Royce back

Is this dinky di still , would of thought that Potter would have wanted to choose his own assistants and I'm pretty sure he would be baulking at the thought of Georgallis and Royce as his defensive coaches

If they went and got Mo , watching a defensive session could be akin to watching the 3 Stooges

The trouble is a lot of people try to make rugby league a lot more complicated than it needs to be. Sticking to the basics will take you a long way.

I see what your getting at ,but you need to do more than getting the basics right at top level

That won't help you beat the Melbournes , Manly's ,Souths etc

The other question is "Is this side capable of doing the basic things right for 80 minutes" week in week out

harsh comment from people who dont know a football from a boiled egg

Not so harsh when you deal with facts, but don't let them get in the way… :crazy

except we are not dealing in facts, we are dealing in opinions

I actually believe that both of these comments have some merit in them.

We will need to get back to the basics, and do them well, and we do need to be consistent in every match for the full 80 minutes, thats how those teams you have mentioned win, week after week.

Just a snapshot on a part of our defense:

Tries conceded –---last 5 seasons (minus semis)

**WTs** - 2012 - 95, **2011 - 76** , 2010 - 84, **2009 - 83**, 2008 - 98 = 436 tries or **1744 points**
**Melb** - 2012 - 66, **2011 - 52**, 2010 - 62, **2009 - 60**, 2008 - 50 = 290 tries or **1160 points**

Yeah, but our attack was better, We could outscore them all even if it was only by a couple.

Diferent game these days….................

defence is 80% about one word and it begins with A. The problem every team has is getting the A in defence 80% of the time. If you look back on 80% of WT crunch games the biggest single factor in winning was defence. They always turned up with the right A and won. Can you guess what A is?

I would love for WT to be turned into a good defensive team just for once in our lives. I'm tired of having small heart attacks every time the opposition enters our red zone and having to rely on our attack to get us over the line. It would be nice to feel confident in our defence right throughout matches and that we could hold out 8-9 times out of 10 when under pressure on our line. If Potter and staff can work this miracle and transform them into a consistently strong defensive unit, then I will be one very happy person!

Snow is spot on though…...our attitude in D sucks, Ive seen what youre describing flippedy, occasionally, sometimes two games in a row, rarely three....and more often we dont see it

I reckon the whole defense is attitude is outdated.
I reckon it is mostly decision making and acting in unison with those around coupled with techniques to make a tackle in a manner that prevents a quick play the ball.

having a system that works that the players understand and work within under pressure is the key.
Attitude is only a small part of it these days.

Watch manly attack with their defense goose

What happens to that ''system'' when players are struggling, fatigues, under pressure….what happens when only ONE players doesnt cover - thru exhaustion or inexperience - and lets down the team.....what happens when the line is broken and the D is shot? what do they call on then?

You call on each other, your team mate, you not letting HIM down

What you talk of is what is initially put in play....it doesnt simply always work that way though

Sorry Goose can't agree with you on that. A player or players can have the best tackling techniques , be given the best game plan for defence , etc, etc but if they don't turn up with the best Attitude then nothing else will matter. If you look at the games when WT attitude in defence was good ..fast line speed all game , multiples in tackles with aggression , rushing to cover just in case a tackle was missed or an offload given…we were never beaten. IMO Storm have the best Attitude in defence and the one thing they do better than any other team is rushing to cover just in case a tackle is missed or an offload given and to do this players have to very good concentration and be willing to take those extra steps and not just sit back an expect someone else to clean it up. They also have to individually and collectively have the desire to go the extra mile in defence. If you want to see a good example of WT bad Attitude in defence just have a look at the try Barba scored against us from near his own try line. Watching it made me sick.

Clearly you need both … Attitude and technique/strategy.
One without the other leads to regular sessions of group angst in behind your own sticks.
