Ricky's secret Origin summit

RICKY STUART yesterday took the first step towards dismantling Queensland's five-year stranglehold on State of Origin when he held a secret meeting with seven of the state's biggest stars.

Locked away in a room at Cronulla's Rydges Hotel for three hours, Stuart unveiled his plan to restore state pride.

He addressed senior NSW players Paul Gallen, Kurt Gidley, Greg Bird, Luke Lewis, Jarryd Hayne and Mitchell Pearce and his backroom staff in his first major assignment as new NSW coach.

"I think we got a fair bit out of it," Bird said. "Everyone gave their opinions on what needs to improve and what they think can be done better. The main thing was to promote a bit of stability, which is probably something we have been lacking.

"Knowing Sticky and what he is about, he is definitely capable of achieving it. He will go away and work on some things after hearing what we all had to say."

In the first indication that he is poised to win a place in Stuart's new-look side, Dally M medal winner Todd Carney was also at the extraordinary meeting.

Players were invited to take ownership of the team and create a culture to match the passion of the all-conquering Maroons.

"It is good to catch up with Ricky and the boys and begin thinking about what we need to do," Gidley said. "It has been a few years since Ricky has been here and he is very excited about the role, as are we. This is where it all begins."

Unveiling his coaching and management team for the very first time, Stuart sat across from former Sharks playmaker Trent Barrett, trainer Ronnie Palmer and football manager Craig Young.

In his opening address, Stuart told the players he wanted to create a stable environment that would provide the platform to topple Mal Meninga and the Maroons.

"All of the guys here have played Origin before with the exception of Carney," Gidley said.

"So it is a good idea to get us all together and have a bit if a chat about what happened last year and also the future."

During the star-studded State of Origin conference, Stuart invited the players to put forward ideas and thoughts on how to improve the side and also the culture.

"There are some things that we can do better, and that's what this has all been about," Gidley said.

"There are some things we can do within the camps and with preparation that will help us improve. Mostly it was about catching up and bouncing around some ideas from the players and from Sticky."

Gidley applauded the NSWRL's move to employ a full-time coach.

"We had a bit of a chat about it and I think it takes a bit of pressure off him because he doesn't need to go back to his club team," Gidley said.

Gidley also backed Stuart to help NSW win back the coveted State of Origin trophy, last won by a Stuart- coached side in 2005.

"For sure," Gidley said. "It is a big possibility and we will go into the series with a lot of confidence."

After the meeting, Stuart took the players out on Port Hacking for a low-key bonding session.

So we can assume Gidley will be playing then, capt from the bench again? Also that regardless of form all other players here will be picked. Same old NSW

More Gidley led NSW failure next year. Coupled with plenty of dumb penalties from Gallan and Bird nice start Ricky. Queenslander! 6 in a row!

Yep, have to agree. Except for the Queenslander bit TSS.

While I think trying to build a culture similar to QLD's is a good idea, it's the type of players that Stuart is using that causes the most concern. Gallen and Bird are just dumb thugs (please don't let them read this) and as for having the captain of a rugby league origin side starting from the bench….hello!!!!

It looks like the same old same old this year.....just with a bit more togetherness. :brick:

Sticky…showing his hand here...same ole same ole...what happened to a fresh start...even Barrett made the "new look team"...If Sticky picks Ennis all I can say is Go Queensland!!

i dont think trying to "match the passion" of the maroons is the right way to go. There's no point trying to out-queensland the queenslanders. the blues need to be clinical and professional and borrow from the winning culture of some of their club sides, like not the sharks, eels and knights.

I'd have no dramas with Gallen being captain, apart from Luke Lewis, he is head and shoulders above any backrower available for the Blues. Sure he gives away a few dumb penalties, but he offers so much more than all the backrowers that NSW have picked over the past 5 series.

If all the players in that meeting are picked, then that's a good start, I just hope they find the right role for Gidley, he did have a great Origin 3 last year coming off the bench into hooker. They really shot themselves in the foot making him captain 2 years ago, although I think they only wanted him to be the captain for one series then replace him with Farah after Robbie got a series under his belt, but Farah didn't step up that year.

100% deejaii… NSW need to stop trying to be what Qld are. Its simply not there go.

They need to go back to the year 2000 and ask what worked back then. This was your best ever series and it had nothing to do "passion" or "pride". They were better Athletes and clinical in thier Application. Dont get confused with the hysteria in 2004/5, when Andrew Johns dismantled Queensland. In 2000, that was your best and is what wins NSW Origin games....

Farah will be the 9 or 14!!!

I concur. Don't gift Queensland opportunities like we have been the past few series. That will go a long way to NSW winning a series. Luke Lewis to play lock, 80 minutes and captain.

The season hasn't even started, and I'm depressed about origin already!

Robbie better get picked at hooker! Hope they don't go with Dean Young! :brick:

geez 3 hours in a hotel room with those blokes …. must have been riveting stuff

way to go painting yourself into a corner if any of these blokes have ordinary starts to the season and don't deserve their spots .

Heh heh heh…gotta love them blues..if his plans dont include Robbie, your gone again.

I know..I stopped at the title…Secret summit...pmsl..

We are gone ....6 nil .....i concede now...HAPPY WATTO...

I just don't get how they got this guy as coach. I think Daley would have been better and I think Daley is pretty ordinary.

Why NSW persist with Gidley I will never know. Apart from coming off the bench at hooker and having an impact, he's done bugger all in Origin and has gifted Qld a couple of tries over the last couple of years. It's no secret that Stuart also likes boring, grinding game plans and if that's how he thinks NSW will win, then he's handing them their 6th series win in a row.

I dont think were out of it at all in 2011.

Muddled selection is what didn't give us a chance last year.

They're still better than us, but were gaining momentum.
