LIVE GAME Round 14 v the Panthers

Live Game Discussion
Luke Keary's analysis has impressed me this year. He speaks honestly and has a feel for the game. At halftime he gave Jerome Luai a serve saying 'Jerome has not brought any success to the Tigers. He hasn't brought anything to this club. Glad someone has said it. He needs to be dropped honestly.
Starting to agree. We were flying whie he was injured. As soon as he came back our attack has sputtered. Douhi has been out as well but weve only won 2 games with him in the halves this year. Other thing is the teams form has cratered ever since he decided to go to P.N.G. i know the guys all say the right things but wonder if theyre a bit off him for going. No doubt he brings great qualities off the field but on it he has been trash this year. Yesterday isnt on him, he had no ball to do anything with. The last 2 years with him he hasnt done anything. He wanted to be Batman. Hes not even Alfred. If i could offload him at the end of the year i woud. Its Benji driving us forward not Luai. We desperatly need his 1.2 million for depth signings.

It is not the NRL or Refs if we cannot tackle properly, markup correct in defense, we gave away repeat six tackles far to often especially against Penrith of all teams.

Did you read the point I was responding to … “ the NRL has a problem …” not the Wests Tigers … the NRL… im saying the NRL doesn’t really have a problem because they can just tell the referees to stop blowing 6 agains

One thing I do agree with, regarding the latter comments, is that Benji has made lots of head scratching team selections recently. In yesterday's game, Geyer on an edge Makasini in the centres and, before that, picking Tavana ahead of Laulilii, refusing to select Skelton, starting Seyfarth, rewarding Toa's rubbish play with first team selection and, finally, not giving Latu Fainu a proper starting opportunity. All of this must be puzzling and deflating to the rest of the team. Also, either Benji is becoming too soft and nurturing again or the team is getting tired of his voice. Can't think of any other reason for yesterday's debacle. Would a Bellamy or Bennett coached team lose by that margin? We seem to be getting good at getting flogged by 60.

Was at the game today, and I'm in my mid-30s and that was probably our most heart breaking performance. It was the most disappointed I have felt since we got knocked out in that semi in 2011. Today was always going to be a tall order with injuries and match fitness questions from our depth players, but I was expecting more.

The very obvious areas where I saw that we simply could not respond was our second-row depth, and overall ball playing. Its clear that Penrith's strength is having multi-phase plays, with multiple receivers. By the second or third pass of a play there was usually an overlap or an opening. Having inexperienced players on the edges, mixed with second rowers that are quite one dimensional is where we cannot compare to the depth of the top teams.

The absence of Twal, not only for his statistical work ethic, but also his offload game hurt us massively. A number-13 with some ball playing would be better than placing just another a prop out there in my opinion. Compare that to what Papalii, Yeo and Lussick were able to do in connecting their edges.
I think we saw how out of depth Mavrik Geyer and Charlie Murray are.

Then we saw how our backline got totally outclassed by the Penrith backline.
What does Benji do other then get the team tackling again and working on defense.

So dissapointing

The start to this year was good whilst it lasted, real good.

Having Api and Jahream back last week and a similar intensity with Twal still in the engine room brought most of that needed to cover for the missing Samuela, along with Doueihi and Taylan against a midfield team in the dogs.

Sadly, WT just cannot compete with a runaway team like Penrith for long periods in our current iteration, and especially so when we give up early possession like today.
There is competing and then there is losing 64 blot.... If we made them earn it that's one thing but to roll over and not even try like we did yesterday well that's an entirely different thing .....

Benji still has so much to learn about coaching. Penrith have been using the same method of shortening our line in defence, with the middle’s carefully running into gaps from the PTB or the back rowers breaking from the scrum running through the line.
It only took a split second to put our defence on their heels and keep our FB guessing.
Our boys would have had more confidence going into the game if they knew what to expect. To me it looked like they had no idea.

For every fan who says pick one player there is another saying he is useless. After a loss every coach has picked the wrong team according to a percentage of the fans. Benji or any losing coach for that matter is never going to escape that criticism.
We were embarrassed yesterday by a superior footy team and club/ system. We are making up the numbers and are still a long way from dragging ourselves out of the cellar with or without Benji. It is still a deep rooted club issue and we were reminded of that again yesterday.

There are about 5-6 players in the squad that seem to me to be pretty friendless amongst the fan base…

Although Benji gives a player like Charlie Murray a go and people here love it …before the game anyway ,..

I wouldn't like to be in CEO Shaun Mielekamp's shoes. How does he hold onto our current sponsorship portfolio? Let alone attempt to try to increase private investment in our club. Three of our last 4 thrashings have been by fellow Sydney clubs in Manly, Penrith, and the Sharks. The NRL sponsorship market in Sydney is the toughest in the game. How does Shaun convince our sponsors to stay on board when there are other Sydney based clubs who are clearly light years ahead of us?

The only silver lining I can see is that we didn't have the 4.00pm free to air Channel 9 game yesterday. Imagine any young Tigers fan being subjected to that and then having to go to school on Tuesday. We don't do ourselves any favours.

Sorry meant to have a crack at you Tom.

Just so disappointed in the weak effort yesterday.

Madden is a great example of fan critique - club/ Benji bagged for signing him as depth at the beginning of the year. Forced to use him and he becomes the player we need, and after the last few games back to useless.
Wayne Bennett's classic line comes to mind

I remember saying about Madden after the first few games to see what happens when the opposition get a good look at him and start gameplanning ..

I like some things about his game but he is what he always has been …a fringe first grader …

I like what he appears to have done to our culture, but performance wise he’s beginning to look like Adam Blair or I-Pap 2.0. Why do these players come here and play down to a shadow of themselves? It’s hard to say. Is it us or is it them.
