Round 2 team 2026

what has that got to do with Saturday ? I judge performance on what my eyes tell me … not some unconscious bias from 9 months ago .
It’s to the point that this forum frustrates me . People speak in such absolutes , and to be honest some pretty nasty comments … and then it turns out they’re making assessments from 13 months ago. The kid is 19/20 … the club is gonna trial him in his junior positions . Some don’t succeed and need to change positions .
Connor Watson is the pinup of this . He was supposed to put pressure on Tedesco early doors at fullback . Then he went to Newcastle , and came
Back a lock/ hooker/ utility . That’s clearly the pathway forward for Mason.
I’m big on pedigree . You don’t make Aus Schoolboys if you’re shit . Sometimes you just need a tweak. There’s a footy player there that’s for sure .
Am I missing a thread where Mason was "hated on" over his performance over the weekend? He hardly got a mention in the live thread by the looks of it. I can find hardly any examples of the thing you are complaining about. He had a solid game. I agree with you, there's a good player there.

Of course some people speak in absolutes, ignore it. Unless you are saying that everybody on the forum speaks in absolutes, then that would be hilariously ironic.

Nah , it was on a podcast plus the occasional comment I’ve seen . Just unfair . It’s not directed at you . Just making a holistic point in general .
And no it would be more than ironic to say the whole forum speaks in absolutes . It would also be hugely hypocritical .
I just think sometimes we as fans (and now I am being holistic) forget these guys are human. And I also have a lot of time for kids who say “ I want to be a wests tiger” which he has come out and said .
I’m a pretty loyal dude to people who warrant it . I mean it’s easy to say , we all want him to succeed , but I’m not sure that’s true. There’s a few on here who will probably drop off when the tigers start winning … and I’m not even joking .

I've tried to like Mason - I really have. But he frustrated the heck out of me on Saturday. He barely passed the ball and there was just no 'result' from any of his touches that I could see. Just a basic 4 or 5 meter hit up and an easy tackle for the opposition. Was that his role? I don't know - maybe. I do agree that he looks like a footballer - but I just don't see him being able to lock down any position. He's young. Maybe this 'middle' rotation will suit him down the track. But he's ressies for mine.

I'm in Mason's corner. Him playing any first grade last year, let alone in positions he is not suited to, was a problem with the depth in the club, not his potential as a footballer. When you throw in guys who are not ready or out of position and it doesn't work out it will draw the ire of fans, something the club needs to reflect on.

Good points though. Lets hope some wins can be strung together in both grades. Winning will fix just about everything.

It was his role . He was playing 13 . Take his hitups , get a fast roll on , get the defence retreating . Create doubt , so when he does go deep into the line the defence has to account for him so they can’t slide off early . And because he’s zippy it means if he’s doing into at the 4 man (4th in from the edge) it means the middles have to work hard to cover inside . So yes at times it looks like he’s taking shit for hitups sake , but it’s not for that play . It’s for the play in minute 60 when the middles arnt working as hard anymore , and the edges defensively have turned right in to cover for the inside step . And if they don’t turn in , then the inside step should put him through a hole or at worse , generate ruck speed because the cover has had to make a legs tackle , and he’s immediately on his front .
That’s as far as i can see what his role is .
At times though I think he picks the wrong player to engage in the defensive line , but that could be coaching as well ie. whenever you get a run I want you to run at AFB and get him moving laterally . Or get between the middles and force them to both have to tackle you .” Who knows what his instructions are .

💯 agree

I’ll be surprised if Madden is going to displace AD who has trained at 7 all offseason , based on 1 trial game versus lower grade players ?

Maybe a bit later in the year after we see how things are going with AD
Yes agree
And I don’t think it would go down too well with L.Fainu if Madden got a start in front of him.
I see Madden being a bench player when one of L.Fainu/Douehi/Romey is out injured.

I'll put a few observations in the trial thread but it was interesting that the 10 or so mins into half time we played a middle of Mason, Murray & Jack with Haywood, possibly the smallest middle quartet in history.

It'll be interesting if this system continues - we use smaller, workhorse, agile players in that key period before HT when fatigue sets in so they can work their arses off, fast line speed, fast marker defence & quick PTBs in attack, fast leg speed etc to get their roll on.

I was also thinking they will likely get outmuscled due to lack of size.
The good thing about these players is their high energy style of play, demonstrating good line speed when defending and good leg speed with their ball carries.
I know you like myself have always been interested in us possibly recruiting someone like Ray Stone, maybe we have a Ray Stone clone in Luke Jack,

Had similar thoughts about lack of size & obviously aware the opposition was NSW Cup quality but this could be a great strategy, maybe using the likes of Seyfarth, Twal & Sione instead who are bigger but either very agile & fit or workhorse/effort types.

Yeah I am loving Jack also this season from both his trials. I was critical of some of his performances on the right edge in Cup last season mostly for his missed tackles but it seems like he has put on some size and found his niche in the middle with this his effort plays, line speed & axe-like tackles at times.

I think we're shaping up like this. Skelton will get first crack on the left as the incumbent and without Latu we'll need to carry Jock. Heamasi will definitely be in the 19 the first few weeks. based on selections + what we've seen / heard Seyfarth looks like he'll unfortunately get the jump on Sione.

jersey 14 for mine is the only one up in the air. I'd like it to be Haywood but I can't see them blooding him. Hope was poor but he's probably the front runner although Murray could also do a job. I think it's either of those two, but keen to hear other's thoughts.

You would think 14 will be either Hope or Murray.
Just on Hope I have now seen plenty of our supporters say he was poor on Saturday.
Sure he can be better with his passing game, but geez I thought his defensive line speed was great and he looks a bit bigger than last season helping his defence be a bit stronger.
No doubt young Haywood is already a better number 9 when we have the ball, but Hope the much stronger defender at this stage.

I tend to agree. given how tight early games are there's a real emphasis on defence and effort then I think Tristan gets the jump as you say. I'd anticipate he'll work on his work in attack thru the week, unfortunately he was a bit of a handbrake and had some moments I'm sure he'd like to have over again.

I don’t understand the Heath Mason hate. Do people realise he was playing lock on Saturday ? He was putting shots on , making 1 on 1 tackles against much bigger men at full pace , finding his front in his play the balls … and the biggest thing not getting pushed backwards causing the team to lose momentum .
I think this is the perfect way to use him . Basically a second fullback without the pressure of playing fullback . I thought he was good on the weekend .
I think people are looking him through a half/fullback lense . When I don’t think that’s the way the club wants to play him nor is it his own personals future . He always struck me as a kid who wants get in there and mix it , he simply wasn’t strong enough yet . It seems maybe he’s hit some PBs in the weights room this off season .
Too many people expect a 20-year old to be the finished product.

We came home strong in that period . The bulldogs modus operende that one .

Not saying you're wrong, but for me Sione should be our third middle picked and the first choice on the bench.

He is > bunty, hunt and Seyfarth
Borderline with Twal
He is behind a fit and firing Pole (early 2025) and outplayed the post injury version of Fonua

don't worry I'm with you, but I don't think Benji agrees. I'll be surprised if Sione makes the 19 to start the year if I'm honest, seems as if we're looking for experience and defensive resolve.

if I were the coach it'd be a bit different to the side I named lol

I'd love to see Murray get a spot in the 19. He was tremendous on the weekend. Of course, he's unlikely to stand out as much in first grade but I think he adds a real point of difference to the rest of the players in our squad
