Rumor - Fulton Done.

From Wests Tigers website

Liam Fulton statement
Tue 24th June, 03:45PM
15 Years
Earlier this afternoon Wests Tigers received feedback from Dr Paul McCrory regarding recent scans undertaking by Liam Fulton after he suffered a number of concussions in the first half of the 2014 season.

Liam and his family are now taking time to consider the results.

Wests Tigers and Liam will be making no further comment on the issue until all parties have met and have discussed the results further.

The Club asks that the privacy of Liam and his family is respected at this time.

Doesn't sound great.

We let this guy play after concussions and fined !!!!

I think it's well overdue that ALL players wear head gear , simple.

research has shown no benefits of headgear for concussions. Concussions are caused by the brain getting rattling in the skull and consequent bruising.

100% correct. And because of this headgear can actually make concussions worse due to the head beating against the headgear.

Just read he is taking time out to think of his future as he gets the results of his tests tomorrow

The fact he has to consider his future after receiving the results suggests it's not all that positive. My feeling is he will retire ( I have no medical background)
Should he choose to do so, I hope he is remembered as the tremendous clubman and player he has been for our team.

Fulton has been one of the greatest Tigers of all time no doubt about it. As it stands he's got a place in the Tigers best 17 of all time. Champion little old school footballer.

The word champion gets thrown around a lot, but I think if Liam does not play again this season or again, the tigers will see what a champion we had, he may not be a star in the side, but for giving 150% each week there are not many that go past him. I for one will miss his whole hearted efforts, knowing Fulton stood between our try line and the opposition, I always felt he would come out on top. So if this is the end, u will always be a CHAMPION in my eyes.

Except when missed all those tackles I guess.

Loyal servant of the club, like many before him, and he deserves our respect but he has never been a champion.

I will be disappointed if he goes out this way but, in truth, it wasnt far from the end.

The Tigers are trying to get a salary concession to buy a replacement. Anyone on the market available for him? Or should Siro or someone cover his spot?

If he has to retire he will be missed by fans and his team mates , great club man who always gave his all every time he put on his jumper ,

An honest, hard working player for the club. It will be a shame to see him leave the game this way, but I'd rather him live the next 50-70 years without any serious impairment.

ur entitled to ur say, but gee the bloke has given his all and he may not be a champion in the sense of the word, but it would be nice to give credit were credit is due and not bag him if this is the end. And by the way champions come in all different moulds.

I find that hard to believe.

sounds terrible :frowning:

one of the most underrated players.

always played above his weight and even when out of form, he seemed to do enough to do the right thigs for the team.

we'll miss him heavily for years to come imo. hope he stays around the team.

Big fan of Fulton and played well above his weight.

Went overseas to help with salary cap restrictions.

Health is more important than Rugby League.

Has a young family which shoudl be his priority.

Fulton please retire now before some more serious happens.

I think he is in business with Bryce Gibbs who is also playing his last year.

At least he won a premiership which a lot of players have never achieved.

Headgear and concussion still has the jury out. British medical journal did a review of all the evidence and found that they still don't know either way if it helps or not. It definitely did not say it made it worse.

From memory there was research about 10 years ago suggesting headgears focus the impact making it worse.

Interesting one. Would love a clear answer either way.

From Foxsports
FORMER Australian-born NFL star Colin Scotts believes repeated concussions are a “death sentence” for players and any NRL player suffers three in one season should retire.

Having seen first hand the impact of chronic concussions in the NFL, Scotts believes repeated head injuries can be like a ticking time bomb that can result in mental illness and depression.
His concerns come after Wests Tigers stood down back-rower Liam Fulton, who has had four concussions in six games
The NFL is embroiled in its own drama, with more than 4500 former players seeking concussion-related lawsuits. Scotts, who was concussed during his career, said: “Three strikes and you’re out.”
Fulton, 29, hasn’t been told to retire by doctors — but it is an option. Wests Tigers have no immediate plans to return him to first grade.
The club has said it will give Fulton time to discuss the matter with family and friends.
Fulton’s most recent concussion came in Round 12 against Newcastle. He had scans last week in Melbourne with neurologist Paul McCrory.
The Tigers and Fulton, who did not train yesterday, will meet again next week.
It has been suggested that Fulton could stand down for the rest of this year and return next season to fulfil the final two years of his contract.
While Wests Tigers CEO Grant Mayer refused to comment, the club main’s concern is Fulton’s long-term welfare.
Scotts, an advocate for protecting players from concussion and related mental illness, has been monitoring the Fulton situation closely.
“If players are exposed to continual concussion then it will be a death sentence,” Scotts said.
“Wests Tigers have made a brave decision and I totally respect them for it. This isn’t about the game — it’s about Liam Fulton’s life after football.
“Clubs have to think past today and how their players are going to live the rest of their lives.
“I would hate to be a club doctor or member of a coaching staff that brought a player back from concussion and he ended up with a mental illness or depression.
“I think three concussions in one year and the NRL should step-in and ensure that player retires. That is as blunt as I can be. Three strikes and you’re out.
“This is now a reality of what is happening in rugby league. It seems when players get one concussion, they get two or three.
“Is that a coincidence or has the brain gone soft? The brain may not be as strong.”
An NRL spokesman said clubs were taking the new concussion rules seriously and were “acting in the interests of their players”.
“We do not believe it is in anyone’s interests to be prescriptive about the number of concussions which lead to a player standing down from the game because it will vary from player to player,” the spokesman said.“The club doctors are doing a good job assessing and treating players and we think the new rules are working well.
