If we win this week we will be in for a huge season because we have 3 19 yr olds in the spine, backups in both centre spots, 6 new players which so many new combinations and our star player who hasn't played a trial.

Will be really happy if we keep it competitive but given the team that would be a major surprise- in saying that whatever the result I think we will have a good season just not expecting much this week
If we win we will be in for a big season. Damn. I wish I could live in your world. It must be beautiful.

Why do people insist on moving players who have never played the position to that position

Particularly centre .....it is arguably the hardest spot to defend and people are wanting to move Bula .....Mason ......Latu Fainu to centre .....if we move someone to centre it should be Bird
It's a fair comment, but people want to see them tried in positions based on their strengths in the hope you can find a starting spot for them.

It's not like there are non-negotiable starters in the centres, so that is the position to hopefully find that player that makes a succesful switch and makes the team better.

Probably says more about our need to get into the recruitment market for a genuine centre than anything.

The elephant in the room is Benji. We have the players. Just need to work on the centres. Do you see it like that at all?
The nrl head coach is becoming more and more like an nfl head coach / EPL manager . The general gameplay and way the team plays is dictated by them , as well as all the other bullshit like player retention , hirings, firings , dropping players etc . But most of the actual gameplan and day to day is done by the assistants .
I feel we have upgraded in that department , and the team is galvanising around Benji .
So I feel like all the ingredients are there to succeed . I guess we will see . I will not be shocked if we win our fair share and the “can Benji coach” question gets answered . If he does fail , then he really just didn’t have it , which will be a shame .

Coaching is such a multi faceted job; he needs to be a good comunicator (tick), a leader (tick), have the ability to impart tactical knowledge (on the fence - but based on what the players have been saying it is probably a tick) and be able to develop appropriate, executable, game plans (partially competent - based on 75-80% of most games an the few well executed games we played; e.g. Cronulla/Canberra)

The last two aspects have not been fully demonstrated - but was that his (and his staff's) ability to impart the knowlege or the poor standard of the roster? Time will tell.

I get the feeling that Benji has the leadeship skills; although he was too soft last year and has changed it up for this season. Does he have the technical skills? I think, within the staff we do and we now have the players to execute at an NRL level. I wholeheartedly trust that we get off to a good start and we can put all of the can he can't he coach issues behind us. First opportunity to put it all to be is ony 25 and a half hours away!

I think he’d have the technical skills. He was a half in the nrl across 3 clearly distinctly different generations of football.
The front foot tigers of the 04-11. The nrls shift into wrestling , and really defensive football, then the shift into something of a hybrid of the previous 2 eras , and heaps of structure and honestly fitness.
The issue is will be communicating his knowledge in a way the players can absorb and execute .

Exactly, although he seems to have the ability to communicate in relation to leadership and culture - can he clearly explain the X's and O's moving about the place. I personally think he can and have seen some evidence last season as in most games we could do it for 70% of the time. We just couldn't go the 80 - we will know soon enough though.

If he can get this side across the line tomorrow with centres that don't have a great defensive record that will be a great start!

I’ll be upset if it’s anything other than a W this week. Sure, we can compete and look decent for 60mins but without the W it’s not worth much. Seen it year after year. We have a few winnable fixtures to start the season and if we don’t jag a few early wins we’ll be in for another stinking year.

I'm driving down from the sticks. I can't find (also, haven't looked too hard) any game day info. Is it just the NRL game at 6.00? Or are there any other games to watch first? Please and thank you 😊

Looks like a stand alone game.

Excited for season opener
Only concern is our center match up vs Best and Gagai
If Faataape can handle them it wil be fantastic

Newcastle not super close for fans to get there on a Friday night + Campbo Friday night not ideal for anyone that works outside the area.
6.00 is pretty early, eh. My friends can't get there in time, after work in Parramatta
