Sorry guys, meant to shoot through a better post re this photo from @tiger_one. Photo shows former Balmain half Greg Oliphant passing the old leather football that preceded the current Steeden. This was the heavy ball that 'Golden Boots' used to successfully take penalties with from 55 yards out. Also note Balmain centre Dennis ' Kamikaze' Bendall in the background.

Greg Oliphant, a Queenslander, had a career long feud with Wests and NSW half Tommy Raudonikis. Tommy would actively target Oliphant during a game and on many occasions simply belted him. They toured together with the Kangaroos where Tommy did everything within the rules, (and at times outside the rules) to snatch the cherished No. 7 jersey from Oliphant. His tenacity ultimately proved successful. Post football their dislike for each other culminated in a boxing bout which was arranged as a charity fundraiser. Once again Tommy proved victorious. Both were great halfbacks and represented both sides of our merger.
