Rugby league world mourns death of Magpies great

A thorough gentleman and one of the best to have played the game. I was lucky enough to meet him, spend some time with him and receive advice from him with coaching my team. May he rest in peace.

RIP Keith. A True Magpie Legend.

FORMER Kangaroo, Magpies great and leading referee Keith Holman has passed away aged 84.

NRL lost one of its greats when the national and state representative halfback passed away on Tuesday night.

West Tigers chief executive officer Stephen Humphreys confirmed the death of the great this morning on 2GB.

"We had the sad news overnight,'' Humphreys said.

"Keith had not been well in recent years . He was in a [nursing home](http://caringforasenior.com/SeniorLiving/) in Miranda. Regrettably he had a heart attack last night and died in [Sutherland Hospital](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sutherland_Hospital) a but before 9pm.''

Holman's club career was with the [Western Suburbs Magpies](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Suburbs_Magpies) from 1949 to 1961.

Considered one of the best players in the game, Holman became a coach for the club and then also one of the game's leading referees.

Holman, [who in 2007 was selected by a panel of experts at halfback in an Australian Team of the 50s,](http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/team-of-the-50s-named/story-e6frexnr-1111114085439) officiated in the 1971 grand final and went on to referee during Australia's tour of New Zealand in 1975.

In 2008, Holman was included on a list of Australia's 100 Greatest Players (1908-2007) which was commissioned by the NRL and ARL to celebrate the code's centenary year in Australia.

The same year the [Western Suburbs Magpies](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Suburbs_Magpies) celebrated their centenary by inducting six inaugural members into the club's Hall of Fame, one of whom was Holman.

I hope the club, in conjunction with Western Suburbs Rugby League and Western Suburbs Junior Rugby League does something to recognize Yappy's contribution to rugby league, in particular the Western Suburbs area. He use to go to the junior grand final day, spend all day there presenting winners medals and runner up medals to kids. He did that for the u/6's all the way up to the u/18's. He needs to be recognized, if it hasn't already happened.

RIP to Mr Holman and condolensces to his family and friends. (He was the cousin of my uncle).

Sad sad news, R.I.P. Yappy….he touched many many people it seems, such was the personality of the man, highly likeable good bloke

Dunno how WTs or Wests DJRL can really do anything with it being offseason....hopefully theres a minutes silence/ black armbands at the Kangaroos v Kiwis test on Sun.

Whilst he may be the most loyal and best 'Magpie' ever, his identity was bigger than just a club man. A representative, a referee and good supporter of juniors and the game in general.

As a former Balmain supporter and now Wests Tigers supporter, Aussie supporter and lover of league in general, this is a sad day.

RIP Keith Holman.
