Russell Crowe Rumoured To Be Pulling The Pin

I like his excuse for pulling the pin….makes out that Souths were partly to blame for his failed marriage...lol...he simply doesn't want to continue to throw his money at them and used his marriage breakdown as an excuse to pull the pin

Jeez your a hard marker. He's given Souths credibility by throwing money and resources at what was really a very broken brand. He's separated, has two young kids and probs spends most of his waking hours talking to family lawyers. There'd be the not insignificant question of living arrangements for his boys and I suspect, as a decent father, he wants to focus on that and the settlement. He doesn't owe Souffs or their supporters anything

No dispute in what you are saying there CT… I just don't understand why he doesn't just come out and saying he's had enough of tipping $$ into Souths and leave it at that.... To link the reason to his family issues I just can't see the connection... It's not as if Rusty spends much time on Souths

Just further highlights to me how our merger got the ownership structure 100% correct.

Two football clubs and 2 Leagues clubs have equity with a third leagues club providing funding. The ownership is directly connected to the local communities and we as fans have so many avenues to may a financial contribution to our club. The diversification of ownership across organisations with a direct linkage to the community removes the risk Souths now face.

It seemed more in the larger context of how he spends his time. Given how much time his main career (which we assume to be acting notwithstanding the global power of TOFOG) anything else he does is eating into limited time to do other things. No doubt the failure of his marriage is a chance for him to take stock of his life and his commitment to various things. He seems to be a man who takes his marriage very seriously and being a father too. He possibly thinks the situation is a wakeup call for him.

Also we see his Souths stuff when he's on TV but there may be a lot of behind the scenes stuff that takes up his time. He owns 37.5% and given the other major owner seems to do stuff-all its up to him.

Like clockwork, here's Piggins' take/whinge on the events:

**George Piggins fears the South Sydney Rabbitohs will move to Perth**

GEORGE Piggins still recalls the night Kerry Packer looked him in the eye at a Double Bay cafe and told him anyone who thought there was money in football clubs or racehorses was mad.

Piggins agreed, so when Hollywood star Russell Crowe was trying to roll out the red carpet to buy Souths 10 years later, he relayed the late media mogul's advice.

Sitting in Crowe's $20 million waterfront Woolloomooloo apartment back in late 2005, Piggins delivered the same frank assessment to the multi-millionaire actor.

The trouble was, Crowe didn't want to listen. Piggins now fears the club he marched 80,000 people from Redfern Oval to the Town Hall steps in Sydney to save during the Super League war could be sold off to the Central Coast, or worse, Perth.

"We had a meeting, me and Russell, at his place," Piggins said. "Unfortunately he thought it was going to be so easy to make money out of a football club and he listened to people who didn't know.

"I told him I remembered the night Kerry told me: 'There's no money in football. Anyone owning a football team or racehorse is mad.' If there were a few more Kerry Packers around it would be better. Kerry was interested in sport and he put his money where his mouth was.

"Russell thought there was money in football and sport but I'm yet to see anyone make a lot of money out of football, other than the modern-day players."

Piggins cited the Penrith Panthers, where general manager Phil Gould has asked the club's four biggest stars to waive a clause giving them a pay rise when the salary cap increases, as an example of how tough clubs are doing it.

"Look at Penrith - they're asking people to take pay cuts. It tells you it's a hard business and you're not in it to make money," he said.

The South Sydney patriarch, who always feared the day would come when Crowe tired of putting his hand in his pocket to prop up Souths, said the actor had only half finished the job at Redfern.

"(Crowe) more or less said he had a job to do and I feel like that job's still not finished," Piggins said.

"South Sydney showed vast improvement this year under Michael Maguire and looked to be on the right track.

"But now with all of this speculation around it's just going to create instability. They've got players there on million-dollar contracts and they're going to be wondering whether they're going to get paid or not.

"It's going to be a little bit unsettled there for a while until we really find out what (Crowe) is doing.

"No matter what happens now, if Russell doesn't hold on to the club, I think it's destined to move somewhere else.

"I hope it comes back to Moore Park, but my fear is it will end up in Perth or on the Central Coast."

According to Piggins, Crowe owes the South Sydney faithful an explanation about how the sale of the club will work.

"The fans should get a say. I remember asking him five or six years ago what was going to happen when he didn't want the club any more and he said, 'That's my business.'"

History tends to repeat itself. John Singleton tried to prop up the Newtown RL club in the early 1980's. The club made the grand final in 1981 but soon after Singleton withdrew his financial support and the club was out of 1st grade by 1984\. Without sound financial backing glories in modern rugby league are short lived.

Yeah,Singo lost interest in the Jets overnite so there is a story there,he also won't get financially involved with a Central Coast bid so he's drawn a line in the sand with NRL clubs you would think. If Crowe was fair dinkum he would leave his money in but it will probaly counts towards any Divorce settlement and he's possibly better off getting half of it back than having the lot tied up with Souths.Anyway ,a lot of water to pass under the bridge between now and the end of 2013 so it could morph into anything but Souths will surely miss his money and the players his boot money.

On the contrary, I think handing over half of Souths would be a wonderful divorce present….

Ha…giving the lot would be better but unfortunately FPE Divorce settlements don't work like that.Interesting how he handles the fallout from advising a Journo. first without telling anyone from Souths and whether his mate stays involved.
