Ryan Papenhuyzen

Already a better fullback than Mbye.

But just how good is Chee Kam? He shows a lot of aggression when he knows the other person won't hit back.

Does anyone know if his family is still in Balmain? If so, and he continues to perform, we can easily make a play for him in a year or two after he's been trained by Billy. Move either Reynolds or Mybe on. Maybe we'll have our sparkling new COE ready by then.

This guy is going to terrorise us, his agility and speed is something we don't handle.
Jerome Hughes won't see the no1 Storm jersey again.

Another one that got off the hook, its not that we let them go it's just other clubs are more attractive so this is going to continue to happen until we become successful.

Yes you are right there, what a rare talent is Ryan Papenhuyzen, hopefully we will try and retain some of our up and coming talent from now on. :+1:

@Cultured_Bogan well it's quiet possible there was nothing we could do but who knows?

We do have a bit of history of letting good junior players slip but if you look at Penrith, Parra and most clubs that actually develop juniors they all miss a good one here and there.

He was stuck behind a generational talent. I'm sure if he or the club knew that Tedesco was going to walk out he would have stayed.

This is the most likely scenario. I'd seen him play a bit of 20's and to me he was never going to get a run ahead of Teddy, and he would have known that. Going to the Storm was more of a known quantity with Slater at the backend of his career, by the time Bill retired he'd be there or thereabouts with making his debut subject to injury.

@WeHaveCheeKam Nonsense. Stop pumping people's tyres after 7 matches. He's got a lot more work to do to show he can physically compete season after season.

>****And frankly the modern game is less kind to small/quick than the older styles were****.

Yes. It is early but Ryan will be around for a while. He has excelled in all the lower grades in a similar vein to Moses; Teddy et al. And the modern game is definitely suited to smaller players. You know the interchange is getting decreased right? You do know what that means right? larger players? Bigger bodies? i think not.

Oh well Mitchell Moses as an example, I'm sold. You know who else excelled in lower grades? Bloody everyone who plays first grade, that's the point. If he's been around so long, why has he only played 7 FG games?

It's also fine to excel in lower grades when you are a little fellow who doesn't have to take on NRL-quality defensive sides weekly.

I'm not saying Paps won't become a regular FG player but it's a big IF and a bold prediction. I'd rather back stronger horses.

Personally I think Paps plays a lot like Dufty, who had a standout first season and hasn't been able to maintain that level. I also think that Paps has a really ungainly way of running, though he is quick, I have a suspicion he may lose pace as he ages because his natural technique isn't great. Also if he cops a leg injury as a small bloke, then what happens to his speed?

Lastly no, NRL have made no definitive call on dropping the interchange. They are obviously thinking about it, but they've also made it clear that they need to consider the wider implications if they make that change - there was an article just this week (Roy Master I think) about the concern of blowouts if they drop the interchange, because yes it favours little guys but it also favours routs if one team gets on top and the last thing the NRL wants is blow-outs.

Already in 2019 refs are being more lenient in the ruck (except for last night), which is resulting in less stoppages, faster games and increasingly tired players. Perhaps the current reffing style removes the need to consider dropping interchange.

But, by all means, buy up all the dwarves in the comp in anticipation of the return of "the little man". Clive Churchill would be so pleased.

'Dwarves' as you call them are what is going to keep people interested in the NRL. The NRL needs to seriously be more dynamic to keep up with AFL etc. Yes, the bigger players will 'blow' harder but not the fit/ versatile players (generally smaller players).

I'll come back to this thread when Papenhuyzen is a regular first grader and hit you up brother. He isn't going anywhere. I remember watching him play in the Aussie schoolboys a few years ago and to an extent some excel in the lower grades but then you see ones that a cut above. He is in that category.

You may perhaps be salty at the way Moses departed and it certainly wasn't good there is no denying his ability. He has always been dynamic in the sense he tried anything and everything on the park and often it came off. He covered wing; fullback; five eigth and half at Holy X/ Under 20s and ISP.

But like i said over and over again the NRL needs a sort of draft system otherwise the tigers can't compete with the richer clubs...we could have someone like Zion williams and still inevitably lose him to the storm or chooks, which is why i've lost so much interest in this code over the pat few years...

Ha! Bold prediction and I respect your conviction, let's indeed revisit this if we ever remember to.

Also I might have pushed my own sarcasm meter a little too much in the previous post, so I apologise if it was overboard.

Surely you have to factor in how better a player he is now having spent a few years under Bellamy and learning off of Billy Slater. Would be a mad one eyed Tigers fan to think we would have him looking as good under our system.

Bellamy put Hughes straight back into fullback ..Papenhuyzen back to the bench..

@Geo Well gee, he must really be a dud. The reality might start to slap some of our supporters in face when he becomes the next Storm fullback. Hughes is a fill in, one of those players who transitions between QLD Cup and NRL. We have lost another excellent player following on from Korobeite and JAC.

huh....don't think anyone said he's a dud......I think Hughes will end up in the halves..Papnhuyzen will get the FB spot..we should Target Drinkwater..who was tipped to be the FB before season ending injury.

I agree 4 into 3 doesnt fit and some of these young blokes have waited a long time behind Slater and Cronk

I say we need to make a play for this guy. This year, he is one of the contenders for Rookie of the year, and he doesn't even have a starting spot! A big loss for the Tigers, we could use someone like Papen to bolster our backline or bench...or even a starting lock

@TIGER
When he first came on the scene he was dynamic but sides can read him know and his not as effective a bit like Dufty at the Dragons

To be fair signing someone who peaked in round 10 this year would be better than what most often gets advocated on this forum ie signing someone who peaked in round 10 2014.

My gut feeling is that I agree with you - ultimately Paps lacks the size to be a regular fullback threat in the NRL. Against Tigers, he had that one tackle bust which he scored off, but for the rest of the match he was pretty well collared once the defence was able to pick him out. Matulino clobbered him a few times.

Paps tries hard and throws his body into it, but the Dufty comparison is telling for me, because every club would have loved to have Dufty in his first season, now he's basically unwanted.

Now Jahrome Hughes on the other hand, he's a real footballing talent IMO. Covers fullback well but becomes a third half when he joins the attack. Much more solid in contact and much better passing game. Paps has neither a passing game nor a kicking game.
