if you haven't been following it, Intel is only days away from announcing the "Thunderbolt" (AKA: light-peak) standard.
This is pretty cool. It's already built into some new devices about to released.

Have a look behind your computer or on the side of your laptop. Notice how there are all sorts of different shaped plugs for USB, your monitor, firewire, etc…
Thunderbolt is a new standard that will replace them all. Now you'll just have half a dozen Thunderbolt ports at the back of your computer to which you can plug any device.
Speeds of up to 10Gb/s can be achieved. Awesome. The plan is to hit 100Gb/s
This will kill off USB and pretty much anything else really, plus remove the need to have specialised cables for all your different devices. Only the network cable ports (RJ45) and microphone/headphone jacks will survive.
