Robert Lui

Why do people only condemn the other 2 in these kinds of threads? i guarantee if we were playing Souths this week and somebody started a thread about how we need to control Inglis, not one word of his off-field drama's would be mentioned, yet if we were playing the Cows and the same thread appeared about Lui, it would get hijacked about his off-field dramas. Can anybody tell im wrong about that?

Because Lui was apart of this club, there is a certain amount of ownership and disgust felt by people who once cheered him as one of their own.

There is no use making imaginary situations and then solely determining what the majority of this forum would do, and subsequently berating us for the decision you had us make in your own mind.

Its not imaginary. The next time a thread appears about Inglis and there is no mention of his off-field antics that will be a reality, not imaginary

And why should it matter if the other two played for us or not? they still did something as equally disgusting

LaT i think your still missing the point.. i think youll find it hard to find anyone who condoned it.

Point is

At the time of the Assault there were calls for his head.
It lasted VERY LITTLE once the new season got under way.
Whilst the tigers were winning, most forgot about what he did and how appalling it was.
There were rumours that he was being chased by the Cowgirls. And This forum made it clear that the club should sign him ASAP and matter of urgency. I cant remember the assault ever being bought up during the end of the season. how people forget quickly what he did because of how he was performing and how the club was travelling..

And the Inglis subject is the same, he did what he did. And as much as people will deny it, if their club was gunning for him, the fans would want him.. damn, i would have him in a heart beat.. but he is still a grub. Whilst he plays the game they allow him to play, he is the player every club would want..

Man….what a hammering! LMFAO!

Gotta love this line

Has what happened got anything to do with u??? No i dont think it does.

Sums you up to a T, rex.
But I guess only **you** can judge Lui, his situation, and the rest of us re the topic title, and make up our minds for us.

Tip: Speak for yourself.

T-Rexx - You do realise there were two incidents dont you?

Chronology and facts as reported:

September 2010 - Lui charged with assaulting his girlfriend. Those charges were later withdrawn. He was consequently not sacked from the Tigers. The discussion I recall from this forum at the time was that people were not happy with what he had done, but if he isn't charged how can he be sacked? Thats definitely not verbatim, just going from memory.

September 2011 - Lui charged. He pleads guilt. Charges enforced. He was sacked by WT following this incident.

From a strictly moral and philosophical perspective, I agree there is no difference between Lui, Bird and Inglis and how they should be treated. But the real world doesnt operate in the strictly philosophical. Lui's incident was a repeat offence, more raw/recent and he was sacked by the club and suspended by the NRL. His girlfriend was even frickin pregnant at the time! I mean, he couldnt have planned it better if he wanted more bad publicity.

In the early days after the Bird and Inglis incidents, I recall seeing a fair bit going around about them too. Likewise with Nate Myles etc. Sadly, there will probably be another degenerate who does something pretty soon that takes some of the pressure off Lui and others. Many a player has fled the NRL for the ESL to escape scrutiny (Joel Monaghan comes to mind of late).

mate, what the hell have i been typing???? this is my whole point.. You think because the charges were dropped makes it alright???? Fact is people forgot all about his past once the tigers and him started to play well… thats all im saying..... only when he re did it the tigers sacked him... But i bet if he didnt get the sack, and the team was winning and he was playing well the 2nd incident would be forgotten.. damn, the Titans and Souths dont mention it, its a forgotten thing... you think our members and fans are any different??

The way people can tell the future and what everyone would have done if this or that happened, is amazing.

I have no idea what you're typing to be honest. Your argument is all over the place and that's what most people who are having a go at you are saying.

Yes it actually makes a very significant difference that the charges were dropped the first time. When you commit a crime, it is by definition committed against the state. Yes there are human victims, but criminal proceedings are brought by the state as crimes against the state. Hence why you have case names like "R (Regina) v Lui" or "the Crown v Lui". If the Crown wants to drop charges, it does so on the basis that it cannot establish a verdict against the accused. Criminal charges are not dropped because Lui's girlfriend decides not to "press charges". This is a common misunderstanding of the criminal justice system. If the Crown dropped its case, it means there was not enough evidence to find him guilty, not for any other reason. If he is not guilty, it makes it very hard for the Tigers to terminate his contract on the basis of breach or even bringing the club into disrepute, or for them to even prove he did anything wrong.

Therefore, yes, I can see why he was not sacked by our club after the 2010 incident and the fact most people understood these facts and circumstances, and rationale for the decision by the club at the time is why all fans were calling for his head. I can see why he was sacked after the 2011 incident, where he himself plead guilt, thus admitting the charges against him.

Forgetting the assault on his missus I wouldn't take him back anyway.
A turnstile in defence who would be hard pressed putting anyones grandmother on the deck.
Seems the only time he was game to put his hands on anyone was when he was off his face and it was a woman in front of him.
Leave him anywhere but here.

Didn't Masada Iosefa assault a woman and get sacked from Penrith, only to be signed by the Tigers once he was playing in NSW cup for Mounties?

If yes and we then have one lady beater in the team, id prefer it to be Lui, as he's paid his dues and is an exceptional footballer.

I think Robert Lui was the best halfback we have had since Prince left us. His best position was #6 but he was developing into a very good #7\. He was really starting to come into his own in the big finals games, he was our best player in the Saints 2010 1 point loss.

I know some very good people that know him and hold him in a very high regard. I think the two off field incidents was out of charcter but I can understand why he was sacked and why we can never have him back at our club.

In saying that the half of football he played for the Cowboys this year was the best they have looked all year. He is still a very talented footballer. I for one hope he puts all the off filed stuff behind him and has a good career to provide for his family. He in my opinon has served his punshiment (yes it probably wasn't long enough) and I will look forward to watching him play again.

a few points in regards to comments in this thread.
1\. I agree in principal that people do make excuses and are more forgiving to those they like or those that are more talented and can offer more this is not restricted to football in general the best doctor or lawyer get more leeway than the average one.
2\. I see the bird and lui situations to be identical and despise them both and have commented as such on here. lui confessed and birds actions are enough to convince me despite the court over turning the guilty plea. Inglis in my mind has enough doubt for me to apply the innocent until proven guilty rule. I have always liked Inglis so perhaps im subconscious ly bias.
3\. Although you have said there is more to the story, I can't think of a thing that would change my mind on lui
4\. I wasn't s big fan of his football anyway.
