clubs would transfer players with players directly…

I don't see the NRL shutting down for 6 weeks for a meaningless competition. People won't go to games unless its the proper thing and TV isn't interested. It would be music to the AFL's ears.

Personally I have no problem with things as they are now re SOO but I agree with ditching City/Country. I'd also like to see NSW and QLD be able to select say 2 non-Aust players each (once you picked a state you'd be stuck playing for them). Also players who are available for and play for developing league national teams should attract a salary cap discount. It's the only way to stop this drain of players from Pacific teams to Australia.

But if you could turn it into a comp similiar to the FA Cup where say group teams and Qld cup sides played the big boys at home over 4 quarters of rugby league (4 quarters helps keep the games close) It creates the David v Goliath affect . That would be interesting and people would watch (Well I would anyway) Hoping to see a big club get knocked over by a minnow .

To be honest I would watch too! But sadly I don't see Joe Public wanting to see St George 2nd or 3rd XIII (you can bet anyone half decent will get rested) playing Group 3 in numbers big enough to make it worthwhile. The other issue is shutting down the NRL to run it. If it was like the old-style midweek cup it may work but say you're a young kid who is a Panthers fan. You get a taste for watching Penrith and then for 6 weeks your club stops playing and all you have as a filler are away games in the bush where most of the players you know aren't playing. He'd probably end up going to watch BWS Giants play instead.

Anyway these ideas are great for league tragics like us but the game has to think about the other people who watch too!
