LIVE GAME Round 20 v Titans

Live Game Discussion
In my books the eight was never an even a remote chance right from game one and I thought somewhere around 12th would be a good result. One bye , Cows game at LO and The Coast again will probably gets somewhere near 12th if we win those games
Yeah my expectations at the beginning of the season were 12th and honestly I’d be happy if that’s how it ends for us.

However, the closeness of this comp has made the finals a distinct possibility for us if we actually got our act together and played good footy over the next 6 weeks. I don’t think it will happen but just the fact that it could is quite surreal. We’re usually nowhere near contention at this stage of the year.

Getting more bizarre Benji
Hope the hooker .Api to the bench
Would think we should start fast not be chasing the game after 20 mins
The 2nd row of Sukkar and Bird seems weak as
I'm thinking team is based on who praises the coach at training
Please be objective
Pick the best footballers
Lose to the bottom dweller then you lose me !
I take it you’re still with us then? Sukkar solid in defence again but they need to use him in attack near the line. For the time bird was on the field they barely used him in attack. The halves are just clunky with no direction and need to get their game strategy sorted out very quickly. It’s very obvious the edge forwards and backs have no idea what’s next and just playing what they see or comes their way in hope of making something out of nothing. Heart pumping stuff watching them..

There was a huge gap Luai saw, it closed fairly quick though but he went very close to scoring
I’m expecting a fair bit more from Luai, but I can’t blame him for running the ball when space presents itself.
I do understand the concern raised that he possibly should have directed play closer to the middle of the field to try and make a field goal attempt much easier, but sometimes with the rushing defence scoring a try can be easier than landing a late field goal.
Luai is not a natural creator for others, he knows how to be part of plays that creates for others, but the money ball does not often come from him.
This being said I ideally want Luai running the ball to put the opposing defence in two minds as often as possible, but would like him to kick a little bit more often, rather than dishing it off to someone’s on the 5th tackle.

I think it does matter because it shows whether our leaders on the field were thinking.
Going for the try is a low percentage play. Setting up and closing the game out is what the pro outfits do. Yes we got away with it this time, but if that was the dogs or one of the really good defensive teams, that likely wouldn’t have gone our way.
As you said though, it’s a good play to go into the lessons learned list.
Just warched the replay of 100% Footy. Api said that they went away from the FG set. I expect the gap that opened for Luai was the catalyst. That said - they got into the right position and executed so good skills there.

Interesting from Api was why Benji was filthy - there were so many errors and they did not execute the game plan and he inferred that this has been the case over the last couple of weeks. Where do you lay the blame - on the coaches or the playing group? The solution shoudl be pretty simple - if your not executing the plan you are palying reggies - the troubel is we have no depth to use that to coerce players. So where does Benji go if the team is being coached to execute a FG set and go away from it, and they are coached to play a plan and go away from it?

Tough place for a coach to be.

I was only thinking today still being a mathematical chance and we are almost at August ...my god its sèems like forever
A couple of the close losses went our way and we would be all jumping up and down now with finals football being a real possibility. Although I guess a few of our wins could have gone the other way to.

This year was our big chance, no team is really dominating and plenty of teams are underperforming.

Do you think a Luai and Fainu halves combination will work and be a success long term ?
I’ve got concerns, both very good players individually, but it just doesn’t seem to be a fluent combination although still early days.

Latu needs time but also we need stability in key positions. The kid has played maybe 5 80min games in last few years. This year he has had different fullbacks, hookers, locks, backrowers and centers around him.

Even Luai I kinda get being in a very new system, with limited cattle and players changing all around him. Most halves won’t deliver with the instability we have had.

I actually saw it differently.

I don’t think the intent was to go for the try but more was about getting the Titans on the back foot & ball on the left to allow AD/Latu to kick (both right footers), the space opened up big time for Luai and he had no choice but to run hard for the corner.

Kicking from right to left is very difficult field goal wise with player pressure for a right footer.

In the end it meant the Titans were all rushing back to get onside and we managed to have some depth preventing the Titans to put pressure on AD for a field goal that just cleared the posts.

If we just setup another forward play the field goal would’ve been structured and probably 40-45mtrs with potential for wrong side and Titans defensive line structured.

I think Luai just played what he saw and took the chance and it nearly came off. One way or another we had to find points to win - no guarantees with a field goal either no matter how well it is set up

Errors or going away from the game plan? It's worrying if it's the game plan. It happens in games that things don't go as planned, but if it's becoming a trend than that doesn't bode well moving forward particularly when the 2 guys who should be driving that plan are co-captains
