Sacking of Players

I think there is a problem in the NRL in regards to clubs sacking players for disciplinary reasons. It seems as though clubs are doing the right thing by the NRL by taking action against players who bring the game into disrepute but it seems they are disadvantaged by doing so. We sack Robert Lui, for being charged with assault. Not for being guilty, it isn't the clubs or the NRLs job to determine guilt, just for the initial charge. So we take the action of sacking Lui. The Cowboys pick him up, he plays for them in 2012 and nothing is resolved. I think the NRL should meet the clubs half way and deregister players sacked by clubs for disciplinary reasons for 6-12 months. How is it fair that a player can be sacked by one club and then play for another a few weeks/months later?
Just wondering how other people feel about sacked players playing for other clubs?

It sucks but players have to be given the chance to change their wrong doing ways
I'm not trying to make excuses for any footballer who has made numerable mistakes but they might change in a different setting or environment if given the chance and the proper guidance
If Lui does sign elsewhere (IE in Qld in particular) having family around him may help

Its all good and well for the player, but what about the club who has paid his wages, trained him up, given him the opportunity to be the footballer that he is today. I'm all for giving blokes a second chance, but what benefit does the club gain by "doing the right thing by the NRL?

Fair call Happy, I just think theres a better way to handle it and the threat of deregistration might provide incentive to avoid landing yourself in strife.

What's wrong with the NRL putting together a deterrent rather than accommodating rehabilitation? If a player knows that if he gets sacked from a club and faces an automatic 5 year ban from being re-registered, don't you think the player would think twice? You'll get several players who will offend and rehability but then you get the minority who are serial offenders that deserve to be sacked. If a player continually offends knowing he has 5 years hanging over his head if sacked by a club then he deserves to be banished.

He will be released I think you will find that way they can still go ahead with the Moltzen deal if it comes to fruition

If a player is charged and sacked, the NRL can't legally de-register them. If they are found guilty of their charges, then the NRL would have a leg to stand on. Until they are found guilty, they are deemed innocent and have every right to be treated as though they are. If clubs want to jump the gun and sack the players prematurely, they can expect them to pop up elsewhere if they are not found guilty in a court of law. I'm no lawyer, but if we were to sack Lui, and he was later found to be not guilty of his charges, then the NRL wouldn't have a leg to stand on if they tried to de-register him.

Why should they get compo if the CHOOSE to sack a player? Once he is sacked, he has no obligation to his club, as he is no longer apart of it. If you get sacked from your job for whatever reason, you can go and get a new job without your old employer having anything to do with it. The one thing I've learnt from these incidents is "the right thing" is to hold onto the player until the proceedings are complete.

I agree. The NRL is a business not a sport. It's primary product is a sport.

There should be no rehabilitation for illegal community acts. In the real world you most definetly get punted and depending upon the charge become a pariah in your sector. For a player to be sacked he has done something horribly wrong. This should also involve some sort of deregistration as the club has had the balls to do the right thing. Obviously it all relates to what happened and how the sacking came about but rehab DOES NOT work.

If Lui is found guilty and sacked, he should not be allowed to play for anyone else next year. I have been saying the same thing for years re Todd Carney.

For the club that experience the first infringement, it is hardest on them because they probably spent the most money on bringing the player through, as has already been said. But generally these clubs give the player an opportunity to rehabilitate - e.g. Lui, Carney at Raiders, Seymour at Brisbane, Bird at Sharks etc.

The sacking comes about generally because of repeat infringements - it is proven publicly that the rehab and culture at that given club is not compatible with good behaviour, even if the club did everything they can. Clubs also have to keep in mind how sponsors feel about the behaviour of their players, probably a prime driver of sackings.

The new club is taking a big risk by signing a wayward player - not only for their own sponsors, but the greater potential for recidivism. So whilst it is not really fair on the first club that the player can just re-sign elsewhere, the second club is taking a much bigger risk.

As we've seen with Carney or Arana Taumata, taking on a troubled player can often be more pain than gain.

The whole issue of de-registering players is a very complicated one. Very rarely is there a black and white case warranting instant deregistration. What if a player has severe emotional issues stemming from a horrific childhood and can't escape a cycle of violence? Likewise, a player unable to deal with something from his past becomes an alcoholic and gets arrested for urinating in public a few times? Do these guys deserve to be thrown on the scrap heap or does the game that has benefitted from their efforts have a duty of care to help them? I would like to see an independent body review each case on it's merits and if feasible, design and implement strategies, followed-up independently in an effort to make these guys better people.

As for clubs sacking players for indiscretions- if Carney had led the Roosters to the GF in 2011 and won the Dally M whilst breaking a promise to not drink, would he have been moved on?

Would those who want Lui sacked by WT if convicted think the same way if It was Benji or Robbie Farah?

It really isn't much different from releasing a player your not happy with formwise
He goes to another club fires up and plays good footy
It is all a matter of getting the best from your players both on and off the field
