so….are we signing anyone?

Moley says..

Souths are busy trying to offload players for next season to fit in James Roberts — and Tim Grant could be the next to go.

Grant has been linked to several clubs, with the Tigers closest to gaining his signature.

Talks with the Tigers have been ongoing and it’s just a question of the two parties agreeing to a dollar amount. An an announcement could even be made before Christmas.

If Souths are topping up a decent portion of his salary then it could work in our favor. I would prefer Brenton Lawrence, but beggars can't be choosers.

The players other Clubs reject is what make Wests Tigers the best…I'm not a massive Grant fan on current form but he was an Origin Player who is big and can defend so If Souff's are picking up a lot of his contract well I suppose it's good...just think with reduced interchange where you will need bigger minutes out of your Props... players like him may struggle a bit...will add experience to a young forward pack

Actually I would say you will see props playing fairly well the same minutes as before the changes. The difference will be back rowers playing ore minutes. Props will still at 8 take up 4 of those interchanges in a standard game

Given that and given his previous form, lower cost die to Souths covering a wack, origin experience and relative youth then i think it is a good signing esp as he plays more as a first hit up prop in a set something we lost when Kethy went

There was a period a couple of years ago when so called experts considered Grant and Woods would be the NSW starting props for an extended period until Grant fell off the radar.

I believe Grant has plenty to offer and would give us a prop rotation of Grant, Woods, Ava and Sue.

Grant had some good periods at Souths and make some dirty metres.

139 NRL games which we need the experience after losing Galloaway.

Sign him up now.

I Think you will still need a minimum of four front rowers in the 17\. In previous years some teams even had four props on the bench.
With the reduced interchange , most teams will probably have two props, one utility (2rower that can cover another position as well) and an impact player. Last year the Sharks used Barba off he bench and so many times he would come on late and turn the game their way.
I'd say we will probably have Ava and Another prop on the bench, with someone like Halatau as Utility then Cherrington as impact.

definitely at least 4.

4-5 will be the optimum amount i suspect in 2016 dropping from 5-6 previously.

we have woods, sue, ava and buchanan. quite light, but if rod griffin, McConnachie and tim grant (assuming he signs) kick on a bit they could provide some solid depth and grit to our pack

Josh Massoud is reporting that we are in talks with Tim Grant for next year.
I have heard this before but with the wabbits signing a few big names may have to get rid of him.

We could really use another big bopper up front.

Hope he Signs.

Cheers

If this Tim Grant thing is true should we be trying to bargain with them? Try and force them into offloading someone else as well? Like the Sharks did to us with Gibbs/Fifita.

Tim Grant would be a great signing. Big and experienced. Be nice to have a few big bodies on board to allow our smaller guys like Brooks and Moses to do their thing

Our management have to be very careful here. A few things:

- If Souths let him go that would be 2 years in a row that his current club has released him while under contract for a further few years. Unlucky, or simply not performing to the required level?

- Would he be cheap? Doubtful, but the longer discussions go the better for us. If it's short and sweet we cop his agent's demands and do whatever we have to to sign him. If we stand up for the price and duration we think is fair and don't get bullied by his agent or Souths (at the risk of him signing elsewhere) i'm happy with that regardless of the outcome.

In order to squeeze more players at the club, Souths need other clubs to pay the majority of the players' contracts they are releasing. If he's on the reported $450k he's on way overs on current form. I'd be happy if we offered him a max of $200k. Souths can pay the rest. If we pay him $300k for the first season or two and $450k for the 3rd year he could just be another worse version of Blair. Think, is he worth 2 Ava's? How much is an average bench prop worth?

- Is anyone else even after him? If not, why not? The Titans are usually linked to everyone imaginable yet there's not been a peep about any other club even sniffing around him. Of course there might be interest behind closed doors, but if there's not much it would strengthen our bargaining position considerably.

- For a guy who's been under-performing for a few years now, a 3 year contract could be suicide. 2 years max. He needs to prove he's better than what we have.

- Just because he's experienced (a bit old) doesn't mean that he;'s good. As others have said look at O'Hara, he was a former Origin player we signed and he was one of the worst players to ever play for our club. Why does he keep getting released? Are his knees about to die for example?

In the end he could be a decent addition but only for the right price and duration.

Pretty much agree on all fronts BB.

Sabre, I don't think the Bunnies are going to bargain with the likes of us, I'm afraid. They're shrewd operators.
There would be other clubs too, that are interested in his services, not just us i would assume.

I can answer the first bit.

Penrith releasing was purely due to money. He was overpaid, he had an upgrade built into his contract for rep footy that made him expensive. Once they decided to release him they felt that building Lattimore's experience was more valuable then the gap in ability between the 2, they were also under the impression they wouldnt win the comp (despite almost doing so)

The reason that Souths play Tyrell ahead of Grant is a balance issue. They feel that although individually the Burgess twins and Grant are mobile enough, that all of them are slightly less mobile than desirable and are reluctant to play all 3.

Grant is considered a very good influence around a club and is renowned as an excellent trainer.

I dont think we will be paying a huge salary for him and he could be a bargain.

He had his souths contract propped up by the penrith this year, so it is possible that both penrith and souths are kicking in for next year, and he has 3 years left on his current souths deal, so souths will be kicking in for a while.
