Ryan Matterson takes aim at NRL over ‘hefty’ fine

The Parramatta Eels will be without Ryan Matterson to begin the upcoming NRL season, after the backrower's three-match ban for a crusher tackle was upheld after an appeal to the chairman of the judiciary. Matterson copped the suspension after turning down a $4000 fine a crusher tackle executed during the 2022 grand final.

The Eels and State of Origin star had originally accepted a three-week sanction after declaring the fine he could have otherwise accepted as being too 'hefty'. The 28-year-old had a change of heart in November though, with the club subsequently exploring their options to get him back on the field without missing any time.

I doubt Freddy will pick him for origin he hates this kind of thing in Freddy's eye's the team is always first

I still think he is a outstanding footballer , but how do u front up to ur team mates and tell them u think more of $4,000 dollars rather than the team , I would be loaf to play with a player who done that , I could maybe forgive him if it was a 1 match ban but leaving ur mates and club in the shit for 3 games is disgraceful

Without doubt one of the worst things any player could do to a club and his team mates, the only thing that is worse imo is tanking on your club and team mates. There seems to be a pattern of poor player attitude at pawwa

It's weird because he has some strong spiritual beliefs. I guess in the end, their in it for a short time compared to the rest of the workforce and they need to get as much income for their family.
Still doesn't sit right though.
