Robert Lui re-signs for two more years

Very prudent move to sign him now when he has yet to really make his name.

He has talent of that there is no doubt.

At worst we are securing options which is never a bad thing

How ironic; since Prince left we have struggled for a half back and now have Moltzen, Lui and potentially Lazarus and Tomato competing for the position.

This is great news. I can only assume the knockers didn't see him run round week in week out in the Toyota Cup last year. He is a great talent and as Sheens has noted, still has a lot to learn. He's just turned 20, give him a break. I'm glad he'll be doing that learning at the Tigers and not somewhere else.

It's great for the club to have options in the halves for a change. Tans have been crying out for a half back and now we have 2 or 3 options. Be happy people. The competition for the spot will keep them all focused and only help their development.

The impressive retention drive of Wests Tigers has continued with the re-signing of half-back Robert Lui for the next two years. Off contract this season, Lui has agreed to a new two-year deal that keeps him at Wests Tigers until the end of 2012\. Following impressive performances for Wests Tigers in the U20s competition in 2009, Lui made his first grade debut against Cronulla Sharks in round 23\. In his three first grade games, Lui showed enough ability to stamp himself as a player of the future.

He then played a major role in Wests Tigers qualifying for the Toyota Cup grand final. He was also named the Toyota Cup five-eighth of the year.

A full-time member of the Wests Tigers NRL squad this season, Lui is eligible to play in the Toyota Cup competition in 2010 after turning 20 on February 23.

The talented half/five-eighth is now focusing on establishing a solid halves partnership with Benji Marshall.

Wests Tigers Coach Tim Sheens was delighted the club has secured one of its most exciting young prospects.

“We see Robbie as an integral part of the team. He has a very bright future,’’ Sheens said.

“He still has plenty to learn but he is naturally gifted, is quick, has great ball skills, a good kicking game, and knows how to read the play.”

The re-signing of Lui comes on top of NRL superstar Benji Marshall becoming a ‘Tiger for Life’ last week. Meanwhile, new Wests Tigers signing Lote Tuiqiri will start training next week.

Very good move IMO - obviously has talent. I doubt he is being paid a truckload of cash either, he is yet to be tested.

Agreed. Depth in the halves is a must if you are fair dinkum about winning a comp. I think the few years pre 2009 with Benji on the sideline should have taught us that lesson.

This is great news. It looks to me the club is really building something special. We are locking all our best talent in untill 2012, meaning they will be renegotiating for 2013….about the same time the salary cap should be rising due to the new tv deal.

surprised at the luke warm reaction to a signing that covers one of the most bitched about positions in the last 3 years.
at worst i think he will be good for depth.

really looking forward to seeing lui play this year.

This is fantastic news for the club! Sheens has big wraps on him as he did Marshall, Farah and Lawrence to name a few, and look at the path those 3 have taken so far. The fact he's a half makes it even better really. What i don't want though is people laying too much pressure on him. He'll need time but he'll get there.

In a few years we may be saying Great decission unlike the Mutts who regret letting thurston walk

im pleased but truthfully this year he should be in PL then in to FG

I think it's a good signing but I'm pretty sure Sheens has said Lui won't spend all season in FG as he reckons the week-in, week-out grind might be a bit much for Lui to cope with. He compared it to Daniel Mortimer of the Eels only coming into FG at the halfway point last season.

If Sheens is true to his word, then I'd expect Lui to spend some time in State Cup, but who knows what will happen as his form and injury will be the main things keeping him out of FG.

i think that was more coach speak than anything else.

considering the amount of people that want moltz in the 7,i doubt people will make many allowances.
i've got no doubt that in games where the forwards have been out played and the team has dropped alot of ball that lui will cop heaps.

I think we all have some doubts over Lui, but i think its a good move to re-sign him. At just 19, it would be too early to let go such a talented kid. The next two years will determine if we perservere anymore with him or not. Well done Tigers, good signing.

I think it is a great move. At the very least it will give the coach options, the team depth in case of injury, and Lui the comfort of knowing that he is wanted regardless of what side he is selected in. This will allow him to develop without the pressure of playing for a contract.

I would imagine he came with a rookie price tag, great signing. He will be very good for us, a lot of people have their doubts but I see class.People question his defense, I think their are players with higher profile them him with bigger problems than him in the defense department.

The future is looking stronger day by day

I totally agree with your comments, supercoach. Spot on!

I'll just add that he is also a very nice young man.
